âI tried, but I couldnât find you. You didnât exactly leave a number or forwarding address,â Ann said angrily.
âWell you obviously didnât try hard enough,â Brandon accused. He knew that probably wasnât true. He hadnât wanted to be found. He was mad at himself, granted, but he still took his anger out on Ann.
âYou bastard,â Ann said looking up at him, âwhat the hell gives you the right to come back here after six damn years and accuse me of a damn thing.â
âMommy,â Mackenzie said walking up at the worst moment. âWatch your language, and you leave my mommy alone.â Mackenzie stomped on Brandonâs foot and grabbed Annâs hand trying to pull her to another booth.
âMackenzie!â Ann said trying not to laugh. âWe donât hurt people.â
âBut he upset you.â
âWe still donât hurt people,â Ann said getting down to eye level with her daughter. âNow apologize.â
âIâm sorry youâre a jerk,â Mackenzie said, and Ann couldnât help it she laughed then.
Brandon didnât know whether to laugh or cry. His daughter, that he hadnât even known he had just tried to break his foot and called him a jerk. He settled for a laugh, but shot Ann a pained look.
At the look on Brandonâs face Ann stopped laughing. âMackenzie, thatâs not an apology. Now you give a real apology or weâre going to leave right now,â Ann said sternly. Mackenzie looked at her mom and huffed out a breath. She looked back at Brandon and said, âIâm sorry I stomped on your foot and was rude.â Mackenzie turned back to her mom and said, âNow can we stay, please.â
âYeah,â Ann said as she stood back up.
âI think Iâm going to go on home. It might not be such a great idea for me to hang around right now, but will you call me?â Brandon said to Ann.
âYeah,â Ann said sighing, âGive me your number.â Brandon rattle off his number for Ann to program into her phone. Then he got down to eye level with Mackenzie and said, âIâm sorry I upset your momma and you. Friends?â he said holding out his hand. âMaybe,â Makenzie said looking at him doubtfully. âYouâre a hard nut to crack, arenât you? Just like your momma.â
âMomma says I get that from my dad, but I wouldnât know Iâve never met him,â Mackenzie said simply. âNow can we go play some more games,â she said looking back up at her mom.
Ann looked down at Brandon and saw the distraught look on his face. She couldnât help, but feel sorry for him. It wasnât really his fault that he hadnât been a part of their daughterâs life. He hadnât know she existed. âYou sure you donât want to stay a little longer?â Ann asked him.
âAre you sure thatâs okay?â Brandon asked.
âYeah, itâs fine,â Ann said.
âOkay, so stay,â Mackenzie said exasperated, âNo letâs go play some games.â
Chapter Two
Ann woke up at six oâclock Saturday morning feeling hung over without having drank a drop the night before. âIt was just a dream. Why couldnât it just be a dream?â Ann thought as she got out of bed. âIâve finally gotten okay with being a single mom. Iâve finally gotten to where I donât wish for him to come back every day, and now that Iâm not waiting around for him, now that Iâm okay with it all, now that I know I can do it on my own, he shows up.â
Ann went into the kitchen and put on some coffee. She sat down at the table and just put her head in her hands. âHow am I going to tell Mackenzie that the guy she met at the fair is her father? Should I tell her heâs her father? If he doesnât plan on sticking around and being a part of her life Iâm not. Iâm not going to put her through that. Heâs not going to leave her heart broken like he did me.â
âMommy,â Mackenzie said breaking Ann from her thoughts. âMorninâ sweetie,â Ann said looking up to the door way where her beautiful daughter stood. âShe looks so much like him.â
âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine baby. Just didnât sleep well last night. Probably the fair food,â Ann said getting up to fix her first cup of coffee. âYou want some juice?â
âYes, apple please,â Mackenzie said walking into the kitchen and sitting down at the table. âCan we go to Lynnâs for breakfast? I want waffles.â
âYeah, we can go to Lynnâs,â Ann said smiling as she came back to the table with her coffee and Mackenzieâs juice.
âThanks,â Mackenzie said and took a sip of her juice. âI donât like that Brandon guy.â
âWhy? I thought yâall were getting along by the end of the night.â
âWell it was nice of him to buy me all of that stuff, but he was mean to you. I hope we donât see him again.â
âOh baby, donât dislike him just because I got into an argument with him,â Ann said. âYouâll find you have plenty of other reasons to dislike him soon enough,â Ann thought. Instead she said, âPeople argue sometimes. Itâs no big deal. Do you dislike me just because we argue sometimes? Or do you dislike Uncle Jay when me and him argue?â
âNo,â Mackenzie said, âbut thatâs different.â
âAnd how is that different?â
âBecause I love you and Uncle Jay. I donât even know this guy.â
âWell, how about you get to know him before you decide you dislike him.â
âI guess. Are we goinâ to be seeinâ him again?â Mackenzie asked not looking too pleased. âOh you are so much like him,â Ann thought smiling, âTwo peas in a pod.â âI donât know, maybe.â
âOkay.â
They sat there for a few minutes in silence. âWell, if you want to go to Lynnâs for breakfast you better go get dressed,â Ann said looking at Mackenzie.
