âThe folk down there, they ainât so desperate as that,â said Cajun. âDespite Malmoradanâs maintaininâ that nullies are all indentured and barren urchins, his is a limited-experience opinion oâ privilege, him beinâ ocelini and all. On my walk, I found nullies to be a salty, rugged bunch, and it ainât exactly like theyâve never seen a starship. The space stations send food down in shuttles on the regular. Plus, if any of âem punches out early, they lose their share oâ the profits, whatever comes from this site. I garrontee ya, ainât none of âem endured the extremes of Arsenal Bay just to give up that money.â
âOh,â said Casey. âRemind me to consult you first regarding countdown planets.â
âĂa câest bon. Ainât exactly come up before, seeinâ as how this is our first trip to a countdown planet together, and Malmoradanâs notoriously good at digginâ up or just knowinâ the word on the street.â
âHow do you recommend we proceed?â asked Casey.
âSpikes are sealed affairs, so we ainât gettinâ in but one of two ways,â said Cajun. âBreachinâ, which would be as difficult as it is depraved, or settinâ down inside, which means the loadinâ platform. Takinâ our shuttle down might bewilder the locals, so seems to me we should consider catchinâ a ride, maybe with the delivery shuttle from Hectorâs space station.â
Sturmhardt gasped. âHe owns his own space station?â
âNo maâam, he does not,â said Cajun, âAnd to clarify, each spike gets their supplies from one station, which is shared between three or four spikes, dependinâ on logistics. Said station in turn recycles the waste they send back for re-issue.â
âYouâre only talking about zee garbage, ja?â asked Sturmhardt.
Slowly, Cajun shook his head, and he grinned. âNo maâam, I am not.â
âAll the waste?â asked KranĂ©.
âNot all,â said Cajun. âSome wasteânamely the liquid varietyâgets reclaimed on the surface. Now, before anyone here bursts from sheer disgust, suppose those space stations were covered in greenhouses. Even then, ya think theyâd make enough food for so many for ten years?â
âNo, I suppose not,â said KranĂ©.
âItâs an elegant system,â said Edison. âIf you donât think too hard about it.â
âIf zey offer me any food, Iâm saying no. I vonât even be polite about it,â said Sturmhardt.
Cajun laughed. âIâll remind ya âbout that when the hunger gets bad.â
âWeâll be bringing our own rations,â said Casey. âNone of us here is accustomed to eating recycled food, and I donât want anyone getting sick. Sturmhardt, you and Shulana wonât need to worry about it, since youâll be staying up here with the ship. Cajun, catching a ride with the local supply drop sounds like a good plan. Work with Edison to get me the right space station. Both of you meet me in the hangar bay at oh-six hundred. KranĂ©, you have the conn while weâre away. Iâll rally our guests.â
âââ
Caseyâs team gathered round the shuttleâs side airlock, as Shulana and Ikunku packed and loaded their supplies. Casey regarded Orin and Mike. âApril, Malmoradan, and Shona have already agreed to do this as contractors, but thatâs not something either of you can do, unfortunately. Mike, since you wonât surrender Nimbus into our careâwhich I getâthat means the only way you guys can join us is if I temporarily deputize you both. Are you willing to take the oath?â
âIâm Falcon, not Planetian,â said Mike. âHow would that work?â
âWhy do so many people assume the Interstellar Police Force is part of the United Planets?â muttered Casey. âWeâre pan-galactic, Mike. Deputizing you is completely legitimate. In fact, the Centauri Systemâs Deputy Overchief is Falcon, now that I think of it.â
âHow long would it last?â asked Mike.
âAs long as weâre working together in an official capacity,â said Casey. âLonger, if you want to keep doing law enforcement work, but by default your tenure as a deputy expires when this job is done.â
Mike gave it some thought. âMaybe I can leverage this into a work experience credit at New Cal in place of my leave of absence. Would you be willing to write me an endorsement?â
âWhatâs your major?â asked Casey.
âCriminal Justice,â said Mike. âIâm planning to get into Law School in the next couple of years.â
Casey smiled and nodded. âIâm sure we can figure something out.â She guided Orin and Mike through the oath. When she was done, Malmoradan showed them how to equip the tactical vests, as well as how to use the lamps and gadgets built into them.
When everything was ready, Casey bid Ikunku and Shulana thanks and farewell. As soon as they had exited the hold, she led her team aboard and sat down for pre-flight. April joined her in the cockpit and secured the shuttle for launch.
âââ
Tightly gripping the shuttleâs controls, Casey tracked the scene framed by the forward viewport. To her left, Arsenal Bayâs hazy southern pole curved up and down beyond her field of vision. Directly above her, a space station spun slowly on its axis as it rocketed around the planet, a tiny white lotus against the galactic coreâs supercluster of stars.
April studied the flight data. âWeâre up to sublight-5,â she whispered.
âWell, we have to catch up to it,â said Casey.
April leaned forward. âHow fast is the space station going?â
âTheyâre all running a steady 4.6,â said Casey.
April quietly whistled. âThatâs so fast.â
âItâs slower than most,â said Casey. âThink about it. The bigger the planet, the faster you need to go to maintain a stable orbit. The space stations around Rhyon are practically doing sublight-8.â
âWow,â said April. âI had no idea.â
âI wouldnât worry about it,â said Casey. âThis may be your first space station docking maneuver, but itâs definitely not mine.â
Orin, Malmoradan, Mike, Shona, Edison, and Cajun sat within the passenger compartment. âWhy didnât they answer any of my hails?â asked Shona. She glanced at her comrades. âNone of the space stations answered. Not one.â
âCouldnât tell you,â said Malmoradan. He
