âHowâs the baby doing?â
Imelda narrowed her eyes. Her hand protectively going to her stomach. She seemed awkward. As if talking about her own baby would only upset Shelby further.
âThe police said that theyâd seen you go in for a check-up. I know that we are due the same time⊠I thought maybeâŠâ Shelby said, seeing the strained look on Imeldaâs face and worrying sheâd said something she shouldnât. That perhaps the baby wasnât okay.
âWhy would the police know that I was at the hospital? Why would they tell you that?â Imelda said, looking suddenly stricken then. Put out, as if her privacy had been invaded.
âThey went through all the security footage,â Shelby said. âThey were eliminating people from their enquiries.â
âIt was nothing. I had a few twinges thatâs all, and I havenât been feeling well. I just wanted to get checked out, but then I felt bad, you know. I thought I was probably just wasting the midwifeâs time. So, I leftâŠâ
Shelby frowned, eyeing Imelda suspiciously. Her friend was lying. Diverting her eyes and stuttering her words ever so slightly as she spoke. She narrowed her eyes then before saying what sheâd suspected all along.
âYou made it up, didnât you? You made up that you thought you were in labour.â
Imeldaâs cheeks flushed a hot red in answer to being caught out.
âYou donât have to lie, Imelda. I know what you did⊠I get it.â
Imelda scanned the balcony once more. As if she was checking that Shelby was truly alone. Convinced that she wouldnât be. Convinced that someone else was out there hiding too.
âHey, chill out. I wonât tell!â Shelby laughed then, seeing Imeldaâs look of alarm. âYou came to see how I was doing, didnât you? Only what? They wouldnât let you in?â Shelby rolled her eyes. âItâs a strict family only policy⊠which is a shame because I could have done with them not letting Ashley in. That manâŠâ Shelby spat, unable to hide the bitterness from her tone.
âAshley. Why? Is he okay? Are you two okay?â
âNot really, no. Itâs a long story,â Shelby said, shivering as the cold swept over her then. âI should have brought a coat, only I left in such a hurry,â she said, hinting for Imelda to invite her inside. Only Imelda didnât move and she didnât offer.
âI snuck out when Mum and Dad were distracted, having another one of their âanimated discussionsâ as they like to call them. To you and me, itâs a full-on row. My dad paid a ransom to get Riley back. Can you believe it? He didnât even tell me. God, theyâre doing my head in. I mean I know that they are suffering too. Riley is their grandchild butâŠâ
âLook, Iâm sorry, Shelby. Really, I am. For everything youâre going through, but I was just off to bed. And like I said, Iâm still not feeling great.â Imelda placed her hand over her mouth and feigned a cough. âI donât want to pass anything onâŠâ
Shelby nodded, realising that she was unwelcome here. âOh right. Well, I just thought Iâd check on you while I was here. Say hi!â Shelby thought that she wouldnât bother again. Imelda clearly wasnât the friend that Shelby thought she was.
âIâll see you around some time.â She turned to leave â and caught the sound of a tiny sneeze and a murmur.
âWhat was that?â Shelby laughed, thinking at first Imelda had made the strange noise as she feigned another coughing fit. Only she didnât manage to cover the sound up, and the look of horror that spread over the womanâs face made Shelby realise that maybe there was more to why Imelda wasnât inviting her in.
âOh! Youâve got company?â Shelby said, raising her eye and giving Imelda a curious smirk, thinking that maybe Imelda had patched things up with her ex. And that was why she was so eager to get rid of Shelby. Sheâd caught them both at a bad time.
âNo. Itâs the telly. Iâm watching One Born Every Minute. Though I shouldnât really. Itâs like a form of torture, isnât it? When Iâll have to go through it soon too âŠâ Imelda said, babbling now.
Which made Shelby suspect that the woman was still lying. And for some reason she really didnât want Shelby to know who she had in there.
âRight, well, Iâll see you around,â Imelda said quickly as they both heard the faint sound of a babyâs cry.
Not from the telly, Shelby realised. The noise was coming from the little room just off the hallway. The nursery?
Imelda closed the front door quickly then; only she wasnât quick enough. Shelby managed to wedge her foot in the gap between the frame and the door. Every instinct in her body screaming at her that something wasnât right. That the noise couldnât be what she thought. What she hoped.
âWhat was that?â Shelby said, glaring at the woman incredulously before shaking her head as the terrifying realisation dawned on her.
âNo. No! That canât beâŠâ Shelby said, pushing her way into the flat now and not taking no for an answer.
Imelda was hiding something. Or more importantly someone. Riley?

Pushing her way into the room, Shelbyâs eyes scanned the beautifully decorated nursery, her gaze going immediately to the cot, where the cooing noises were coming from.
âRiley?â she said in complete disbelief as she stared down at her beautiful baby son. Dressed in clothes that she didnât recognise. Wrapped in a blanket that wasnât his. But she knew those eyes. She knew that little face.
âRiley, darling!â she said again, a strange animalistic screech coming from her mouth, a mix of horror and relief, as she lunged for the cot, ready to scoop her son back up into her arms.
âNo!â Imelda shouted, her mouth twisted, her expression feral as she stepped in front of the cot, a knife flashing in her hand. The jagged silver blade was pointed directly at Shelby.
âThat is my
