sheā€™s breathing in and out roughly through her nose. I want to let it be, but letā€™s face it, Iā€™ve never been that type of dude. The only ones who ignore shit right in front of their faces are pussies.

ā€œMorning,ā€ I keep my tone casual, like normal, and wait for her response. I donā€™t take my eyes off her body, and quickly enough sheā€™s responding to me.

ā€œMorning,ā€ itā€™s one word, but Iā€™ll take it.

ā€œCoffee should be done in a few minutes,ā€ I say matter-of-factly, carefully assessing the situation in front of me.

ā€œCool.ā€ Her tone is so cold, and her voice is gravelly, like sheā€™s parched or sheā€™s fighting back the urge to bust out into tears before my very eyes. Iā€™d bet on the latter.

ā€œWhatā€™s going on with you?ā€ I cut straight to the point, waiting for some sort of response. A few moments pass by and I still donā€™t get it, so I speak up again, only this time I clear my throat, ā€œVenom, what the hell is going on?ā€

She moves her hands from her face and stares right at me. ā€œNothing.ā€

ā€œYouā€™ve never been a bad liar until now,ā€ Iā€™m blunt, but I get straight to the point.

She pinches her lips together and I donā€™t miss the way she curses under her breath. While sheā€™s making her frustration clear, I donā€™t give a flying fuck. I want to get to the bottom of this.

ā€œJust leave it alone, will you?ā€

ā€œNot gonna happen. Iā€™ve bit my tongue for a few days and Iā€™m not going to ignore something happening blatantly right in front of my eyes. Youā€™ve been drinking more, sleeping less. Youā€™re snapping at the people who care about you . . . what for? What the fuck is going on?ā€ I really wish I knew her name, that I could pull it out of a hat but I donā€™t know that about her. Hell, I donā€™t think any of us do. After she first came here, I brought it up to Boss, but Boss told me it didnā€™t matter what her past was, or if she wanted to keep things from us, how it was a safe place and she could keep whatever demons she had in the past right where they were. Itā€™s insane. Venom is as close to me as Emerson is and yet I donā€™t even know her fucking name.

ā€œNothing is going on. Iā€™m just tired. I told you already.ā€

ā€œBullshit. Somethingā€™s going on and youā€™re not talking to anyone. How are you even getting it out?ā€ At this point my toneā€™s getting nastier as Iā€™m now getting frustrated. She couldā€™ve just told me and I mightā€™ve been able to help her somehow, but instead sheā€™s only getting more and more upset, more guarded.

ā€œItā€™s my business, Ricochet. If you donā€™t like it then oh well,ā€ Venom snaps in my direction and the coffee beeps at the same time, signaling itā€™s ready.

I turn around and get her a cup before getting one for myself, then go and hand one off to her. She leaves the cup on the island for a minute before taking it, and while Iā€™m aggravated as hell with her, it is a peace offering of sorts.

I stand while she sits and we both sip on our coffees. After a few minutes, I think weā€™ve both calmed down enough to speak normally. ā€œIf youā€™re not gonna talk to me about it, will you at least get your energy out somehow?ā€

Venom raises her brows. ā€œYeah, and how do you suggest I do that?ā€

I shrug my shoulders and take a sip of coffee. ā€œI donā€™t know. A fucking workout? Something to get your heart rate up and some sweat goinā€™.ā€

ā€œIā€™m not fucking you,ā€ Venom immediately says.

ā€œWhen did I ever suggest that? Jesus. I mean, you need a workout. Fuck. You finish your coffee and then I wanna take you somewhere.ā€

Thankfully she didnā€™t put up a fight when it came to this. She finished her damn coffee, changed her outfit and met me back downstairs. Now weā€™re walking down the street and Iā€™m about to take her to the one place where I find solace. Some people go to church, or temple. Not me. I come hereā€”the gym.

Iā€™m not one of those muscle heads who lift weights and get into bodybuilding competitions. But, every now and again I need to get some frustrations out in a positive way. There isnā€™t always stuff goinā€™ on at the club. I mean, we get into issues with people and whatnot, but it isnā€™t like those situations are refā€™d and you have someone telling you if youā€™re takinā€™ it too damn far. While I donā€™t mind my adrenaline pumping every now and again with a situation I canā€™t control, I donā€™t go looking for trouble. Itā€™s how I became good friends with Frank, who owns the place around the corner.

I pull the door open for Venom and the two of us walk in. Not many people are here this early in the morning, but Frank and a few of his boys are always around. Itā€™s like they never leave the place. ā€œAye, Ricochet! Whatā€™s up, my man?ā€ Frank calls over to me, standing from where he was sitting a moment ago. Heā€™s wearing some sort of jogger outfit and has a gold chain hanginā€™ around his neck.

ā€œNothinā€™ much, just cominā€™ here to get some steam burnt off. This is Venom, sheā€™s in the club with me. Venom, this is Frank.ā€ The two of them say their introductions and I cut to the chase. ā€œYou got anyone she can spar with for a bit?ā€

He grimaces. ā€œNot right now, man. Marlena wonā€™t be in until seven at least but knowinā€™ you youā€™re not gonna be around that long.ā€

ā€œYeah, maybe twenty, thirty minutes,ā€ I reply.

ā€œAlright, you spar with her then. You know how to take it easy, and I know you wonā€™t hurt her, so you help ā€˜er get out whatever she needs to.ā€ Frankā€™s opened up his gym to everyone who needs
