âNo. Why would she be?â
âBecause I invited her,â she said in a duh voice. âWhich I shouldnât have had to do. You shouldâve invited her.â
âYou really like to stick your nose into everyoneâs business, donât you?â he said, but his voice didnât sound too angry.
âYes, I do.â
âWell, get ready to be disappointed. Because she wonât be here.â
âYou want to make a friendly wager?â she asked.
I relinked hands with him and squeezed.
âOh really?â Mari said, pointing between the two of us. âNobody ever listens to my advice.â
âI do,â Clay said.
âOh please,â Tia said. âYou donât listen to anybody.â
Brooks narrowed his eyes at Maricela. âWhat advice have you been giving?â
âI said youâre a hot mess.â
âWell, thatâs true,â he responded.
âThatâs not true,â I said. âLife is messy. Itâs better when we try to get through it together.â
âOkay, Socrates,â Clay said.
Tia elbowed him. âDonât be dumb. She was making a good point. Weâre all in this together.â
âAw!â Maricela said, and smooshed us into a group hug.
I felt different this time as we stood off to the side of the stage, waiting to go on. The screams of hundreds of people were drowning everything out, but also vibrating through me, like the energy was holding me up, urging me on. Levi and Ian were on my left and Brooks was on my right, but Kai was still MIA.
The band onstage finished their song. âShould we borrow their drummer?â I asked as a joke, but Brooks seemed to seriously consider it.
âNo,â he said after a moment. âWeâll be fine.â
âPlease welcome to the stage Two Thousand Bear Heads!â
More cheering pulsed through the air. I jumped up and down a few times to try and channel my energy, then said, âLetâs do this.â I walked with purpose up the stairs and to the microphone. I grabbed hold of it with both hands. âHello, Roseville!â
I smiled as the volume of the crowd rose again. âOur first song for you tonight is called âRewriting History.âââ
A drumroll rang out and I turned to see Kai sitting on his stool.
âTold you he always comes back,â Levi said from my left.
Brooks swung his guitar around to his front and gave me a wink. âYou got this.â
And I did.
It wasnât as scary as I thought it would be to look out at the sea of faces, especially when I saw some familiar ones that had worked their way closer to the stageâLauren, Shay, and Maricela.
This time through the song was ten times better than the last. It wasnât because I was perfect, because I wasnât. But I had a whole band backing me up. Kai busted out a drum solo when I missed a cue and Ian chimed in when I forgot a lyric. And I finished out the second verse strong and beamed at the audience when they clapped.
Brooks stepped up beside me and leaned into the microphone. âIsnât she amazing? Avery Young, everyone!â
My smiled stretched even farther.
Brooks jerked his head to the side and the rest of the band filed off the stage while he switched his electric guitar for his acoustic. Then he was beside me at the microphone again. âOur second song tonight is calledâŠâ He stopped. âDid we ever name this song, Avery?â
âI donât think we did,â I said, sharing the mic with him and meeting his eyes. âIâve just been calling it the love songâŠbecauseâŠwell, because itâs about our journey this summer.â I stopped and felt my cheeks go red. âI mean, I think thatâs what itâs about. Is your verse about me?â
âOf course my verse is about you,â he said. âIs your verse about me?â
âYes.â
At least half the crowd let out a big âAwwww!â and my cheeks got even redder. I hadnât meant to share that discovery with an audience, but either way, my stomach was filled with flapping wings of happiness.
Brooks kissed my cheek to another wave of âAwww!â
âYou ready?â he asked.
âYes.â
The melody flowed through his fast-moving fingers as he picked the strings. This time I did look at him, not because I needed to but because I wanted to, and I sang.
âSometimes the stars align
Sometimes the path seems moved for you
Sometimes itâs just in time
Exactly when hope was almost through
And sometimes is all I need
And more than I deserved
So I read into every sign
Because sometimes, yes this time, sometimes brought me you
Sometimes the moon goes dark
And the path ahead unclear
Sometimes I miss my mark
And Iâm living in constant fear
But sometimes is all I need
To grow and try and learn
Because sometimes, yes this time, sometimes brought me youâ
Brooks played the last note and we held each otherâs gaze for another three beats. I could hear my blood flowing in my ears, muffling the noise of the applause.
âYouâre pretty cool,â Brooks whispered.
I leaned in and kissed him.
âYou are amazing!â Shay screamed when I found her, Lauren, and Maricela after our set. âWho even are you?â
I laughed.
âSheâs Avery Freakinâ Young,â Maricela said.
âNo, seriously,â Shay said. âYouâve only been gone for seven weeks, right?â
âIâm glad you came,â I said to Shay.
âMe too.â
Lauren hadnât said a word and I thought it was because she was recording, but then I noticed her phone wasnât out. âDid your battery die?â I asked.
She shook her head, her eyes shining.
âLauren,â I said. âAre you okay?â
She pulled me into a hug. âYou sounded so good.â
I had forgotten sheâd never heard me perform.
âIâm so proud of you.â
I hugged her back, closing my eyes. âYou didnât really think I could do it, did you?â
âNo!â she said, but then smiled. âYes, I did.â
âThank you.â
She squeezed me hard before we pulled apart. I looked around, my happiness from seconds ago wavering. âWhere are Mom and Dad? Are they mad about me and Brooks?â
âNo,â Lauren said. âThey were just here.â She looked around, then pulled out her phone.
As she brought up her text messages, I caught a glimpse of Dad across the way. âWe donât need it,â I said.
âNo?â
I pointed.
âWhoâs he talking to?â Shay asked.
