Service dogs come in all shapes and sizes. They are more than just seeing eye dogs for the legally blind. They can be trained to open doors, bring you needed items, and even help you navigate walking through the streets. Dogs have also been trained to detect low blood sugar. They are also used for therapy for patients in a lot of hospitals. With protection and companionship also, dogs really are a best friend.
Service dogs are expensive to buy, train, and maintain for good performance, Most people who need these great animals can not afford them. Different breeds of dogs are better than others for different things. A lot of people have allergies also and certain dogs are better for this purpose. Helping needy people with the animals that they need and to also pay for the training of these dogs would be a great cause. This would take a lot of funding and also good organization but a lot of people would benefit from this.
People using wheel chairs have a difficult time with doors in public, especially restroom doors. A properly trained service dog can open these doors using a special harness and would be a tremendous help for people living with disabilities. Being diabetic and having a dog trained to detect blood sugar drops could even save a life. If the government was not always involved in other countries, perhaps we could afford services like this for our own population.
A lot of people with disabilities have a lot of allergies also, one of them being allergic to dogs. A cross between a poodle and a labrador produce a dog of very low allergy problems. There are also other smart and low allergy type dogs also. If you know someone who can benefit from a service dog, let them know what is available. You could help someone become happier and more independent.
When you are out in public, open doors for people, help them up a steep ramp, and even tell them about all the different things these great animals can do. We are all people sharing the same world, so perhaps we can take a little time from our busy days to help others.
