ABOUT THIS BOOK
This book is a true accounting of a German family (through the eyes of an 8 year old girl) and their struggle to remain in tact, to survive the destruction of war caused by the bombing of their home, and the city they lived in. It is the story of two women, a grandmother, the mother and two small children.
It tells of the death and destruction of thousands who lived in a city that was completely destroyed by constant bombing by the
British, and finalization of this destruction by creating fire storms with the final blow to the city by the Russian assault and capture of the city.
It tells of their trek across country from Konigsberg East Prussia, to Pillau, and then to Danzig. The strafing by the Russians during this trek and the Russian ground troops and bombers following close behind. It also tells of a sea voyage to Denmark which was continuously followed by Russian submarines.
The story goes on recalling daily life and struggle of four years in a refugee camp, and the subsequent displacement to other camps to reach their final destination of Heilbronn Germany. In addition the story finalizes with the rejoining of the entire family to start a new life together.
