âWhy do they want you to stay there anyway?â I asked innocently.
âThey want to monitor us and make sure that we arenât âmaking any mistakesâ as my uncle would put it.â
âThatâs what the talk was about? Why did he say that?â
âHe wants me to wait until collage, he has concerns for you well being. âBecause you could almost be the hottest chick on earthâ as David kindly pointed out.â
âCody if you donât want to do this, I can go home.â I said touching his arm gently. He stopped talking to get out of the car and grab out few suit cases out to the car.
âI want you to be here with me, but if my aunt and uncle are going to act like thisâŠâ he trailed off. The ride back to the house is silent until we walked back into the house where Arabella was playing with some dolls in the living room. She yelped happily and ran to hug us. When Arabella was done welcoming us I looked up to find David Jr. staring at me.
âHi David.â I said in response to his stare.
âUncle David needs to speak with you.â He said walking away towards the kitchen where I assume his father was waiting. I followed David into the kitchen and sat at one of the stools at the bar.
âHello Claire.â Uncle David said walking into the kitchen.
âHello Uncle David.â I said turning to face him.
âI know you and my nephew are getting along quite well arenât you? You canât help but notice.â He said answering his own question so I just nodded politely.
âWell earlier I talked to Cody and he said that you both were enjoying your relationship and I hope you donât do anything to mess it up.â
âSir, I have no intention to mess up our relationship. Cody and I have something very special and Iâm sorry for you to have to take these precautions because you think we are too young. We are a perfectly suitable age and he hasnât told his family yet but we are engaged. He asked me last weekend.â
âWhere is your ring?â
âAs not to bring up any suspicions I leave it off waiting for Cody to tell his family, I have it right here in my purse.â I took out a small golden ring with a single diamond in the middle letting it shine underneath the kitchen lights. Uncle David rushed out of the room. I walked slowly in the direction of the living room where I heard excited yelling.
âWELL WHY DIDNâT YOU TELL ME?!?!?!?!?!?â Uncle David asked clutching Codyâs shoulder.
âI didnât know when the right time was.â Cody replied
âWell I am so happy for the two of you.â His uncle beamed at me.
âThank youâ I smiled back.
âWell donât just stand there! Kiss her!â David yelled at Cody making me laugh at Codyâs small blush. I walked over and pecked his cheek to save some humiliation.
âNo. A real kiss.â David demanded of me. I turned and faced him smiling.
âWhy would you like to see?â I asked as Codyâs arm enveloped my waist.
âCause this is your official engagement party so, there has to be a real kiss.â David said stepping closer to me. I turned toward Cody now and just looked at him waiting for him to take the lead. He stared back not daring to make a move.
âOh my godâŠis a passionate kiss that hard to ask for at an engagement party?â David complained. It was then that Cody leaned in and kissed me passionately as the audience in my head went: âAaaawwwwwâ.
âWell thank god! I thought you might be faking your engagement if you guys wouldnât kiss.â David exclaimed and I rustled his sandy blonde hair. Auntie Amy was smiling proudly up at Cody, she was a quiet woman I had figured, but by the look on her face you could tell she was proud and wanted to show it.
âWhen will the wedding be?â Adam asked speaking up for the first time that I had ever heard him.
âSoon dear, but now itâs bed time, itâs getting quite late.â Adamâs mother cooed.
âBut mama, we have a party tonight. Did you forget?â Arabella said tugging on the hem of her motherâs shirt.
âNo, honey, I didnât forget. Itâs very late though and you need your sleep. Tomorrow is a very big day.â Auntie Amy said and took both her childrenâs hands and walked them upstairs to their bedroom. I sat on the love seat expecting Cody to come sit next to me but, the kiss in front of his family must have embarrassed him so he went and sat in a seat to himself while his cousin came and sat next to me. The wedding was clearly the topic on all the boyâs minds.
âSoâŠâ David said waiting for me to pick up the topic.
âArenât you supposed to be in bed too?â I asked kidding with him.
âSsssshhhhhh! Donât tell mommy!â David whispered in a little kid voice with a grin on his face.
Laughing I said: âDonât worry. Your secret is safe with me.â
âThanksâŠso how did you meet Cody? Mustâve been hard to find him, he has such a boring personality.â David said with the same grin on and I could tell he was kidding.
âWe met at a friends party talked, drank. In the end he drove me home and we had made four more dates.â
âAh. Got a pretty girl at a party. Shouldâve known.â He laughed and stood up to go and talk to Cody. I was left on the silky white couch, alone.
The rest of the night went well until we saw the guest room. It was beautiful and sea themed with blue walls and a carpet floor. There was minimal lighting and a master bathroom that also featured the sea theme. The problem was the bed. There was only one, we had never been in the same bed before; it was going to get awkward.
âAuntie Amy do you have another spare bed?â I asked nervously.
âNo. You two are engaged now! You should be sleeping with each other now. Itâs what couples do.â She said with a laugh and closed the door behind her. I glanced at Cody. His face was pale and he hadnât moved a muscle since we had entered the room.
âCody, Iâm sure we can pull it offâŠbut weâll just have to try.â
âI didnât think that we would be reduced to a lie. Weâre not engaged, where did you get that ring?â Cody said without any emotion.
âI didnât either but it got us out of trouble and thatâs what we needed rite? I got the ring from a pawn shop four years ago; I thought it might come in handy someday.â I replied and put my luggage next to the wardrobe.
âWell, it did.â Cody said finally out of his stupor and putting his luggage next to mine.
âYes it did.â I said and walked over and kissed him. I was briefly aware of a door opening but I didnât react to it.
âOh, sorry. I didnât know that youâd beâŠnever mind. Sorry.â David said and backed out of the room closing the door silently. I smiled to myself, just like home.
âWhat was that for? Did you know he was coming?â Cody asked me wrapping his arms around my waist.
âIt was because you needed one and no. I didnât but it got rid of him huh?â I replied and played with the hair on the back of his head. He leaned down and kissed me back. We kept going for about and hour before we decided to unpack our luggage.
