Aver Zormna Clendar was just doing her job--and doing it well.

The People's Military's job is to monitor and regulate the activities of suspicious citizens--and no citizen is more suspricous and dangerous than Jafarr Zeldar. Half-blood son of a rebel lineage, brilliant beyond their records has been able to record--and he has gone missing.

Zormna Clendar was minding her own business while with 'friends' at her favorite eatery known as Sandi's when she happened to see the infamous Jafarr Zeldar pointing her out to presumed rebel cohorts. On instinct she apprehends him--but her lousy luck also draws in none other than the nasty Dural Korad of the People's Military--Zormna and Jafarr's least favorite human being.

In her first postion as a Surface Patrol officer, Zormna is up against Alea Tenngar, the egotistical head of the district who has a chip on his shoulder. He believes that Zormna's presence threatens his position--as she is the most dangerously skilled pilot to endter his district of the Patrol to date.

Jafarr's fifteen birthday came with a surprise. His father has decided they need to leave Arras and go to Earth for their safety. They need to steal a ship from the Alpha District docking bay--which they have successfully done in the past. Problem is, Aver Zormna Clendar is on duty--and she is good at her job.

Zormna is finally off of her military suspension. When Alea Arden comes to pick her up and take her back to the Surface Patrol, he is surpised to see how much she has changed from her experience... in startling ways.

Zormna is at court once more for insubordination--assumed guilty and forced to prove herself innnocent. Unfortunately her record of pranks is against her. And the judges in the Council have a vendetta. At the least, she could lose her position in the Surface Patrol. At worst, she could end up in prison for a crime she did not commit.

After a number of disagreements with the leader of the rebellion, Jafarr is left behind during a supply raid. And while on duty monitoring People's Military communications, he alone discovers a code identifying the raiding party--and marking them for annihilation.

It is not easy growing up in a miliary school orphanage. Harder still if you are a Tarrn. And like in all schools, bullying is a problem. Children are, after all, the most vicious toward one another--especially when the teacher is not looking.

Zormna is snagged along by her friends to watch a Pronuk match in the Surface Gate. But while in there, she is sure she has spotted the guy she had nabbed trying to steal Surface Patrol property weeks ago... and who had escaped under the People's Military's custody.
