Taking a deep breath, Casey leaned back against the bulkhead. Her eyes flitted to the calico ocelini as she appeared at the warthogâs threshold. âWhat, no gun?â
âExcuse me?â
Casey nodded toward her captor. âYouâre unarmed. How are you supposed to guard me if youâre unarmed?â
The ocelini regarded Casey skeptically. âMy shotgunâs just outside, and youâre in cuffs. I donât think I need to worry about that.â
âWhatâs your name?â
âMisaki, but most everyone calls me Saki.â Her ears swiveled forward as she smiled. âYouâre Cassiopeia, right?â
âMy friends call me Casey. You havenât been doing this long, have you?â
Misaki regarded her warily. âDoing what?â
âThe whole⊠piracy thing,â said Casey.
âAlmost a year,â said Misaki. âI donât get a very big share yet, but Blacktusk takes care of us. No one goes hungry.â
âHow do you live with yourself?â asked Casey.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âAll the people you kill,â said Casey. âHow do you sleep at night?â
Crossing her arms, Misaki laughed wryly and leaned against the bulkhead. âDonât believe everything you see on the news. Most of the âdeadâ are people Blacktuskâs recruited from other crews. We use the heads-on-pikes thing as a scare tactic and to make sure the body count matches up, but theyâre just props. I set up the ones on the Champion, myself.â
âYou canât fake DNA records,â said Casey.
Misaki squinted playfully. âWeâre not the ones faking them. Maybe you should do some digging when you get back in the saddle. I bet thereâs a mystery to solve.â
âWhat about the people you actually kill?â asked Casey. âThe ones you donât fake. Like the mphuno you left on the boarding ramp.â
âSometimes people try to be heroes, and accidents happen.â Misaki shrugged. âWhat do you care, anyway? You tried to ambush usânot that should I expect anything less from the IPF. Barbarians with badges, thatâs what you lot are. If it werenât for Orin, weâd all be dead.â
Casey shook her head. âIf it werenât for Orin, none of us would even be here.â
âThatâs true,â said Misaki, and she chuckled.
âWhy did Blacktusk separate me from the others?â
âThatâs how he always starts it. He separates the captains from the rest because captains never join, and they sometimes inspire their crew to hold the line. Donât worry. When itâs time for chow, heâll ask your friends to join our crew.â Misaki smiled. âNo offense, but theyâll probably say yes.â
âNone taken. What happens to me?â asked Casey.
âHeâll ransom you back to the IPF. They always pay, so youâve got nothing to worry about there either.â Misaki leaned in with a wink and sang, âUnless you wanted to joi-oin.â
âMaybe next time.â Casey took a deep breath and slowly released it. âThank you, Misaki. You seem decent enough. I apologize for whatâs about to happen.â She scooted up slightly and started hitting the back of her head against the bulkhead.
âDonât do that,â said Misaki. She pulled Casey away.
Casey scooted right back and resumed hitting her head.
âCome on,â said Misaki, and she pulled Casey halfway across the warthogâs deck. âBlacktusk doesnât want you hurt!â
âI wonder how long you can keep this up,â said Casey, and she scooted right back.
âWhy are you doing this?â asked Misaki.
âBecause a guard should always establish authority over their prisoners, and the best way to do that is with a proper sidearm,â said Casey.
âSo, if I get my gun, youâll stop hurting yourself?â
Casey smiled. âYes.â
âThank you,â said Misaki. She walked to the edge of the compartment and grabbed her shotgun. Daisies and bunnies decorated its forestock. âYou got some screws loose, lady.â
Casey laughed as she scooted over to Misaki. âOh, you have no idea.â
Misaki startled as she turned back around and discovered Casey seated at her feet. âWhat are you doing?â
âSomething I hate,â said Casey. She stared at the barrel of the gun. With a look of dreadful determination, she fell on her back, kicked up her feet and hooked them against the butt of the shotgun. She yanked the weapon forward, forcing Misaki to pull the trigger.
Misakiâs ears rang. She stared aghast at the gaping hole in Caseyâs lifeless body. âOh my god,â she whispered. Terrified, she turned around and glanced at her swiftly approaching associates. âBlacktuskâs going to kill me.â She shook as she placed her shotgun in Caseyâs hand and pushed several crates into place, blocking direct view of the scene from below. She lowered herself onto the hangar deck.
âEverything okay?â asked the sudasau female. âI thought I heard gunfire!â
Misaki grinned nervously. âOh, hi Shulana! Ostonk. Mayfield. Whatâs up, Laz. Nope, no gunfire. Itâs just that the prisonerâs fast asleep now, and it occurred to me how much I could use a smoke break. I knocked over a couple crates on the way out, is all.â
âIt didnât sound like crates. It sounded like a gun going off,â said Shulana.
Misaki turned around and knocked over one of the containers. It struck the shuttleâs deck with a loud thud. Facing Shulana again, she raised her hands. âSee?â
âI remain unconvinced,â said Shulana. âHowever, a smoke break sounds smashing. You guys want to break into the BICOM shuttle with me?â She pulled a box of Black Ties from her sleeveâs cuff and tapped out a cigarette. She placed it between her lips and looked expectantly at her partner. âOstonk!â
âWhat?â asked the sudasau male.
âYouâre the man with the fire,â said Shulana.
âOh yeah,â said Ostonk. A moment later, he produced a trench lighter and lit Shulanaâs cigarette.
âSounds like fun,â said Misaki.
As she lit up her own cigarette and led her associates away, a flash of prismatic light filled the warthogâs confines. Every bit of Caseyâs remainsâeven the blood spattered on Misakiâs clothingâvanished. Casey reappeared an instant later, several paces off from where she fell, completely restored and completely naked. Taking a moment to get her bearings, she gathered all her gear and clothing. She quickly dressed, collected her restraints, and picked up Misakiâs shotgun. Keeping to the shadows, she slipped out of the warthog and made her way toward Kyâs shuttle.
