As her senses started to kick in, she noticed a harsh, strong grip on both her ankles and wrists, holding her in place. Ever so slowly, she tugged on one of the restraints at her wrists, testing it. The rope didnât allow much, and she ended up getting nowhere, giving up.
It was no use. She was trapped. Like a bird in a cage. Helpless.
Stifling a sob, she lay still, thinking about how sheâd managed to get herself into this mess in the first place. Sheâd called Rachel, found out Johnny had taken her, agreed to meet him, and rushed to her best friendâs aid, only to be caught in a sick manâs game. Heâd wanted her all along, and despite the part of her that had been prepared for this momentâprepared to face Johnny and her own fearsâshe began to break down under the circumstances.
Could there really be any hope for her? She was not only bound and lost, but also utterly terrified and helpless. What good could she do to save herself now? She was too weakâtoo exhausted. Nothing seemed to be on her side.
A small clicking sound rang in her ears, snapping her from her state of mind. She froze, her body on sudden high alert. Her heart began thudding inside her chest; anxiety pulsed through her veins. She swallowed, closed her eyes, waiting for something to happen. Waiting for Johnny.
And all too soon, there was a soft thud of the door hitting the wall, and a shuffle of feet, giving Johnnyâs presence away in an instant. She could sense
him watching her, hear
his steady breathing, and feel
his presence like an awful frost-bite on her subconscious, chilling her to the core.
âYouâre awake,â he said, sighing. âFinally
. I was starting to worry Iâd drugged you too much.â He shut the door, taking his time. âItâs been over an hour, in case youâre wondering. Rachel should be waking up soon, too.â
Slowly, she braved opening her eyes, careful to avoid his gaze. âYouâre not worried sheâll call for help?â Her stomach dropped at the horrifying memory of Rachelâs abused body. âYou must know sheâll try.â
âIâm aware,â he said, almost pleasantly. âIn factâIâm looking forward to it. See, the thing is, even if she gets the authorities involved it wonât stop me. It wonât stop us
from being together, like we should be.â
She choked on the bile in her throat, utterly disgusted. No
, she replied silently, too shaken to speak aloud. It will. Youâre never going to get away with this, Johnny. Iâll never be with you.
He smiledâa sick, repulsive twitch of the lips. âIf you have something to say, Princess, just say it.â
She turned her face towards him, glaring, and shook her head. âI have nothing to say to you.â
âAw, donât be like that, sweetheart,â he crooned, stepping towards her. âYouâll learn to enjoy my company, soon. Everything will be just fine. You just have to remember to listen to me, okay?â
âYouâve taken everything I love away from me,â she snapped, voice cracking. She fought back the tears that threatened to leak. âNothing will ever be âjust fineâ
again. And youâre kidding yourself if you think Iâll ever
enjoy your company. I canât stand being around you. You make me sick
.â
âNow weâre getting somewhere.â He smirked, reaching out to catch a lock of her hair in his fingers. âI like it when youâre honest with me, Princess, but I canât have you running your mouth like that, either. And if you want to keep your âinnocenceâ intact, I suggest you start keeping some of your thoughts to yourself. Things will go better for you if you donât fight whatâs going to happen.â
Stricken with an aggressive surge of fear, Skye recoiled, pulling herself as far away from Johnny as she possibly could with her restrictions. âWhat do you want from me, Johnny?â Her voice was small and weak, showing fear she wanted so desperately to hide. âWhy are you doing this?â
He leaned in, cupped her face in his hands, and pressed their foreheads together, sighing. âI just want you
, Skylar. Iâve always wanted you.â He brushed his lips over hers, inhaling. âEverything Iâve done has been for you.â
She whimpered, blinking back tears. âNo, stopââ
âShh, donât worry, Princessâitâs okay. Iâm not going to hurt you.â
âPleaseââ she croaked, trying to pull away. âDonât.â Bitter sobs shook her body as Johnny pressed his lips against hers and kissed her, invading a boundary she wished he hadnât. She had to fight the urge to gag, repulsed by Johnnyâs sick tongue probing its way into her mouth. Her stomach lurched at his taste, so bitter, so vile
, she could hardly bear it.
