âOh my gods Silver. What happened? How did you get hurt? She said worriedly.
âIts nothing so serious mom. I justâŠit was just an accident .I fell over the thorny bushes and got woundedâ I tried to explain.
âAunty you need not worry. She fell on a thorny bush as she said. She would be all right in a few daysâ
I looked and saw Steve standing behind me. I didnât know when he came into the house.
Mom eyed at Steve.
âMom erâŠthis is Steve. HeâŠhe helped me when I got hurt. He helped me a lot. He is my new friend,â I said slowly.
âMom looked at me and then at me and then at Steve.â very well Steve. Thank you for helping my daughter. But Silver you have got to tell me everything that happened and you need to apply some medicine on those cuts or else it will get worse.â
I could see that Steve understood that he should leave now.
âWell goodnight aunty and good night Silver. See you laterâ, saying, that he went away.
Somehow I explained the incident to mom. She was tensed and warned me to be careful next time.
Chapter: 4
I woke up at 8 in the morning moved my hand and felt a piercing pain. The wound was swollen and pretty bad in shape. I got up and walked carefully not to hurt my wounded toe.
There was a knock at the door. I opened. Mom was standing there smiling at me.
âSilver. Your friend has come to visit youâ
âFriend?â I looked at her questioningly.
âSteve has comeâ she replied.â he is in the living roomâ
âSteve? Well, ok I am coming downâ
As I came down I saw Steve sitting on the couch and turning the pages of a magazine. When I came he looked up. He had a decent smile on his face.
âHow are you Silver?â
âI am fineâ
âSilverâ my mom saidâ itâs already eight you see. I need to go to the hospital now. I canât afford to be late. Steve here can stay with you for a while and both of you can chat but for godâs sake be careful and donât hurt yourself againâ
âYeah momâ I answered and saw mom starting the car. After bidding her goodbye I came inside. Steve was still sitting on the couch.
âHow is the cut?â he asked again.
âItâs okay. Though it hurts a little but I am felling quiet all right now. Anyway thanks for helping me yesterdayâ
âYou are welcome. Are you busy now?â
âNo not much. I have completed half of my home works and I am free today. What about you? Are you busy today Steve?â
âNo .I am not busy at allâ Steve shook his head.
âThatâs good .so we can chat for a while. Tell me about yourself Steve. I barely know anything about youâ
I could again feel that Steve was very vague and uncertain about what he said regarding himself. The gist was that he lived at the Tarkington road with his parents. His father worked at the bank as an accountant and his mother was a teacher, he didnât have any brother or sister. He was a single child of his of his parents and he was new in this place. He had shifted here recently. But the thing that both of us had in common were that we loved reading books. Our conversation started with books and then it went on to our likes and dislikes and many other things .I told Steve about my college and I could see that he was pretty good at studies. Although, as he came recently he havenât still got admitted n any college but would be getting enrolled after the vacations are over.
It was already noon. Steve went home and I ate my lunch that mom had left for me. After that I took a little nap as mom instructed me to do because she felt a little rest would help me get well soon.
It was 5 in the evening when my sleep was interrupted by the doorbell.
I got up hurriedly and opened the door.
Steve was standing with a bunch of orchids and a âget well soonâ card.
âWow orchids! I exclaimed.â they are my favorite. How did you know I liked orchids?â
Steve grinned at meâ I like to know things about people and when they donât tell me I find out about them myselfâ
I couldnât help smiling too.
âCome inâ
âNo Silver I have a plan. If you are not tired why donât you come out with me for a walk? You need some fresh air and your ankles need to have some exercise or else they will get stiff. So what about it?â
âOkay. Just give me a minute. I will get readyâ
After few minutes we found ourselves walking down the road towards the valley near the hills also known as the âflora valleyâ. The surroundings were beautiful. There was a lush of green everywhere. I came to this place many a time when I was a child with mom and dad. But now as they are busy all the time I seldom get the chance to come her with them.
But I felt glad to get the opportunity to visit this place again.
âIsnât it beautiful?â I asked Steve.
âYeah it is beautiful but not the best,â replied Steve.
âNot the best? Why, I fell it âs just like heavenâ
âMay be its heaven but it is not the most beautiful thing I have seenâ
âNow why is that Steve? What could be more beautiful than this place?â
Steve stared back at me. His big blue eyes fixed on me.â causeâ he said slowlyâ I can see someone more beautiful and angelic than anything in this world standing just before meâ
I didnât expect hi to say that. I never cared about fashion or looks and I always prefer to dress casually. I tried to smileâ donât flatter me Steveâ
âI am not flattering you Silver. I told you what seemed true to me. Now it depends on you to decide which one to believeâ saying that he abruptly turned away from me.
