It wasnât until we were back on the interstate, with the bags of fast-food having been sitting in the passengerâs seat for a good ten minutes, filling the interior with its intoxicating scent, that Winter finally roused.
Or rather, she went from sound asleep to her pale green eyes popping open almost in alarm. She immediately sat up, looking around for a second before she focused on me staring at her with a half-eaten burger in my hand.
When her gaze abruptly shifted to it, obvious hunger sparking in her eyes, I gestured to the seat next to me. Her eyes widened in surprise, followed immediately by her looking emotional for half a second, before she reached forward to lift the bags in one hand and gracefully climbed back into the front seat, placing them back on her lap.
Again, I had a face full of her tight ass, and it was nearly impossible to not react to it. And shit, was she wearing latex panties?! Shit, she was! I saw her panties peeking out! I could only imagine it must be just in case I used my newly obtained pyrogenesis, but damn! She was wearing her fireproof underwear!
Except for me, I didnât think about it primarily as being âfireproof.â I thought about it as something hot and sexy. The fact that it was fireproof was a completely ancillary feature to an otherwise seductive, enticing, sensual article of clothing.
Dammit, Sam, pull it together!
As I tried to think more analytically about it, I realized that one of the reason latex panties were impractical for most women was because it didnât let the skin breathe, resulting in them getting very sweaty in places theyâd prefer not to be. However, the fact that Iâd never seen Winter break a sweat, despite the fact that she had fur, made me wonder if it took more for her body to react to the heat.
At the very least, she didnât seem uncomfortableâŠ
And I probably shouldnât be focusing on it, when she could hear every perverted thought that popped into my head.
Thankfully, Winter ignored my thoughts.
âHow far away are we?â she wondered, completely composed, unwrapping one of her meals.
It probably wasnât the first time someone had thought vulgar things around her, about her â far from it.
I cleared my throat. âGPS says fifteen minutes.â
She nodded, taking her first bite.
I knew sheâd be pressed for time to finish all that food before we arrived, so I just let her eat, instead of trying to socialize. Granted, it was only just a little after four oâclock, so weâd still have plenty of time to scope out the hospital even if she needed to take another five or ten minutes to finish after parking.
But I also suspected she probably wouldnât want to do that, so I kept my mouth shut.
She paused the moment I thought that, quickly swallowing. âThank you.â She hesitated. âAnd thank you for the food too.â She then resumed eating.
I couldnât help but smile.
Figuring Iâd check in on everyone back home, I sent them a message, only to get a response from Lily about how sheâd completely forgotten about her surgery coming up on Monday. Shit, Iâd kind of forgotten too, since it was Freya who got her scheduled. Usually I probably would have asked what day it was, now that it was closer to the date, but so much had been going on that it slipped my mind.
But now that I was thinking about it, I wondered how that would work with her being a regenerator now. Obviously, sheâd heal right away, but healing too quickly could be problematic for something like implant surgery. Or any surgery for that matter.
When we pulled off the interstate and took a few city roads, toward the north side, I finally took over the driving again, since the hospital was now in sight. Grandview Memorial wasnât downtown like I assumed it would be, instead being on the outskirts, appearing to have been built in the last fifty years or so. Which was saying something. Hospitals built that recently were pretty wealthy looking, as if they were the upper class of medical centers, even though they still treated everyone â all people, from the most well-off, to the homeless.
But damn, this place was seriously nice.
Bright white walls on the outside, lush green lawns, large trees, and elaborate landscaping, along with roads made of those dark hard-plastic tiles that doubled as solar panels. Following the signs for the parking garages, since I figured weâd be here for a while, I made my way around the side of the behemoth building.
Once we were in the garage, with me driving slowly as I searched for a spot, Winter angled in her seat more toward me.
âIâm going to need your help,â she said bluntly.
âOkay,â I agreed. âWhat do you need me to do?â
She paused. âThere are a lot of people here. A lot of minds to scope out.â
I slid into a space, and then gave her my full attention.
âOkay,â I said again, waiting for her to continue.
âI will begin from right here. But once we are walking, I need you to hold onto me.â
My eyes widened slightly. âOh. Okay. Yeah, I can do that.â
âLike, wrap your arm around me so I donât have to focus so much on where Iâm going.â
I nodded. âYeah, I can do that,â I repeated.
âI might want to sit down, or otherwise stop somewhere to focus on someone in particular.â She paused again. âAnd I might also pretend like I have a really bad headache when I really need to concentrate.â Another pause. âI donât have a headache, so donât worry about me. Itâs just an act.â
Now I was a little skeptical. âAre you being honest?â
âYes.â
âPromise?â
âYes.â She nodded. âMy ability doesnât give me a headache, no matter how much I use it. But, especially because of my appearance, people seem to perceive it as normal when I stop and look like I have a migraine.â
âBecause
