"Count on Darren Asher to make a comment like that," Jonathan remarked.
Mark nodded.
Zormna laughed. Her voice echoed in the cafeteria and could be heard outside in the snow-covered courtyard. And perhaps Jeff thought that he had heard a laugh as he ate his lunch from the detention hall, wondering if it could possibly be Zormna.
Mr. Brownhalt smacked the beaten ruler he was holding in his hands against the desk which jerked Jeff back into consciousness. "No daydreaming in this class, Mr. Streigle. You have an essay to finish."
Jeff sighed and nodded, putting his pencil back to the paper, thinking.
The purpose of school is to educate the young and the uneducated. Of course, if you were a boy educated on another planet, near genius material that really didn't have to study hard, the educational system here would be considered a joke. I can only imagine how that boy must be feeling right now, stuck in detention for missing a little school, regardless of how perfectly he had finished his homework and how dutifully he had done things before. But what the hey? Forget the truth. Let's just punish people simply because we can, shall we?
Jeff looked at his paper and smiled. That ought to make Mr. Vicksler mad.