âOkay!â Mackenzie said hopping up from the table.
Brandon woke up early the next morning and realized he still didnât have power. âDuh dummy,â he thought as he tried to turn the light on in the kitchen to make coffee. âThey said they would be here around ten this morning, and I donât have any coffee either.â Brandon stomped back upstairs to get dressed so he could go get his very necessary morning coffee. âI wonder if Lynnâs Dinner is still open. Hope so,â he thought as he got dressed.
As he walked out the front door headed to his car, the events of the night before hit him. âOh damn, I have a daughter,â he thought trying to take a steadying breath. âAnd she already doesnât like me, but man is she a little spit fire.â He laughed at that thought. She sure showed him last night. You donât mess with her momma or sheâll hurt you, and you have to twist her arm to get her to apologize for it. He couldnât help but grin at her antics from the night before. No matter how much stuff he bought her she never gave in. âAnd sheâs so smart. I mean how many five year olds know who Shakespeare is. That she gets from Ann. Ann was always smart.â
Brandon pulled up at Lynnâs ten minutes later and was happy to see it was still open and not packed yet. He looked at his watch and thought, âNo wonder nobodyâs up at seven on a Saturday morning. Why am I?â He walked in and took a seat at the counter. âOh my goodness, is that really you?â the woman behind the counter said as soon as she saw him. Miss Pam the owner and everyone in townâs favorite entrepreneur still looked the same, maybe a few more wrinkles than he remembered, and was that a gray in her red hair, but other than that she was still the same, short and skinny. âYes maâam, Miss Pam,â Brandon said smiling.
âWell hot damn, I canât believe it. I didnât think you would ever come back around here, but Iâm glad you did,â she said as she came around the counter to give him a hug. âSo, the usual.â
âYes maâam and a cup of coffee, black,â Brandon replied. Miss Pam had always had the best waffles in town.
A few minutes later just as Miss Pam was sitting his plate in front of him he heard the bell over the door ring, and the look on Miss Pamâs face told him who it was, Ann and Mackenzie. He turned around and looked at his daughter and her mother. He smiled and said, âGood morning ladies. Yâall must be here for Miss Pamâs famous waffles. Still the best in town.â
âMorninâ Brandon,â Ann said politely, âAnd yes Mac here wanted waffles this morning, and ever since she had Pamâs she wonât eat mine.â Mackenzie just stood there looking at him for a second then she walked up to him and said, âI donât like you, but Momma said I should get to know you first. So (long suffering sigh) I guess you should eat breakfast with us.â With that Mackenzie walked off to their usually booth.
Brandon looked up at Ann and saw she was trying hard not to laugh, and he heard Pam behind him not doing such a good job of hiding her laughter. âWell then, I guess Iâm having breakfast with yâall. Maybe I can redeem myself,â Brandon said getting up and grabbing his plate and cup of coffee. âGood luck with that,â Pam said smiling, âShe stayed mad at Jay for two months once because he missed her dance recital.â
âOuch, she holds a grudge huh?â Brandon said looking back at Ann.
âWell, sometimes. I think she gets it from her father,â Ann said heading back to the table.
âAh now Iâm not so sure about that,â Brandon replied.
âOh, are you saying she gets it from me?â Ann stopped and looked at him.
âUmm, no. Iâm not sure where she gets it from.â
âUh huh,â Ann said and went to sit down with her daughter.
âCrap,â Mackenzie said when Brandon sat down beside her in the booth. âWhat?â Brandon asked. âNothing,â Mackenzie said as Pam brought her an orange juice and Ann a cup of coffee. âYâallâs food will be out in a sec. So how was the fair last night?â Pam asked Mackenzie.
âGreat I got to ride the Ferris wheel twice, and won a lot of prizes,â Mackenzie said happily.
âYou got to ride the Ferris wheel twice?â Pam asked and looked at Ann with an eyebrow raised.
âYeah, I know she can talk me into anything, and no I didnât pass out or take a nerve pill beforehand,â Ann said. Pam just laughed and patted her on the shoulder before she headed back to the counter.
âSo, whatâs your favorite color?â Mackenzie asked Brandon sounding bored.
âRed,â Brandon answered, âWhatâs yours?â
âYellow.â
âMakenzie, what have I told you about lying?â
âIâm not lying. I changed it to yellow just now.â Brandon tried hard not to laugh. âSo what was it before yellow?â
âRed.â
âOkay,â Brandon said grinning. Ann just rolled her eyes at the both of them. They were so much alike, it killed her.
Pam brought over Annâs omelet and Mackenzieâs waffles with a grin on her face. She had obviously been listening to their conversation. âEnjoy,â she said setting their food down, and headed back to her spot behind the counter.
âMommy, what time
