âI have the right resources. A powerful person.â
I huffed. âAnd this person trusts you?â
There was the slightest pause before he answered. âWith almost everything. Why? Donât I look trustworthy, Goddess Thea?â
I spared a glance at his scruffy, hardened appearance, but it wasnât really his looks I was noticing. It was his eyes. With blue so dark and rich a girl should want to stare at them. But there was no light in his irises and getting lost in them must be like drowning in the nearly black depths of the seas Nik had described to me. In fact, my throat was closing as I sat next to him, hurtling down the mountain away from Nik.
âNo, you look like a bad guy.â I couldnât believe Iâd ever trusted him. He probably had no intentions of taking me to the island. Question was, was he committing me to a life on the run? Or worse?
âLooks can be deceiving. Besides, the bad guys usually have the best intel. The supposed good guys can be bought, and if not, they can be hacked, which is how my source got most of this information.â
âAnd you trust this source?â
A look flashed over his faceâchagrin? amusement? disbelief? âYeah. With almost everything,â he said, his tone heavy and pensive.
âItâs the âalmostâ part that scares me.â
Below his breath, he muttered, âYeah, that part scares me, too.â
It was the first one hundred percent honest thing Coop had said to me. And I wasnât sure I welcomed it. Tough, rugged, ripped Coop was scared of something? As much as Iâd wanted to break down his barriers, I didnât relish learning he had vulnerabilities. Especially given how my life was now entirely in his hands.
Realizing I had little to say in how this was all going to go down, I pushed out a calming breath. âSo, when are you going to share this grand plan of yours?â
âThought youâd never ask. Iâve arranged to meet with your fiancĂ© and hand you over to him.â

Nik had done everything he could think ofâpacked up clothes and supplies, readied the cabin for being gone for a couple of weeks, and finally made good use of the tracking device from Titanâs collar.
âMaybe you should sit down and try to relax,â Leo suggested. âThe two of you are going to wear a rut in your wood floors.â
Nik glanced back at the panting dog hot on his heels, nearly tripping him at every turn. Titan didnât like Thea being gone any more than Nik did. But for Nik it was not only being apart from Thea eating at his sanity, it was also the look in her eyes when sheâd left.
Heâd hurt her. Sheâd misunderstood when heâd broken away from her kiss. But the last time heâd said goodbye to someone he loved, theyâd died.
âHow close are they now?â
âAlmost to Boulder,â Leo responded from his position on the bar stool.
They still had awhile before theyâd get the go ahead from Coop. But at least they could head to the park to pick up Aimee soon. Thea would be pissed if she knew. She hated how involved in her problems he already was, but sheâd understand when it was all said and done and she no longer had anyone to run from.
God, waiting to hear from her was killing him. He needed to keep moving. If he stopped to sit down, he wouldnât be able to breathe. Sharking, the Team Guys called it. But as with sharks, SEALs didnât always survive captivity.
âYou always act like this on an op?â
Jerking his head, Nik caught Leoâs grin and grumbled. âNo.â
In fact, heâd never felt this restlessâŠuseless, except during leave and usually heâd take a long run or hike or climb until he was too exhausted to do more than recover.
âSo why is this different?â
Nik glared at his buddyâs shit-eating smirk. âYou know why, asshole.â
âYou really do care about her, donât you?â
âOf course, I do,â Nik bit off. Did he need to spell it out for him? Realizing heâd been clenching his hands in fists, he shook them out.
âYou okay?â Leo asked.
âNo.â Of course, he wasnât okay. He was in love. He grunted at Leoâs snicker. âI hate this.â
âThe waiting?â
âThe feeling. I mean, itâs not like I didnât care about the people Iâve rescued, but itâs more abstract, distant. Getting the job done is the goal and protecting the people is merely a part of it. But protecting Thea is all I can think about. At first I tried viewing this whole thing with her as a job, you knowâkeep her in a boxâbut she keeps hopping out. Did I tell you she took my knife?â
âSeriously? Coop better watch out now that kittyâs got a claw.â
âIt was on my dresser. She left me an IOU,â he huffed. âIâm glad she has it since her Glock is still locked in the gun room, but fuck, I donât like her thinking she needed it. She better not fucking need it.â Nik rubbed at his chest, annoyed with the tension. He clenched his hands. Heâd put a fist through his wall if they werenât all made of log. Pressing his knuckles into his eyes, he let out a groan. âDamn it. I shouldâve gone with her.â
âSheâs safe with Coop. Youâll be back with her soon.â
âI donât want her with Coop. I want her with me.â He closed his eyes, picturing her sweet body tangled around his. But it wasnât just her body he wanted again. It was everything about the woman. All the smiles. All the soft. All the sweet. All the sass. All the sexy. He wantedâŠ
