Mike was born in the 1940s, and experienced....  first hand .... the dramatic and revolutionary changes that took place over those several decades (to the 1970s), and being a surfer from the 1950s, pursued,...with great vigour...his passion to experience exotic surf locations, and to have an experience to end all experiences...

However,.... in his exciting pursuit of these new adventures, Mike (and Paula) finds themselves dealing with many, many, unexpected and turbulent situations, that lead us to declare and title this book as,....."The Sahara and Hostile Africa"

Crossing the largest barren and hostile Desert in the world...The Sahara....nearly 50 years ago now...               in a very unorthodox way....or should i say,....vehicle....naturally,.... has it's own complications and dangers, and of course, the unstable world of Central and Southern Africa, also, present unique and scarey challenges of their own during that time.

The whole of Africa,...was going through a turbulent time of independence and anti-Colonialism in the 1960s and early 1970s, and anti-white ill-feeling was commonplace (naturally enough, ....after years of Colonial rule by white minority groups), and as a white couple....that element of aggressive animosity and distrust was always close at hand for an overland travellor during that fragile period in history
