âGood Lord, no!â he exclaimed quickly. âAt first, perhaps, half thatâ âhalf you! I feltâ âsomehowâ âthat Iâd got to look after you. And thenâ âand when you disappearedâ âbut I believe Iâm a bit muddleheaded! Iâll tell you somethingâ âall that time you were lost, Iâ âwell, I scarcely ever slept! Wondering, you know. And when you turned up yesterday afternoonâ âbut I want to ask you something that Iâm not quite clear aboutâ âI was certainly muddled just then!â
âWhat is it?â she asked.
Hetherwick bent down to her and dropped his voice.
âI was so glad, so relieved to see you, yesterday afternoon,â he said, âthatâ âthat I felt dazedâ âeh? And I want to knowâ âdid I kiss you?â
Rhona suddenly looked up at himâ âand laughed.
âOh, really, how amusing you are!â she said. âWhy, of course, you did! Twice!â
âThatâs good!â he exclaimed. âIâ âI thought perhaps Iâd dreamt it. Butâ âdid you kiss me?â
âDo you really want to be dead sure?â asked Rhona mischievously. âVery wellâ âI did!â
âThatâs better!â said Hetherwick.
