sad whitewashed walls Elsi let me cover with her drawings of the moon and the stars and the galaxy, but it would never be the same.

Suddenly I realized that I was not with Elsi. I was not standing with her among the rubble, picking myself up from beneath charred boards and bones of hot metal. I wanted to run to her; to press my shirt to the deep cut blossoming on her perfect leg, but I couldn’t move. I was frozen and helpless and so very, very lost.

And that’s when I knew.

And as I watched Elsi realize it too, I couldn’t do a thing.

When she saw me, broken and empty on the side of the bed, the girl I had never known life without made a sound I will never forget. It was the sound of someone that has lost everything, the sound you can only make when there is nothing left for you in the world, when everything and everyone you love is lost and suddenly all the world will never, ever be enough. Elsi made that sound and my lifeless heart echoed it back to her, tried to reach out to her and embrace her in the way I knew I never could do again.

Everything was over.

And watching the edges of this terrible picture fade and fold up like paper planes, I didn’t wonder why. I didn’t try to suck the last bit of air out of my burnt lungs; I didn’t try to fight it.

I just sat back on my last tiny piece of the world and watched Elsi lose everything in that one small moment, watched her crumble, and break, and fall to the ground in pieces.

And that was the last time I saw Elsi cry.
