“We hang out there every night. Could you at least ask? I’d like to go with them.” He continued to urge her.
“I’m sure my parents won’t let me. Besides, I have to work tomorrow. Uncle Reggie needs me to help with lunch. If I stay out late, I won’t feel like working.”
“Ok, I’m going. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“My mom is taking me shopping for school clothes tomorrow after work. Do you want to come along?”
“I’ll let you know.” He turned, walking away with Zack and Molly.
Carrie got on her scooter, started it up, and rode home, broken hearted because Toby left her alone on her birthday. Oh well!
“Is that you Carrie?” Her mother called from the kitchen.
“Yes mom, it’s me. Thanks for cleaning up after the party.”
“Why are you home so early? I thought you’d hang out with your friends until eleven as you usually do.”
“I want to get to bed early.” She lied, going into her bedroom and locking the door. When her mother knocked a while later, she pretended to be asleep.
The following morning, Carrie rose, dressed in her work uniform, khaki shorts and white T-shirt, and headed downstairs to the kitchen.
“Is Dad already gone to work?” she asked, taking a bite out of a piece of toast.
“Yes, he left early. Reggie needed him to run an errand. Remember I’m picking you up at three to go shopping.”
“Yes Mom, I have a list of things I need for school.” She finished the toast, downed a glass of orange juice, and rushed out the door.
