"I know. " I glanced up at Peter, willing him to turn around and look at me. "I understand everything you're saying, it's just so hard! It's hard knowing that we're all alone, that I can never have a normal life, and that you can't either. Because of me."
He turns to look at me, incredulous.
I continue, tears brimming. " I'm sorry" I say in a whisper. " I don't know why I can't control it. I know I should be able to. It just happens. No matter how hard I try to concentrate!"
I can't stop them, as if summoned by the truth spilling out of me, the tears pour down my face. Soon, my body is wracked by sobs and I fall to my knees, my head falling to my hands.
All the pain and lonliness just comes flooding out, as if the truth has set all those compressed feelings free.
It was me. I killed my parents. I subjected Peter to this life of constantly keeping me in check. Everything that has happened since that day two years ago has been my fault.
It's all because of me.
It's because with one touch and a harsh thought, my power kills.
Chapter Three~ The Day of The Accident ~
I jammed the key into the ignition of the old jeep Peter left at home when he left for college, willing the piece of junk to come to life. I exhaled in relief as the engine roared to life. With shaking hands, I steered the car out onto the street. I hadn't even finished Driver's ED yet, but I wasn't going to waste a second. I had to see my parents. They were hurt, possibly worse. Praying that there weren't any police in the area, I sped towards the hospital.
Jerking to a stop in the first open parking spot I see, I get out of the jeep and run across the parking lot to the entrance of the Emergency Room. I ran up to the front desk.
"Excuse me, my name is Kelly Sullivan. I got a call that my parents Micheal and Stacy Sullivan were admitted? Do you know their condition? Can I see them?"
I hated the pity I saw in the nurse's eyes. I knew that I was a mess, I didn't need her expression to tell me the same thing. I was well aware that I looked insane with my unbrushed hair and messed up makeup. I looked as frazzled as I felt. I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket, but I wasn't about to take my attention from the nurse in order to see who was trying to call me. The nurse came over to stand by the computer. She answered my questions in a voice I knew was supposed to be soothing.
"Of course Dear, just let me pull up their information for you. Can you give me a moment to see what I can do for you?"
I quickly nodded my acknowledgement. I didn't want to waste time talking. I needed to see my family. I stood up straight as she started speaking again.
"Alright, it looks like your parents were the subject of a hit and run. Doctor Cleighfield is the one you'll want to talk to. He will have the information you're looking for. I will let him know your're here. You're going to want to go to the waiting room in the East Wing. I can show you where that is if you'd like?"
Once again I nodded my agreement. "Yes, thank you."
I followed her silently as she led me through the cold and disinfected halls. I knew once we got where we where headed, everything would change.
