Kieran groaned angrily, âNaomi and Worm could be dead, their killer in that very room, and youâd let her walk?â
âKeep your voice down!â Mac insisted. âIf she figures out what weâre gonna do, sheâll find a way to counteract it.â
âWell then, itâs settled.â Cora clapped her hands together. âWeâll interrogate her for the truth, but we wonât--â
âCora!â Aoife desperately cried out from the living room.
âAoife!â She shouted back as the group all rushed through the cottage.
âOh god!â Cora remarked as she swung open the living room door and saw Aoife lying on the ground with a gash across her cheek. Instantly, she dropped down to her friendâs side and produced a cloth from her pocket, using it to clean the wound.
âDammit!â Kieran cursed upon seeing an empty chair on the other side of the living room with cut ropes surrounding it.
Aoife was shaking, pretending to be terrified, âS-she attacked meâŠâ
âItâs okay, Iâve got you!â Cora continued wiping away the blood. âMac, get some alcohol or something! A needle too! Weâre gonna need to stitch this upâŠâ
Now, Kieranâs eyes softened, as he began to accept the possibility that his accusations of foul play about Aoife were incorrect.
Chapter 4: Youâll Find It
Gwen stood at the very edge of the cliff and gawked at the deep blue ocean ahead of her. Her lungs were refreshed by the salty sea air, and her soul was healed by the feeling of freedom.
Silently, Annabelle took her motherâs hand and then stood by her motherâs side.
Then, her other hand was met by another; Elliotâs.
The three of them all breathed in deeply as they felt surges of wind rush through their hair, bringing them a sense of peace.
âI know what youâre looking for,â Annabelle mumbled.
âBut youâre looking in the wrong place.â Elliot completed her sentence.
Gwen looked from one of them to the other, breaking the trance of surrealism.
âYouâre trying to prove yourself to us,â Annabelle said mystically, as though she could read her motherâs mind.
âAnd youâre trying too hard in doing so.â Elliotâs follow-up was no less eerie.
The siblings continued to speak in this âone-twoâ pattern as Gwen looked between the two of them.
âYou went away for almost a year,â
âAnd then we found you in Prague.â
âElliot lost his sight,â
âAnnabelle lost her mind.â
âWas it worth it?â
âWas it worth it?â
Gwen stuttered out of both confusion and regret.
âReed died and you were elsewhere.â
âZach and Celeste died, and you were elsewhere.â
Gwen let go of their hands and instead used hers to cover her face. âStop it. Weâve been through this.â
âBut itâs okay!â Annabelleâs voice turned gentle.
âWe donât begrudge you for that.â As did Elliotâs.
âYou want to make up for all the time you were away,â
âYou blame what happened to us on yourself, but itâs not your fault I lost my sight.â
Gwen turned around and began storming away from the cliff.
âI know what youâre looking for,â Annabelle repeated herself.
âBut you wonât find redemption through revenge.â Elliot became stern.
Finally, Gwen snapped, and turned back around, âIt wasnât about revenge dammit!â
Both her daughter and her friend-turned-stepson fell silent.
âIt was about protecting you! Both of you!â She explained. âWhatever they did to you, Annabelle⊠I didnât go after Jaxon to get revenge, I did it to make sure he couldnât hurt you again⊠Thatâs why!â She stomped as she shouted.
Annabelle smirked.
Then, Gwen turned to Elliot, âIf Iâd have just stayed⊠Sonia wouldnât have won. She wouldnât have hurt you the way she did. Iâm so sorry Elliot.â
But he too smirked. âAnd then I never wouldâve let Sonia go. I never wouldâve been able to be better than who I was. I may have lost my sight, but I found something so much more valuable.â He began walking towards her.
âAnd me,â Annabelle step towards her as well, âIâll be far stronger now. However long I live, what J.V.âs family did to me, itâll harden me.â
Elliot offered his hand out to his stepmother, âCome.â His smirk turned into a welcoming smile. âTake a step back, just for a whileâŠâ
Back at the town, everybody had gathered in the church, which was farther down towards the end of the riverside. It was quite small and medieval, comprised primarily of stone.
Erica and Tina stood in the pulpit, addressing those gathered in front of them. The congregation had been prompted by the sighting of the fighter jets in the skies above them.
âWe all know what we saw!â Adela called out. âFive fighter jets! Clear as day!â
Erica nodded, âThatâs right!â She responded in kind. âMake no mistake, weâre not going to try and cover this up to you. No doubt about it, something rather bizarre happened earlier today.â
âSo why are we still standing here?â Oliver criticised with his arms crossed. âThey headed East! Thereâs not much more of this country in that direction. One scouting party wouldnât hurt!â
Tina shook her head, âWeâre standing here for that very reason: Nobody is to go and investigate what we saw.â
They all began to mumble in confusion with each other.
âThatâs a joke, right?â Adela asked.
âNope. Not a joke.â Tina asserted seriously.
A younger girl emerged from behind Adela; it was her sister, Tia. âBut the soldiers can help us!â
Tina and Erica looked to each other awkwardly; they had encountered evil militias before, but how were they supposed to explain this to a child?
âIt isnâtâŠâ Tina stuttered. âIt isnât like that, Tia.â
âWhy?â
âSome peopleâŠâ She swallowed hard. âSome people just donât want to help others.â
An awkward silence then encumbered the church.
Elliot and Annabelle guided Gwen to an open area within a forest.
âDo you remember this place?â Elliot asked his mother.
She looked around at the dying Autumn trees
