“That’s good. I miss home. Plus, Kitty has been blowing up my phone.”
Savage? I’d know that gruff voice anywhere. Why was he here?
“How are you handling everything with that?” Max asked.
“About as good as expected. I don’t like that my baby sister was raped and then kept the kid, but I get why she did. The kid is cute and innocent. It didn’t ask to be created that way, and it’s not at fault. I just thank God the kid looks like Kitty and not that bastard.”
Oh, God, Savage. I am so sorry. I wish I would wake up so I could tell him that. He needed to know that I cared about him and his sister. She was going to need so much help. I wanted to help.
“Has Kitty given you a description of the man who raped her?”
“She told Player. He has it. He’s been running facial recognition, trying to find the fucker.”
“What about Bullseye?”
“He thinks until Layla is found, Kitty is still in danger.”
“So, they are staying married?”
“Yeah,” Savage grumbled.
“What?”
“I don’t know. I just feel useless. I should have been there for my sister. I should have protected her better, ya know. Instead, I thought she’d be safe at school. You know she had to drop out because of the kid. She doesn’t know if she’s gonna go back. It’s just a shame. Kitty is smart, and she would have been a damn fine nurse.”
“She can go back. We will all help. Hell, I’ll even pay for it.”
“She knows. I told her that.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“She’s got it in her head that this fucker is going to come back and take the kid. I told her she was being silly, that nothing would get to her or that kid. But she doesn’t believe me.”
“Did you move her into your house on the property?”
“No, Bullseye has her at his house. Said it was more conducive for a family. That and it’s hardwired with all kinds of surveillance shit and a panic room. That man is crazy, Reaper. Not sure I want my sister around him.”
Max laughed. It was good to hear him laugh again. “Bullseye knows what he’s doing. Just let him help.”
“Yeah.”
I heard the door to the room open. I heard footsteps, and then Healer spoke, “Reaper, I’ve scheduled the med-flight. It arrives in two hours and will fly Remi to Purgatory Memorial Hospital, where I will continue her care. Brother, can we have the room.”
I heard a chair screech across the floor, someone whispered something, and then a loud smack. What the hell was that? Then I heard whistling as the door close.
“Reaper, Doctor Delamont, and I ran a few more tests on Remi to find out why she isn’t waking up. Neurologically she is fine. There are no brain bleeds, swelling, nothing. When that came back all clear, we started looking in other areas.”
“Just tell me, Healer,” Max said, holding my hand tighter.
“She’s pregnant.”
“Excuse me.”
What?
No.
I can’t be.
NO! NO! NO! I screamed in my head as the darkness quickly took me away.
TWENTY-SIX
REAPER
I’d been back at the compound for three days now, and Remi still hadn’t woken up. I refused to have her at our house, insisting it was too far away in case of an emergency. Instead, she was currently upstairs in my private room at the clubhouse, where she was protected twenty-four seven.
Healer kept assuring me that she needed time, and the longer she slept, the more her body had time to heal. He kept her feeding tube in, which I hated, but knowing she could not eat for herself, all I could do was nod and agree. My mother and sister had taken it upon themselves to come by every day to make sure Remi was washed, cleaned, and in fresh clothes every day, not trusting the nurse Healer hired to do just that.
Though I wanted her in my bed, Healer insisted she slept in a hospital bed, which was better for everyone else to make sure Remi got the care she needed. It killed me not to have her in my bed, but I did insist that her bed be put in my room. I didn’t want her to have many visitors in case she woke up. I didn’t want her overwhelmed. As it was, my room was a revolving door of people who would come by, sit, talk, and gab about everything and anything. There was no moment of peace for her, and I feared even though she was still sleeping, the constant barrage of intruders was overwhelming her.
As it was, Shamrock and Grimm were currently in my room with her along with my mother, who passionately believed that reading and keeping Remi up to date on celebrity news was essential.
I, however, wanted everyone to leave her the fuck alone.
She’d been through enough. Bombarding her wasn’t going to make her wake up any faster.
I was sitting at the bar downing another shot of Jack Daniels when Ghost sat down next to me. Instead of saying anything, he reached over the bar and grabbed his own bottle.
“Wanna talk about it?”
“No,” I said, taking another drink.
“Why don’t you go sit with her?”
“Mom has her occupied.”
“Ah, the daily scoop on who’s fucking who in Hollywood.”
“Yep.”
“Well, since you’re not busy, Player and Phantom have something they want to show us.”
Nodding, I downed another drink and got to my feet just as Remi’s little brother Jax came running into the common room. Both he and his sister, Sunny, had been at the compound for over a week now, and though they were unsure at first, they were acclimating to club life fast. It also helped that all the brothers doted on them, giving them whatever they wanted. “Whoa there slugger. Where’s the fire?”
“Sunny is mad.” Remi’s younger brother Jax said, skirting around me to hide behind my back just as Sunny came hobbling in on one of her crutches.
“You little
