A shower of gravel skittered across my path as I scootered up my driveway with two of my best friends. It was about 11:00 pm at my Christmas party, and we were the only ones outside. It was pitch-black except for the small shard of light the moon provided. Everything in my life was great. I had my friends at my Christmas party, I wasn't fighting with any of them, and I was outside in the cool night air with absolutely no chaos. Like I said, everything was just great, until that one night that changed everything.

"Wha-what is that?" asked Rachel, who was a year younger than me. The usually unaturally stoic 10 year old was truly afraid as she pointed a shaky finger at a figure walking up the road towards us. The blue-white light of a cellphone shined on his face and he stopped for a second to punch some numbers into his phone. It seemed like he was a normal teenager, but there was something odd about him. I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
"Oh, just the teenager down the street." I assured her, really trying more to convince myself than the two younger girls depending on me.
"Cecilia," Jackie said warily, gazing up at me, a look of terror marring her face.
"He-he's following us!" I tried to keep my voice low, but I could not hide the panic in my voice. "Guys, get out Of Here NOW!!!!" I half-yelled.
"He's running!" screeched Rachel.
Jackie, Rach, and I raced down the driveway, dropping our scooters as we reached the stone path to my house. I flung the door open and we practically flew in. I slumped against the wall. We were all wide-eyed and freaked.
"Oh. My. God." were my first words, but I doubted anyone could hear them.
"We-," Jackie started.
"Can't tell anyone." Rachel read her mind, and we all nodded. Yeah right.
We walked up the stairs, still a little freaked, and walked into my room where my friends were playing a board game on my floor. The three of us sat on my bed, and nobody noticed anything odd for a few minutes. Soon enough, Claire (Rachel's older sister who was my age) saw our faces and demanded to know what had happened. The Harris's (triplets: Cindy, Diane, and Grace, who were also my age) and Melissa (who was one of my best friends and also my age) backed her up. Rachel, Jackie, and I huddled.
"We should tell them." protested Jackie.
"But we made a pact." I said, trying to convince myself that this would ever go on unmentioned.
"I know Cecilia," Rachel turned to me, "But now that they know something is up, they'll never let it go."
She was right. Why did I have to have such stubborn friends?
"Okay." I reluctantly gave in. "But they can't tell the parents. Mine would rub the whole stranger danger thing in my face." Rachel and Jackie nodded.
We led my friends into the living room where no one would be there to listen. Rachel explained the whole thing, and they listened, wide-eyed.
"Seriously?" Melissa asked, pale. "Just now?" I nodded my head.
"Call me crazy," I began, "But I'm going back out." Saying that was the biggest mistake of my life.
"So am I." said Rachel, Jackie, and Claire simultaneously. "Let's do it." I had just put everyone in danger.

Half an hour later, the Harris's and Melissa had left and it was just Rachel, Claire, Jackie, and I. We all still wanted to go back outside. We all wanted to impress the others and not be scared. We all were in grave danger.
