“Don’t worry. If you skruck up hard enough and black out, your autopilot will kick in. Last but not least, the Dragonfire is equipped with two in-arm point-one gigawatt Kurkullan VPS Hellblades.”
“What’s that?” I chuckled appreciatively.
“A vorpal plasma sword. You have two of them.”
“And how much power did you say?”
“Zero point one gigawatts per sword.”
“Point one gigawatts?!” I laughed.
“Yes.”
“That’s the power output of, I don’t know, one thousand electric cars.”
“It’s also the power of each plasma sword. Use them wisely.”
“That’s an understatement,” I chortled. “Are mine charged up?”
“They will be once you charge them.”
“How do I do that?”
“They charge off your rig’s reactor core. Five minutes after you fire it up and reach operating temperature, your Hellblades will be ready for use.”
“How much power do the blades suck? I mean, can I use them indefinitely before it impacts flight performance?”
“Five continuous minutes is your hard limit. That will completely drain the capacitors for the swords. It’ll take at least five minutes to recharge them if you’re idling on the ground. Longer if you’re in the middle of maneuvers.”
“Five minutes, huh?”
“Yes. Five. Why?”
“Oh, I was just thinking how Star Wars light sabers never run out of battery power and never need charging,” I chortled nerdily.
“Star Wars, my king?”
“Never mind,” I grinned. “How long to charge my plasma swords if I’m in the middle of a dogfight?”
“Dogfight, my king?”
“Air battle.”
“If you’re running at max power, it could take 30 or more minutes to recharge your blades to full. As I said, use them sparingly. Like ammunition.”
“Got it. I’ve flown enough flight simulators to understand ammo management.”
“Have you ever piloted battle armor?”
“Not the flying kind.”
“You’re familiar with infantry armor?”
“Sort of,” I chuckled. “I built my own suit back home. I mean, me and Roland and the team. We built it. I was one of the lead engineers.”
“Building and piloting aren’t the same thing.”
“I was the lead test pilot,” I said proudly because I kicked ass in our exosuit. Ask Roland Chen.
“Test pilot, hmm?”
“Yeah. Er, test driver. No, test walker and jumper,” I chuckled. “Our exosuit couldn’t fly. Is that not good enough for you?”
“Have you seen any combat?”
“Yeah. Plenty,” I said, again proud. If she had asked me the same question several weeks ago, I would’ve answered with a sheepish no. “You were here yesterday with the CyberKnights. And the day before with Titano the trax.” I didn’t bother to mention how I had single-handedly fought my way inside Blorgo’s pirate warship to rescue Cygna, and made successful spacewalks there and back, and made the return trip without a freaking space suit. If all that didn’t qualify as combat, I didn’t know what did.
“I was referring to combat time in a rig like this,” Mira said, her flawless face smiling slightly in the comms window.
“Oh. No rigs. Unless you count my infantry power armor. In that case,” I chuckled, “I’ve seen plenty of combat.”
“I guess that counts,” she snarked. “But no combat as a pilot?”
“No. Not even real piloting without combat. The only flying I’ve ever done is in simulators. The home game kind on my computer. I mean, they’re super accurate nowadays. But they don’t have controls like you get at a professional flight school.”
She sneered a sexy smile, “This bet is going to be so easy.”
Before I could offer a salacious retort, a new voice over comms said, “Colonel Sadys to Crown. Are you there, my king?”
“Crown here,” I grumbled, irritated the colonel was cock-blocking me.
A new window appeared showing the colonel’s face. “My sincerest apologies for interrupting you during your flight lesson, my king,” Sadys said with her usual sleazy servility. Her sexy beauty didn’t make the interruption any less annoying.
“Spit it out, Colonel,” I scowled.
“Yes, well, I regret to inform you we have a slight problem with some of the guardswomen.”
“How slight?” I groaned.
“As slight as any riot, my king.”
“A riot?” I snorted.
“Yes, a riot.”
“An actual in-progress riot?”
“It’s shaping up to be one. It centers around Corporal Syx,” Sadys sneered. “The Devilkin spy.” She said the word spy with acidic disdain.
Her comment caught me off guard. An unexpected jolt of fear hit me in the chest. I was startled, disappointed, and concerned all at the same time. I liked Corporal Syx. I didn’t want her to be a spy. I said carefully, “Did someone catch her spying?”
“You better come see for yourself,” Colonel Sadys said regrettably.
“Okay,” I grumbled. “I’ll be there in a minute.” I closed the comms window for Colonel Sadys and turned to the one for Lieutenant Mira and smirked, “I have a little problem.”
“I know,” Mira tittered confidently. “You’re going to lose our bet.” If she had overheard my conversation with Sadys, she was pretending she hadn’t.
Not wanting to get into it, I said, “Can we pause the bet for a minute? I have to go handle something.”
“I can handle it for you…” Mira purred, “…after I win our bet.”
“Not that kind of a problem,” I chuckled. “Colonel Sadys needs me to handle something.”
“I can handle it better than her,” Mira teased.
“I’m sure you can,” I chortled happily. “I’ll be right back. Hopefully.” There was no telling how long this would take.
“I’ll be wait-iiiing,” Mira singsonged.
—: Chapter 58 :—
An explosion of accusatory shouts echoed inside the expansive, hexagonal outpost Mess Hall. I entered with my erotic entourage in tow. Colonel Sadys was also with us, as were Sergeant Kane and a security detail of armored guardswomen under her command. They carried ABR-17 bolt rifles.
Sadys hadn’t been exaggerating about a riot.
It looked like one had already broken out.
The Mess Hall was a war zone.
Tables and chairs were overturned in the center of the hall like a hurricane had hit. Thankfully, no tables or chairs were currently flying through the air. A huge mob of guardswomen were facing off like two rival gangs preparing to fight over territory, snarling and shouting at each other
