be a good waiter then.” She teased him, couldn’t resist.

“Well, now we know what career I can pursue if the birds get bored with me.”

“Birds?”

“Airplanes. I call them birds. Sounds nicer. If you say airplane, you think of metal, wings and tires. On the other hand, when you say bird, it immediately gives a soul to it.”

“Wow, how romantic. I like it, from now on I will call them birds too.”

“Maybe we will start a movement, call them birds and make them souls of the sky!”

Laugh after laugh, what they needed both for a long time.

“So, we know what brings me here.” Nick said.

“The bird.”

“Hah, yes, the bird! And you?”

“I work as a lawyer for a company, not here though. I came here to meet a client of ours, has some legal issues, he was asking for a meeting and some legal advice.”

“What part of the law?” Nick asked taking a sip out of his coffee.

“Divorces. The dirtiest part of the law.”

“Ouch! Famous people divorce?”

“Yes. But don’t ask me any names!”

“I wasn’t about to ask you!”

“Yeah right! I know you, Nick! I know how curious you can get!” Jeannie laughed remembering how annoying he could get, like a drooling dog asking for an extra cookie.

“No! Honest! I have changed Jeannie!”

“Long time.”

“Long time what?”

“Long time since someone called me that.”

A moment passed by.

“Does it bother you?”

She just smiled. That was all he needed. To see her smile.

“Are you married?” She was curious.

“No. My job doesn’t let me.”

“What do you mean?”

“I am married to the sky. I spend more time up there than down here. Even eagles tell me when we meet up there, don’t you get bored being up in the sky all the time?” He finished in deeper voice making her laugh again.

“You haven’t changed at all, stupid!”

“And you? Are you married?”

“No.” A few long seconds passed between them. “But, I can’t say I wasn’t asked the question though. That train left the station a long time ago.” She finished looking at him with sadness in her eyes, giving him the look like when someone realizes that he or she made a mistake once. In this case, she was the one who made that mistake.

“Seven years. That question was asked seven years ago, Jeannie.”

“I know stupid.” She said silently, holding her cup between her hands. The conversation started so nice and now she is getting that stuck feeling in her stomach.

“Hey! Cheer up, it was in the past!” Nick tried to light up the mood with a smile, but she could recognize his fake smiles and hurting heart.

“I have to go, Nick! I have this meeting, I can’t be late.”

“How come so sudden? I am sorry if I upset you, it wasn’t my intention.”

“I know Nick, I know. But I really have to catch a taxi for that meeting. Can’t leave the client waiting.”

“Don’t complain.”

“How do you mean?”

“You have one, I have hundreds. Rage of one client can be taken, but if I am late, I would have passengers waiting to lynch me.” He managed to make her laugh even in this awkward situation. She realized it was something she was missing all those years, his stupidity and him making jokes. Too much heavy history was between them to pretend there are no hurting hearts.

“I have to go, Nick! I am really sorry.”

“Don’t worry about it.” He touched her hand, calming her instantly like only he knows how. From her, he took the bag and they were on the way to exit the airport. The air was fresh outside, but not cold. Noon already passed having people coming in and out of the terminal building, going their way. She waved to the first oncoming taxi, making him stop on the side.

“To downtown, please.” She said opening the back door.

“No problem, mam.” She put her coat in the car and handed bag from Nick. At the opened door there she was still standing. In her own struggle, she didn’t know whether ask him a phone number or not. They haven’t spoken a word all the way since they left the coffee shop.

She gave him a long look, full of sadness and understanding of the current situation they were in. So much history and bright future that never happened between them.

“Jeannie.”

“Yes?”

“The question still stands open.” There was a tear in his eye. “I always had, I still do, and…I will always love you. I am a bird without wings. Come with me, and make me fly again. Be my wings, honey.”

She started crying. Tears coming down without control, but still standing firmly next to the car. She turned away from him, making his heart sank to the bottom, but she just took out her coat and bag, closed the door and put things on the ground. She stepped closer, hugged him strongly, giving him so long desired kiss.

The question finally got its answer.
