âMonths?â Piper repeated.
Of course. This had been in the works long before she and Aiden had ever met. She recalled when sheâd asked about his mysterious advanced deadline. Youâll find out soon enough. Those cryptic words, the look on his face. He was smug. He was pleased with himself.
If it really was true, if Aiden had been planning to tear down the center while romancing her all along, then he was laughing at her. She was a joke to him. And so was everything she cared about. A big joke.
She covered her face with her hands. She felt screwed overâin more ways than one.
âIâm going to kill him,â she said, although the lack of enthusiasm in her voice made it sound more like âI want to die.â
âHey You!â Holly snapped her fingers. âAre you getting this? Premeditated. âMurder oneâ kind of stuff. Zoom in.â
Piper sank to the ground, barely noticing the camera frantically filming shots from every angle. Zoe reached out and hissed something in Hey Youâs ear that made his face go slack. He slowly lowered the camera.
âWhy would Aiden do this?â Piper asked. âWhy would he keep this from me?â
Holly snorted. âProbably so he didnât have to see that look on your face. Not exactly a turn-on when heâs trying to get you into bed. Am I right?â She began making suggestive sex faces. âDid you get a little carnal action? Give in to your animal instincts? Maybe even a little âdoggy-styleâ?â She giggled like they were on a girlsâ night outâexcept for Hey You eyeing Zoe while he held his camera protectively in front of his crotch.
Addison cringed. âAt least he didnât get the satisfaction.â When Piper looked up guiltily, she gasped and covered her mouth. âDid he?â
Piper winced but didnât answer. âLook. There has to be some other explanation for this.â
Holly attempted to fix her hair using a compact mirror. âExplanation or excuse? Ever wonder why a rich boy like him didnât whip out the old checkbook to help the center after the first two incidents? Especially if he was trying to get in your pants?â
âHe did.â She avoided Addisonâs and Zoeâs stares. âBut I wouldnât accept it.â
âAccept it?â Holly scoffed. âHe owns the building. If he wanted to make improvements, why wouldnât he just do it?â
Piper had never thought much about it at the time because sheâd been so determined to fix things on her own. But he owned the building, after all. Of course, it would have made sense for him to upgrade the center and make repairs if needed. And it wasnât like he was a cheapskate or anything. Piper thought of the new upgrades to her car.
âBecause he didnât want to mix business with pleasure?â It didnât even sound right to her own ears, but she didnât know what was right anymore.
âOh, it was business all right.â Holly winked. âAnd sounds like he got the pleasure part too.â
Piper banged her fist on the ground, ready to deny the reporterâs accusations. But even as she wanted to stick up for Aiden, negative thoughts crept into her brain, like how stupid sheâd been. A rich, hot CEO interested in her? A telegram singer?
She thought back to his history, his life story as told by the tabloids, and developed even more doubts. It was too good to be true, and sheâd even known it the day heâd offered her the job. She wished sheâd applied at McDonaldâs after all.
The last couple of weeks with him montaged through her mind, how he made her feel, his lips on hers, the way he held her when he thought she was in danger, and how he instinctually wanted to take care of herâas annoying as it was sometimes. She mentally slapped herself for even suspecting that he was guilty of anything. Her instincts told her this was all wrong. Aiden just couldnât ⊠He wouldnât.
Jumping to her feet, Piper grabbed her backpack and headed for the gate. Colin trotted next to her all the way back to the parking lot like a faithful sidekickâwell, she was probably more the sidekick. But this time, she was the one who was going to kick some bad guy butt. Or maybe that was the Supergirl costume talking.
âWait!â Holly stumbled after her. âWhere are you going?â
âTo talk to Aiden,â she said. âItâs the only way to get some real answers.â
âDo you think thatâs safe?â Zoe asked.