Something in his voice told me that he meant what he had said. I returned home at seven. Steve left me after seeing that I got to my home safely and bade me goodbye. He asked me whether I would like to come with him to the library the next evening. I said yes. Although I didnât know why .I am not that friendly with anyone but I always feel so free and comfortable with Steve. But something told me that I was going to find that reason out very soon.
âSo how was your day today, Silver?â asked mom as we were eating our dinner.
âGood .in fact very goodâ I said munching away a sandwich.
âWhen did Steve go?â she winked at me.
âWe went for a walk during the evening and after that he went awayâ I tried to reply casually.â mom, I am felling very sleepy can I go to bed now?â
âYes dear. Goodnight and have sweet dreams.â
I gave my goodnight kiss to mom and climbed upstairs. My eyes were drooping .I think the walk had made me tired. I went straight to my bed and fell asleep.
âBeep! Beep! Beep! â I woke up with a start. It was my cell phone. I looked at my watch .it was already 9.i had been sleeping so long! Oh my god. Surely mom had now already left for hospital. Keeping these thoughts aside I picked up my cell phone.
The call was from an unknown number.
âHelloâ I answered the call uncertainly.
âGood morning!â said the voice at the other end. And instantly I knew who the person was.
âSteve! How did you get my cell number?â
âDidnât I tell you Silver that when people donât tell me about themselves I find out about them.â
âBut my cell number? How did you manage to get it?â
âThatâs my little secretâ Steve teased me.â but tell me Silver how are you today?â
âI am fine. I just got up now. I woke up very late todayâ
âWell I hope you were tired after yesterdayâs walk. Were you?â
âNot really but I felt pretty sleepy.â I said.
âSo are you coming today at the library?â
âYeah I am.â
âWell them see you there and take care Silverâ
âGood byeâ I said.
I heard a click at the other end. I put down my cell phone. I ate my breakfast which mom had kept for me. After that I sat down and started to study. I was pretty surprised that Steve called me up. How did he get my number? Only two of my classmates knew my number and itâs very unlikely that they would meet Steve and gives him my number. Moreover another thought puzzled me. The day before yesterday when I got myself scratched Steve cam to my rescue very surprisingly. Steve gave an excuse of visiting a friend. But Steve had told me that he was new here. How could he make friends so fast and that to the other day he told he feels lonely all the time. Thatâs why he visited the library for the first time that day. Was he following me? I twisted and turned every neuron and brain cell but all my effort went in vain. I again concentrated on my studies.
Oh she is marvelous thought Steve as he put down his cell phone. Steve has never been so friendly with anyone as he was with Silver. He pictured Silver in his mind .her long black hair fell over her shoulder. Her lips were scarlet and how could he miss those big dazzling eyes of hers, which had a tinge of Silver color that made them sparkle. She was different he thought, she was different from any other girl that he had met (he was not interested in girls generally). He was waiting badly to go to the library and meet her.
Chapter: 5
I went into the big hall having those racks fully stacked with books. I had just picked one when I hard Steveâs voice behind me.
âPride and Prejudice? Have you read it earlier?â
I spun around and saw Steve smiling at me.
âNo never. I donât read much romantic novels. I mainly read thrillers.â
âSo are you trying this for a change?â
âYeah you can say that. Have you read it?â
Steve noddedâ I read it few months ago. Itâs a beautiful story. Like you I am also a voracious reader of thrillers but one of my friend suggested me to read the book. I found it quiet an exciting one. I mean I never thought that love had such a beautiful meaning.â
âTell me what did you find out after reading this book?â I asked we sat down on one of the benches.
âI didnât learn a lot,â he saidâ but I understood something about relationships. I mean, the bonding between two people. Love is something very pure and essential for oneâs existence. Itâs required, you see cause you live for a person you love. Thatâs what inspires you to continue your life. Love is the understanding between two people, how much they know about each other. Thatâs the whole thing behind the word called âloveâ.â
Steve blinked at me.
I had been listening him throughout and what he said was so true that I became dazed.
âThatâs it? I mean the whole thing you came to know after reading the book?â
âYupâ
âYou expressed it in a brilliant manners,
