âAnd what about the slippers?â asked Brutus.
âOne of the maids had expressed her bewilderment at how she put Franklinâs slippers on one side of the bed at night, and how in the morning she always found them on the other side. A man can change identities, but he just might forget on which side of the bed the twin he murdered used to get up in the morning.â
âBut how did you know he was going to try and kill Francine Ritter?â
âI remembered how frightened Franklin had looked just after meeting Francine on the street. Iâd figured at the time he was afraid that now heâd have to pay her the child support his brother owed, but why would a man of such wealth be afraid of a measly sum like that? No, he was scared, all rightâscared because he knew that Francine had recognized him, and that as long as she was around, his secret would never be safe.â
âAnd so he tried to make sure sheâd never talk again,â said Brutus, nodding.
âWhat a story,â said Harriet. âAnd what a good thing you figured it out in time, Max. Or else those two girls would be orphans now.â
âFrancine and her girls are going to move in with Ruth Harrison, by the way,â I said. âSheâs finally realized that her former daughter-in-law didnât have a bad influence on Franklin, but that Franklin was actually the debilitating influence in her life.â
âSo Jane is going to have her friends back?â asked Dooley happily.
âYes, Dooley,â I said with a smile. âJane will finally have her friends back, and Ruth will finally get to spend more time with her granddaughtersâin fact sheâll be spending all of her time with them, as sheâs looking for a CEO to run the business from now on.â
âSee?â said Gran. âI knew that Joshua was innocent. Odeliaâs clients always are.â
âJoshua was never my client, Gran,â said Odelia, pressing her point again. âIâm just a reporter, and reporters donât have clients. We only have stories to pursue.â
âWell, this sure was one hell of a story,â said Marge. âAnyone more potato salad?â
And while Marge ladled more potato salad onto everyoneâs plates, Charlene gave Uncle Alec a little shove. âWell?â she said when he didnât react. âWasnât there something you wanted to say?â
âUmâŠâ said the Chief, scratching his scalp. âWell, Iâm afraid Iâve acted like a fool, Odelia. I thought you were hampering my case, while in fact you were solving it. SoâŠâ
âThatâs all right, Uncle Alec,â said Odelia magnanimously. âYou donât have to apologize.â
âActually Iâm the one who should apologize to you, Chief,â said Chase. âEven though you told me not to, I kept feeding Odelia information from the investigation.â
âI knew you did,â Uncle Alec grumbled. âBut thatâs all right. If you hadnât, Francine Ritter would be dead right now, and Joshua Curtis would still be in jailâan innocent man.â He sighed deeply. âMaybe Iâm getting too old for this stuff.â
âNonsense,â said Charlene curtly. âYou just need to learn to listen to your niece. Sheâs a smart cookie. But since the apple doesnât fall from the tree, youâre a smart cookie, too, all right?â
âMore like hardtack,â he said with a grimace.
âAnd you owe me an apology, too, by the way,â said Gran. âScarlett and I did the right thing trying to get rid of that evidence, isnât that so, Scarlett?â
âUm, not too sure about that, Vesta,â said Scarlett.
âYeah, not too sure about that either,â said the Chief with a not-so-apologetic look at his mother and her friend. âNext time you pull a stunt like that Iâm keeping you two overnight. Is that understood?â
âYes, Alec,â said Scarlett meekly.
âYes, Alec,â Gran said, equally meekly, after getting a full dose of her sonâs irritation.
âSo how is cat choir?â asked Odelia as she joined us, and came bearing gifts in the form of a few little prize nuggets of meat sheâd saved from total annihilation for us.
âCat choir is just grand,â said Harriet. âShanille and I have made up, and Max has decided to let us into his new cat choir, isnât that right, Max?â
âYeah, but you know the conditions, Harriet.â
âWhat are the conditions?â asked Odelia with a smile.
âNo more fighting!â said Brutus and Dooley in unison.
âSounds like a great idea,â said Odelia, and gave us all cuddles and kisses, then whispered into my ear, âYou did great, Max. And whatâs even better: you made me look good, too. So thank you for that.â
âI couldnât have done it without you, Odelia,â I said. Which was absolutely true.
âWe make a great team, donât we, buddy?â
âYes, we do.â
Suddenly Dooley raised his eyes, and started saying, âShoo! Shoo! We donât want you here, stork! Shoo!â
âThatâs not a stork, Dooley,â I said. âThatâs a pigeon.â
âOh, phew,â he said, and sank down onto the porch swing again, not meeting Odeliaâs eye.
âDooley, for the last time, Chase and I are not going to start a family just yet. Okay?â She gave him an extra cuddle. âYou guys are my family. And right now youâre all I need.â
And wasnât that the best endorsement any cat could hope to get from their human?
Dooley leaned over to me and whispered, âDo you think I should take down that âStork, go home!â sign now, Max?â
âYeah, I think thatâs probably a good idea, Dooley,â I whispered back.

The Mysteries of Max - Book 33
Chapter 1
Look, donât get me wrong: I enjoy a murder even less than the next cat, even though it isnât necessarily my own species whoâs affected by this tragic loss of life. But when the only cases coming Odeliaâs way are spouses wanting to catch their other spouses in the act of cheating on those selfsame spousesâthe first spouses, not the second ones, if you see what I meanâlife becomes pretty dull and monotony soon reigns supreme.
Dooley, though, didnât seem to mind all these people being cheated uponâor is it cheated onâfrom finding their way into Odeliaâs office. But then again, Dooley watches a lot of daytime soaps, and