This brought her up short. She stopped walking and spun around. âSafe? Why wouldnât it be?â
âWell, what if itâs true?â Zoe gave a small cringe to apologize for being the devilâsâaka Hollyâsâadvocate. âWhat if Aiden is somehow involved in all this?â
Piper didnât want to think about it. Sheâd entertained Hollyâs conspiracy theories enough for one day. âIâm going.â
âWait!â Addison cried, grabbing Zoe and locking the gate. âWeâre coming too.â
Holly looked like she was about to have a fit from all the excitement. âOoh, confrontation.â
Zoe held up a hand. âNot you, Jerry Springer.â
âWeâll take my car!â Addison unlocked her Mini Convertible with the remote.
The soft top was down, and Piper controlled the urge to slide over the hood and flip herself into the car. Instead, she opened the passenger door, threw her bag on the other seat, and scrambled into the back with Colin. She wanted to get away from Holly and her questions as soon as possible. Questions that made her uncomfortable. Yes, they sounded like conspiracy theories, but they were starting to make sense.
Piper gripped her knees, digging her nails into her bare skin as Addison and Zoe got in and buckled up. Not soon enough, the little four-seater pulled out of the parking space, kicking up gravel that ricocheted off the new sign. Piperâs short red cape sticking out of her jacket caught the wind and flowed out behind them as they flew off.
The last thing she heard Holly yell as she ran after the car was, âI get the exclusive, right?â
Addisonâs blue eyes flicked to Piperâs reflection in the rearview mirror. She gave her a confident weâll-get-you-to-the-ball-Cinderella look. âIâm sure this is all a giant misunderstanding.â
Piper held Colin close. âI hope so.â
Zoe remained silent, staring out the passenger window, but Piper could see her expression in the side mirror. It didnât look like she agreed with Addisonâs point of view, but she kept her mouth shut, now and then throwing worried glances at Piper.
Addison cranked the wheel, tires squealing. âHe cares about you, Piper. Anyone can see that. Heâs your Noah.â
âHer what?â Zoe asked. âOh, I get it. As in Noahâs Ark, right? A reference to their two dachshunds?â
âAs in Noah from The Notebook. You guys are soul mates, Piper.â
âI thought he was my Richard Gere.â
Addison took the next corner like they were in a high-speed chase. âNo, heâs much more than that.â
He was. At least, Piper had thought he was. But Hollyâs words chased her all the way to the Financial District. No matter how fast the Mini went, she couldnât outrun them.
She didnât want to believe it. Aiden was no attempted murderer or cold-blooded businessman. But facts were facts: He was trying to destroy her beloved center, to take away the home of her friends.
Over my dead body, she thought. She just hoped that wasnât a real possibility.
The Mini Convertible whipped into the underground parking beneath Aidenâs office building. Piperâs heart began leapfrogging in her chest. She wasnât sure how it could still beat so fast and break into a million pieces at the same time. Aiden knew what the rescue center meant to her, yet heâd planned on taking it away from her.
No, she told herself. There has to be another explanation. Holly was trying to get a rise out of her again. Nothing more.
Addison pulled into a visitor-parking space and killed the engine. She turned around and gave Piper a hopeful look. âHere we are.â
âThanks for the lift,â Piper said. âI wonât be long. I promise.â
Zoe spun around in her seat. âOh, no. Youâre not going in without us.â
âYeah, weâre your reinforcements,â Addison said.
Piper smiled, grateful for the support. âThis is Aidenâs office weâre talking about. Not Fort Knox. Iâll be fine.â She rearranged her raincoat to make sure it hid her costume. While Supergirl would be a formidable look, Piper had no powers to speak of ⊠well, besides the ability to make menâs pants grow tighter.
Zoe gnawed at her lip. âUnless, of course, Aiden really is involved in all of this. And Iâm not saying he is.â She threw her hands up. âIâm just saying that this person, whoever they are, tried to kill you twice now. Thereâs a connection, and I donât want to see anything happen to you.â
âBut to be fair,â Addison