When he finally pulled his lips away, Skye gasped for air, choking on the aftermath of his aggression. âJohnny,â she whispered, mentally slapping herself for how weak and insecure she was being. âPleaseâdonât touch me. Not like that.â
He frowned, gave his head a little shake. âIâm sorry, Skyeâbut Iâve wanted to be with you for so long. Itâs not easy for me to hold myself back, especially with you right here, so close to me.â He pushed himself onto the bed, placing himself above her. âAnd besides, itâs not like youâve been very respectful to me in the past. Things could be much worse; I could be making you do things youâre not ready for, or hurting youâbut Iâm not. Iâm being merciful, instead.â He nuzzled his face in the crook of her neck, breathing heavy. âYou should be grateful.â
She shivered, feeling his teeth graze her soft, tender skin. âI-I am grateful,â she lied. It wasnât entirely a lie though; she was
grateful he hadnât made her do anything she wasnât ready forâthis time. But then again, heâd already abused her too many times for her to trust that heâd really be able to hold himself back if the time came. âI-Iâm sorryâI guess Iâm just afraid.â She swallowed hard, biting back what she really wanted to say. She had to be strong now; she had to fight for her own freedom. And maybeâif she told Johnny what he wanted to hearâsheâd have a chance at winning this battle.
It was the only hope she had left.
âItâs okay, Princess. I know this is all must be very strange for you.â He nipped at a soft spot, pressed his lips against the skin. âBut everything will be okay. I promise.â
She closed her eyes, fighting the urge to cry out. His touch created an overwhelming feeling of disgust, making her skin crawl. âCan I ask you something?â
He smiled against her skin. âAnything.â
Her heart was pounding, but she tried to calm herself down, too afraid that if she didnât keep herself together sheâd later regret it. She had no choice but to fake trust in him. âWhy?â Her voice wavered, and she cleared her throat. âWhy do you want me so badly? Why do all of this just . . . to have me
?â
He hesitated, lips parting from her skin. His breath was warm and heavy on her skin when he let out a long breath, before saying, ever so softly, âBecause youâre just like her.â
Her eyes flashed open; body went rigidâsuddenly wide awake. Her? She tried to wrap her mind around what heâd just told her, perplexed by the deep sorrow sheâd heard in his voice. Could there have been another girl? A girl like me?
âWho was she?â she managed, finding her voice. âWhat happened to her?â
âScarlett,â he said, quietly. âScarlett Newmanâthe first girl I ever loved.â Skye could feel his body shaking around hers, just barely, as he propped himself up, hands on either side of her head. His stricken gaze bore into hers, so raw, so torn, so vulnerable
, it was like nothing sheâd ever seen from him before. âI was going to propose for her hand in marriage, but before I could, she was taken from me.â
âTaken?â she asked, genuinely intrigued. âWhat happened, Johnny?â
âHe
killed her,â he spat, brows furrowing in disgust. âHe had no shame, no remorse. He was just a soulless monster that ruined my life.â
âWho?â
âMy father.â His voice was laced with disdain. âHe didnât care about anyone but himself. After years of abusing his familyâme, my mother, and sisterâhe eventually broke down completely and told me I had to help him get rid of them, or heâd kill me too. He made me watch as he took their livesâand Scarlettâsâbefore taking his own life and leaving me with no one. Heâd always hated me. But heâd also always wanted me to be like him.â He sighed, ran his hand through his hair, and sat up, straddling Skyeâs waist. âI guess in a way, he got what he wanted.â
âNoâhe didnât.â Subtly, she tested the bonds again, searching for some way of escape. When they didnât budge, she focused all her attention on Johnny. âYou donât have to be like him, Johnny. You can be differentâbetter
âthan he was. You can change.â
âSo you agree, then?â His hands ventured down to her waist, and then lazily crawled upwards. She stifled a gasp, the feel of his hands sending the darkest of memories to her mind. âIâve turned into him.â
She froze for a moment before shaking her head, taken aback. âNoâyou havenâtâIââ
He bent down, leaned in. âJust admit it, Skylarâyouâre afraid of me. Youâre afraid of the kinds of feelings I have towards you. But waitâitâs more than that. Youâre not only afraid, but also disgusted
with me. I meanâdonât get me wrongâI canât really blame you. Iâve done some pretty awful things to you and
your loved ones. But the problem is, Iâve done it all for
you
. Youâre just so much
like her, and I canât help but want you.â His hands reached the top button of her blouse and stopped, hesitating, and at the same time, he brought his lips against her ear, whispering, âYouâre special, Princessâno one can say otherwise. But youâre also mineâand Iâve never been good at sharing.â
The first button came undone. She sucked in a breath, prepared to beg for him to stop, but he pressed a hand on her mouth, silencing her. âDonât. Itâll do you no good. Youâll just have to trust me.â
She tried to shake her head but didnât get anywhere, easily held in place by his hand. Her heartbeat was pounding painfully against her chest, fear and desperation squeezing the life out of her. She pulled on the bonds but it did nothing. She was trapped, vulnerable at Johnnyâs hands.
Another button came undone.
âMaybe I should just take you now,â Johnny said slowly, as if considering it. âMaybe I shouldnât wait for you to be ready.â A muffled whimper was her only response. âMaybe Iâll have a little fun.â He kissed her neck, softly, as his fingers worked to undo another button. âWhat do you think?â
As he removed his hand from her
