Moto felt Sari drain off the energy Kaily gathered. He was impressed Sari commanded that kind of power and control. They would talk about all she kept hidden from him in the near future. He knew Sari since she was a small child, they were friends. He was with her when she obtained her talisman. He was with her when she started training to use her powers. He was with her when the Queen appointed her as Shanees. In all this time, he never once suspected the depths of her abilities. He should have considered why she didn't use her abilities much after she became Shanees. When she first came into her abilities, she used them almost nonstop. He should have questioned her in greater detail and not let it go. He'd grown tired of the arguments over it, and let it go. He vowed he would not be so complaisant in the future.
Moto turned from his contemplation back to what took place in front of him. Sari moved her hands further down Kaily's body and the crease in her brow deepened with concentration. Sweat broke out on Sari's forehead. Moto and Shimani loosened their grip on Kaily but remained where they knelt. Again, a faint glow emanated from Sari's hands. Moto was certain now he didn't imagine it.
After what seemed an eternity to Moto, Sari let the energy of Ki flow back into the ground. Moto didn't know how much time passed since finding Kaily in that destroyed clear, only that each moment that passed felt like an eternity. Sari sat back on her heels and picked up Kaily's talisman. Moto watched as Sari held the cloth and talisman in the palm of her hands. He noticed she didn't allow herself to touch the talisman. She kept the cloth between her and the stone. Moto watched in awe as a transparent fire unlike anything he saw before surrounded the stone. The fire cleansed the talisman, so it once again gleamed. All traces of blood and tissue removed.
Sari put Kaily's talisman in the pouch she called forth. "Keep this safe for Kaily," Sari handed the pouch with the talisman inside to Moto. "Don't give it back to her until," Sari glanced around the clearing and then back to Moto, "until she learns control." She finished with a heavy sigh.
Moto nodded but didn't reply. What could he say? At that moment, he had no intention of ever giving the talisman back to Kaily. He had half a mind to drop it back into Crystal Lake. He placed the pouch in the inside pocket of his vest. "Now, what do I do?" He asked, looking down at Kaily. He brushed a strand of her hair away from her face. "I can't take her back to her home, can I?"
"No, you can't." Sari said. "Now that her abilities have awakened you need to train her. She can't be left untrained, Moto." Sari and Shimani exchanged a look.
Moto ignored it. He focused on Kaily. "I know." He said. "I don't know of any place to take her." He didn't know how he would train her either. He kept that part to himself.
"I do." Shimani offered. "I found some caves a while back that will work. There are some pools nearby that will help her heal. One part of the caves was converted to a living space, and another part is shielded and will be good for a training room."
"Why didn't you tell me about them earlier?" Moto asked. It would have saved Kaily and him a lot of difficulty if he knew about those earlier, say before he brought Kaily to his village.
Shimani shrugged, "it didn't occur to me."
Moto opened his mouth to admonish Shimani for not sharing that information.
"Shimani, take Moto and Kaily to the caves," Sari interrupted. "I will gather some supplies to hold you over until we can get more to you." Sari directed her attention back to Shimani," once you get them settled, portal to my hut. You can help bring the supplies and show me the caves you're taking them to. Moto, Kaily is going to need time to rest and heal, and peace to do both."
Moto nodded. He knew Sari's interruption was her way of telling him to let it go with Shimani. It didn't matter. What was done, was done. He hadn't consulted anyone before bringing Kaily to his village. That was on him. He picked Kaily up and cradled her in his arms. He allowed her head to rest against his chest, close to his heart. "Is Kaily going to be okay?" Moto asked Sari.
Sari laid a hand on Kaily's head and held Moto's gaze. "She will sleep through the night, I hope. I will bring you some salve to apply where the talisman fused and will give her another healing session. I believe we got to her early enough she'll recover."
"Thank you," Moto said. "My apologizes for putting you in this position." He nodded his head towards Sari. "My absence from your side is bound to raise questions."
Sari laid a finger across his lips. "No apologies necessary."
"She's the future Queen." Shimani chimed in. "What can they do to her?"
Sari gave Shimani a shove. "Go, before you get yourself in trouble with the future Queen." She turned her attention to Moto. "I know you have questions, but we'll talk more in the coming days. Right now, you need to focus on getting Kaily someplace she'll be safe and able to rest."
"Agreed," Moto said. "Thank you for helping. I appreciate it."
Sari inclined her head.
Shimani opened a portal and waited for Moto to step through with Kaily,
