Behind steel bars on cold concrete
and dream of what life could have been
if I'd have had a human friend
I might have had a ball to fetch
a roaring cheer, as I made my catch
my ears would have flapped, as I went for a ride
just me and my buddy - side by side
maybe a trip to the beach, for a run
where I'd snap at the waves, and soak up the sun
then home to my bowl, filled with kibbles and bits
of this and that, and that and this
a stocking at Christmas, that might have my name
We'd romp through the snow, and have our own game
at night - on the couch - we would watch "Jeopardy"
I'd get my ears scratched...and maybe, my belly
we'd snuggle so close, I'd drift off to sleep
and whisper a prayer, that this life I could keep
but dogs like me - don't find homes - as a rule
they tell me I'm bad. I'm just a Pit bull.
Now they're putting me down to sleep
but in my heart I'll always keep
these dreams of what life could have been
if I'd have had
a human friend.
(Dedicated to the shelter dogs who deserve a second chance at happiness; a warm home, and someone to call their own.)
