âAnd so when Johnny and Jerry asked to change roomsâŠâ said Odelia.
âThey refused, as they didnât know how far the range of that smartwatch extendedâpresumably not very farâand they needed to stay as close as possible to pull this off.â
âSo what went wrong?â asked Tex.
âI think the watch, being the first of its kind, didnât work as planned. I think it gave Hilbourne some kind of shock to the brainâan aneurysm.â
âA brain bleed,â said Tex, nodding.
âBut if his brain was bleeding, why was there blood on the carpet?â asked Marge.
âHis brain was leaking!â Dooley cried.
âItâs possible,â Tex conceded. âIt depends where in the brain the hematoma occurred. The fact that he bled through the nose probably saved his life, as pooling of blood inside the cranium puts pressure on the brain and could have killed him before he got to the hospital.â
âSo instead of looking into his brain and stealing his passwords,â said Gran, âthey almost killed him.â
âThey must have panicked,â said Marge.
âAnd Johnny and Jerry chose that exact moment to force their way into the room,â said Gran, âand thought the cousins were roughing up Hilbourne and decided to intervene.â
âThe cousins must have realized something was terribly wrong when they heard Lord Hilbourne cry out in pain,â I said, âor maybe they saw what was happening on their laptop, so they hurried into Hilbourneâs suite, wanting to help Hilbourne, and help themselves by swapping the watches againâmaking the evidence disappear. But Johnny and Jerry dropping by ruined their plan.â I shrugged. âAnd the rest I think you know.â
âWhen Mr. Ed first approached you,â said Harriet, âhe said he heard Bob say âIf I can just convince her Iâm home free.â It made Mr. Ed suspicious. What was that all about?â
âI think at first Bob was planning to outfit Evelina with the smartwatch, as planned. But he had to convince her to wear the watch all the time, so they could gather enough data. Later on he changed his mind and told his cousins he couldnât go through with it.â
âI have a question, too,â said Tex. âWhen Emma Bezel asked me to date her sister, she didnât tell me that Bob was dead. She told me heâd broken Evelinaâs heart by not showing up for a date. Was she lying to me or didnât she know that Bob was dead at that point?â
âOf course she was lying,â said Gran with a shake of the head. âMuch easier to convince you that way. Imagine if she told you that her sisterâs boyfriend had been found dead in the back of a potato truck. Would you have been as eager to have lunch with her?â
âUmâŠâ said Tex, giving this a think.
âOn second thought, better donât answer that,â said Gran.
Odelia got up and pressed a kiss to my furry brow. âYou did well, Max. Iâm proud of you.â
âWeâll have to confirm Maxâs theory,â said Uncle Alec, âbut it all sounds very plausible to me. So plausible in fact that I think I might recruit him as my newest detective, Odelia.â
Odelia smiled and said, âNo way. Heâs my assistant.â
âFair enough,â said the Chief with a grin. He got up to leave, but Odelia said, âNot so fast, Uncle Alec. I also have an announcement to make.â
âWe have an announcement to make,â said Chase.
âChase and I have given this a lot of thought,â said Odelia.
âAnd weâve decidedâŠâ Chase continued.
â⊠that the wedding is off,â Odelia finished.
âWhat?!â Gran cried.
âBut honey!â said Marge.
âI knew it,â Tex said, shaking his head. âI just knew it.â
âWell, that saves me the cost of having to rent a tux,â Uncle Alec muttered.
âWhat we mean to say is,â said Chase, âthat the wedding as we originally envisioned it is off.â
âItâs become too unwieldy and too big for us,â Odelia explained.
âInstead Iâve got six plane tickets here,â said Chase. âOne for each of you and also for Charlene and Scarlett.â
âTickets? Tickets to where?â asked Gran.
âVegas. If you agree, we would like to fly you out there next Saturday.â
âAnd you,â said Odelia, gesturing to myself and my three friends and housemates.
âWeâre going for a Vegas wedding,â said Odelia finally, a big smile on her face.
âJust you guys,â said Chase, âand no one else.â
âHow about it?â asked Odelia, and both she and Chase looked a little trepidatious all of a sudden, unsure of how their family would react.
âI love it,â said Uncle Alec.
âAbsolutely!â said Marge, and streaked forward to hug her daughter.
âDoes that mean we have to write to all those people to disinvite them?â asked Gran.
âI think a message in the Gazette will suffice,â said Odelia.
âThen count me in,â said Gran.
âAnd me!â said Tex.
âChaseâs granddad is also coming,â Odelia said, âand his mom and aunt. And thatâs it. Weâre going for the ultra-limited approach.â
âSometimes thatâs the best one,â Marge agreed.
And frankly I couldnât have agreed more.
âVegas,â said Dooley, wide-eyed. âDo they have cats there, Max?â
âSure,â I said. âItâs just a town like any other, Dooley.â
âWell, maybe not like any other,â said Brutus with a grin.
âBut theyâve got kibble, right?â
âOf course they have kibble,â I said.
And hopefully it was the non-pre-chewed kind.
Chapter 38
The wedding had gone off without a hitch. The same couldnât be said for the post-wedding dinner, which Tex had taken upon himself to preside over. Unfortunately heâd opted for one of those sushi places where the customer is supposed to do everything themselves. But even as Tex grabbed the knife and tongs handed to him by an overoptimistic server, and started slicing and dicing morsels of food then aiming them at his clientsâ plates, those clientsâor victimsâwere still basking in that post-wedding bliss too much to bother about what landed onâor in the vicinity ofâtheir plates.
Chaseâs grandfather, mom and aunt had left by then to get an early nightâthey must have had a premonition, for at some point I heard Gran loud-whisper into Scarlettâs ear that they could always move to a
