That was what Jafarr hated the most. He knew his father was involved in the rebellion. No Zeldar in the history of Arras could stay out of it. Perhaps it was because of their distant relation to Zeldar Tarrn. But more likely, it was their family’s general dislike for corruption coupled with their everlasting desire to make things right. However, it was at his dad’s insistence that Jafarr stay out of the rebellion, the singular wish he had for his son. His father had said it once—‘Someone has to keep clear. Someone has to survive. It won’t be me. It wouldn’t be your mother. It has to be you.’
Closing his eyes and clenching his jaw, Jafarr felt his anger return. He would survive, but he would be a lying roach if he agreed not to fight back.
Taking his clothes, Jafarr dumped them into a chute. He placed his jacket back on the wall and his shoes under the study desk. He yanked on a sleep suit then pressed the alarm button to his clock. The light immediately shut off. Lying down, he slid next to the wall, wrapping the thin thermo knit blanket over his shoulders.
Closing his eyes, clearing his mind of everything that had occurred that day, Jafarr worked towards sleep. The People’s Military officer, the bomb hidden in the light, his father, the groupies, the metro ride, school, missing his friends at the Surface Gate, the Surface Patrol…the surface. He stopped and remembered the surface. The warm sun. The real sun. The red sky and dust storms. It was a real place.
Someday. Someday. Some…
