Instead they tell me that Baby Wendy is with Grammy and Granddad.
I look at Maura. Her mouth is a thin tight line.
âCan you tell us what happened?â says Brian.
So I say, âGloria tried to take me up to Canada.â
âDid she try to force you into the car?â
âYes.â
âHow did you get away?â
âI said no and yelled.â
âYou did?â says Maura.
I nod my head yes.
âWhy?â she says. Then her voice gets louder. âWhy, Ginny? Because we know you set the whole thing up. We found the cell phone outside your window. Youâve been trying to go with Gloria ever since you found her on Facebook. So why the hell didnât you go with her when you finally had the chance? Why?â
I donât say anything. I try to be calm. Brian looks at the door and then back. âIt doesnât matter anymore,â he says to Maura.
âIt doesnât matter? Of course it matters! I want to know why she didnât go! I want to know why, after lying and stealing and setting the whole thing up, she didnât go through with it!â Then she looks at me. âGloria still has your Baby Doll, doesnât she? Gloria still has little Krystal, right? So why are you still here?â
My throat is tight and that was two very different questions but I know I have to tell them. âBecause my Baby Doll is six years old,â I say.
âYou saw her, then,â says Brian. âYour sister was there when you went to see Gloria.â
I nod my head yes.
âBut you didnât get in the car with them.â
I shake my head no.
âTell us why again,â says Maura. âExplain it.â
âBecause sheâs not a baby anymore,â I say. âMy Baby Doll doesnât need me.â
âThatâs it?â says Maura. âThatâs why you didnât get in the car?â
I nod my head yes again. âPlus I know Gloriaâs going to get caught.â
âWhy do you say that?â
âBecause sheâs completely unreliable.â
âHumph,â says Maura. âWhat did she say when you said you werenât going?â
âShe said I was a real piece of work and a handful. She said Iâm too much and sheâs just not enough.â
âReally?â says Brian.
Maura steps backward. Her eyes get big like Ms. Carolâs and a space opens between her lips. âReally?â she says.
And that was the same question twice from different people but still I say, âYes.â
Then Brian says, âIt sounds like she was angry.â
âShe was very angry,â I say.
âWhat did she do after that?â
âAfter what?â
âAfter she said you were a real handful,â says Brian.
âShe told me to have a nice life.â
âI donât believe it,â Maura says.
And again Brian says, âReally?â
I nod my head yes.
âThen thatâs it,â says Brian. âSo itâs all over?â
âI wouldnât count on that,â says Maura. âNot yet. But right now we need to know where Gloria went. Ginny, do you know? Do you know where they were going? We really need to find out.â
I keep my mouth shut tight. Then I shake my head no. Because I donât want to help the police catch Gloria. I donât want to be the one who helped find her. The police can do that without me and then my Baby DollâKrystal with a Kâwill be safe.
âWell, weâll let the police figure that out,â says Maura. âYouâll talk with Patrice about it, too, but it sounds to me like we finally might have some closure here. Some real closure.â
âSo Iâm not going to live here?â
âOf course you arenât going to live here. Youâre coming home with us as soon as the doctor has a look at you.â
I look at the clock behind them. It says 12:42 in the afternoon but I donât really believe that thatâs what time it is. Nothing adds up anymore.
EXACTLY 10:58 IN THE MORNING,
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26TH
Patrice is sitting in her flower chair. We have been talking for approximately one hour. I didnât go to school because there is some more business that I need to take care of. I am petting Agamemnon. Patrice put him on my lap again. He is purring and that makes me relax.
âWell, thatâs it, then,â says Patrice. âYouâre going to get another chance.â
I reach over to the table next to me and pick up another brownie.
âNow that Gloria is completely out of the picture and youâve proven that you donât want to go with her, Brian and Maura are willing to give it another try. Isnât that great?â
âMmm-hmm,â I say.
âIs there anything youâre wondering about?â
âMmm-hmm,â I say again. I swallow and take a drink of milk. âAm I going back to Saint Genevieveâs Home for Girls Who Arenât Safe?â
âNot yet,â says Patrice. She smiles. âMaura was really surprised that you stood up to Gloria. All of us were completely shocked, really. But Maura sees it as a sign that things have changed for the better. In you. Sheâs willing to try now. Sheâs willing to let you stay and see how things go. So, as long as things keep on getting better, youâre not going to Saint Genevieveâs. Youâre going to stay right where you are.â
I look around.
âAt the Blue House,â says Patrice.
I pet Agamemnon some more.
âBut weâre going to have to work hard to get you reintegrated at school. You stole three phones and ran away from Ms. Carol. Weâll need to write some âIâm sorryâ letters again. I think everyone will understand. Especially now that Gloria is out of the picture.â She drinks her coffee. âBut we need to talk a little more about what happened. There are some details that are missing. Everything doesnât quite add up.â
I stop petting Agamemnon. Does Patrice know that this is the wrong side of the equal sign? I wonder if the details weâll find will help me get back to the other side of Forever. I wonder if theyâll help everything work right again.
âSo you went to Cumberland Farms,â says Patrice, âand you had a lot of clothes and a gallon of
