âThat made things worse. I kept thinking maybe youâd got lost in some old dark tunnels!â said Mum.
âWellâŠâ said Cecilia.
âYou didnât,â said Hester, finishing her sentence.
âNo, because here you are!â said her dad, giving her a big squeeze.
âAnd thereâs still some of your birthday leftâalthough it is quite late.â
âCan we go home, just get a pizza or something?â said Cecilia.
âPIZZA! Yes! Iâm hungry!â Hester chirped.
âAre you OK, darling? I mean, really?â asked her mum, kissing her on the cheeks and looking deep into her eyes the way only a mum can.
âI am absolutely fine. Just a bit tired and hungry.â
âOK. Well, your dad and I will have a chat with the manager and the police. You guys sit on that bench over there while we sort this out and then we will get something to eat, OK?â
âGreat,â said Cecilia.
Hester and Cecilia sat side by side on a wooden bench while their parents talked to the authorities. Her Mum and Dad kept looking over and smiling.
âWhere did you get that rucksack?â asked Hester.
âOh, I⊠was wearing it earlier. Didnât you notice?â
âNo, you werenât. I remember. And what are you wearing under your coat?â she said, smoothing her hand over the fuzzy texture of the deepsuit. âAwww, itâs all velvety!â Hester smiled.
âYeah⊠Charity shop,â Cecilia fibbed.
âBut you were wearing jeans earlier,â said Hester.
âWell, you canât always believe everything you see, can you, kiddo?â
âKiddo?â she said, scrunching up her nose.
âRight then, kids. Pizza it is!â said her dad, rubbing his hands together. Hester immediately dropped the conversation and jumped to her feet.
âTurns out they took your train for a spring clean or something, thatâs why it took so much longer to turn round. The person who was sprucing up the insides swears you werenât in there though.â
Cecilia and her dad dropped back as Hester skipped ahead holding their mumâs hand.
âMustâve been quite a scary adventure?â asked her dad.
âYeah, it was pretty lonely and boring, but all that matters is that Iâm back with you guys now,â shrugged Cecilia as she found the whistle in her pocket and held it tight in her hand. She linked her dadâs arm with her free arm.
âWere you in the pitch dark the whole time?â Her dad looked anxiously at Cecilia.
Cecilia turned to him and said with a serene smile dancing about her mouth, âYes, pretty much, but you know me, Dad. Iâm not afraid of a little bit of darkness.â
