It was late February and Ms. M’s grade 4 class had to pick a book to read all by themselves. Poor Kirby had no idea what book she should read.
Kirby went to her teacher and asked, “Ms. M I have no idea what book I should read! Can you help me?” “Of course,” said Ms. M.
Ms. M thought long and hard of how to help Kirby pick out a book. She debated about giving her a long list, or picking out a specific book for her to read. Then she had a great idea…
A BOOK SWAP!!!!
Ms. M let Kirby know her new idea, but Kirby was so confused. “What is a book swap Ms. M?”
“Well Kirby, a book swap is when you and your classmates bring in your favourite books and everyone looks at the different books to see if there is one that they want to read,” stated Ms. M.
“That sounds like lots of fun,” yelled Kirby, “but how does it relate to the curriculum?”
“I love your interest Kirby,” said Ms. M. "Here let me show you!"
“1.1 read a variety of texts from diverse cultures, including literary texts (e.g., myths, plays, short stories, chapter books, letters, diaries, poetry), graphic texts (e.g., graphic novels, diagrams, brochures, graphs and graphic organizers, charts and tables, maps), and informational texts (e.g., textbooks, non-fiction books on a range of topics, print and online newspaper and magazine articles or reviews, print and online ency- clopedias and atlases, electronic texts such as e-mails or lines)”
“Wow! That fits perfectly,” said Kirby. Ms. M also explained to Kirby that a book swap could be changed to allow students to discover different types of texts and forms of texts like poems or newspapers.
The class loved the idea and they were all excited for tomorrow to come!
