Epigraph

Numbers are beautiful, wild beasts in the fetishists' safari park.

Dr. Olaf Hoffmann

Abstraction is a necessity; fetishism an entertaining luxury of a saturated society.

Marie de Sade

Fetishes – salt in everyday soup or salted everyday life soup‽

Balthasar Maria Bernhard Freiherr von Brockelstedt

Cryptography in everyday life protects our freedom. Those who give up freedom for a little more short-term security will lose both in the long run.

Bertine-Isolde Freifrau von Brockelstedt

The study of mathematics, by suppressing sensitivity and imagination, sometimes leads to a terrible outbreak of passions.

Félix Dupanloup

Mathematics is not detrimental to the love drive.

Paul Julius Möbius

I sometimes have an abysmal hatred of numbers. It is the most absurd falsification of 'reality' that man has ever achieved, and yet it is the basis of 'our whole contemporary world'.

Christian Morgenstern

There are things that seem incredible to most people who have not studied mathematics.

Archimedes

There is no royal road to mathematics.

Euklid

Mathematics alone satisfies the mind by its extraordinary certainty.

Johannes Kepler

In nothing is the lack of mathematical education more evident than in an overly precise calculation.

Carl Friedrich Gauß

It is mathematics that protects us from the delusion of the senses and teaches us the difference between appearance and truth.

Leonhard Euler

We understand the number, but never the counted.

Blaise Pascal

The so-called mathematicians of profession, relying on the immaturity of the rest of humanity, have acquired a credit of profundity that bears much resemblance to that of holiness that theologians have for themselves.

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg

Foreword

About the Content

When numbers become a fetish, when numbers can only be pushed, when additional stimuli are needed by means of a fetish – where does the journey go‽
If everything revolves around deciphering the secrets of others, where is the attention to one's own secrets?

Is the riddle of one's own existence, eroticism, sexuality a number for cryptology, for psychoanalysis, interpretation, exhaustion up to a hypothetical reason of one's own psyche?
But why so brooding?
After the prefix, it goes right into the middle of Fetish-Numbers!

Everything is meaning, interpretation. There is no direct, unfiltered perception, no unencrypted information.
Does truth as such exist at all?
Are fuzziness, uncertainty, estimation, mistake all we can learn about ourselves and the world?
Pure information can also not exist. Information is always conditioned by the context, which assigns meaning to patterns in noise.

Every new discovery, every new insight opens the view to a much larger number of puzzles, misunderstandings. Only those who are stupid, ignorant, can confidently assume that they have completely understood the world, that they know exactly where to go, that they can control everything. The more intelligent ones modestly acknowledge that there will always be puzzles they will not crack, some might, but which in turn will turn out to be the key to doors to further puzzles.
But because of that giving up frustrated?
Without secrets, riddles no research, pleasure.
What else can we do but straying forward?

Techniques

From a technical point of view, this EPUB has some help integrated to give the reader better access to the content. For example, there are various style sheets to choose from. With a display program, which can interpret EPUB completely, there will be such a choice. Therefore you can easily switch between light text on a dark background and a dark text on a light background. For your own settings, you can use the alternatively available simple style, which only highlights or arranges some structures.

If you don't like the default style, you can simply switch to another style with a more common, simpler visual emphasis of paragraphs by increasing the distance to the paragraph before or after, or disable the interpretation of author style sheets completely or use your own style sheet.

However, some display programs are faulty and do not offer any choice. If the default style does not suit you, it is recommended to use a more powerful program that interprets EPUB correctly.

Available alternative style sheets:

Dark on light: Dark grey text on light grey background Light on dark: light grey text on dark grey background Dark on light without graphics: Dark grey text on light grey background (without images) Light to dark without graphics: Light grey text on dark grey background (without images) Gloomy: Light text on dark background, coloured version Yellowed: Dark text on light background, coloured version Pogo: Style in the blue-violet area with a gradient as background – as the name already suggests, a little more aggressive and demanding in terms of reading pleasure Blue: Blue style. dark text on light background Green: Green style, dark text on light background Rubri: Style sheet with rubric and initials Rubri-D: Style sheet with rubric and initial, dark style Alinea: Style sheet with rubrication and alinea, light style D-Alinea: style sheet with rubrication and alinea, dark style Corner: Style sheet with strongly emphasised indentation, light style D-Corner: Style sheet with strongly emphasised indentation, dark style Day: A simple, bright style Night: A simple, dark style Shadow: Structures are worked out with shadow effects Edge: Structures are worked out with edges Border: Structures are worked out with borders Structure: Structures are highlighted by different, light background colours Gauß: Similar to structure, transitions with Gaussian blur Element: At the left margin some elements are named as marginal note, important attribute values are also explicitly specified; a help for text analysis due to semantic text markup Simple: Simple style without colour sets, especially suitable for combination with your own sets None: No author style sheet, especially suitable for combination with own styling

Authors as well as the coworker of this book have no influence on lack, errors, gaps in the interpretation of EPUB by the respective used representation program. With representation problems these should be analyzed first, localized. For this it can help among other things as the first step to check with different programs the reproducibility or also with special test programs to verify that in particular in the book itself really no error is present.
Correspondingly, it will subsequently be possible to correctly address a targeted error message. The authors as well as the coworker may well be the correct contacts depending on the error. With the quality of current representation programs these can be however likewise with high probability the developers of these representation programs. Accordingly as precise as possible data are always helpful to the problem with an error message.
. Generally the error rate is clearly smaller with representation programs of the type browser of usual offerers than with special programs or extensions for browsers for the interpretation of EPUB. In this respect it can be with larger problems with the representation likewise a way out to unpack the EPUB-archive (it concerns with EPUB always an archive of the type ZIP, to read the book then directly in the browser, for which first the file Inhaltsverzeichnis.xhtml is to be opened in the directory Inhalt, in order to get an entrance into the reading order as well as an overview of contents. Over the reference function of the directory can be called afterwards in each case the desired contents.
This procedure can be equally useful to locate problems or errors. For single documents, other check programs can also be used.

Automatic conversions of this book in the format EPUB to other formats can have various shortcomings, which can be due to errors and problems of conversion programs that are too naive and simple in design, as well as to the format into which the conversion is made. The authors and contributors of this book have no control over later manipulations or format conversions, so they have no influence on the complete availability of contents and help of such manipulated versions. They therefore strongly recommend using the unmodified original and having it presented by a powerful presentation program.

Manually, it is quite easy to simplify some techniques and features of the book to the extent that content can be prepared in a different way to make it available in other formats in reduced quality. Especially with probably still quite popular proprietary Amazon formats
