Chapter 1
You are going to inspire those people!!!
It's easy to speak in public. Especially when you're standing up on stage. Yes, that makes it even easier ,for then, you have a whole bunch of people waiting to be inspired by you. So just go ahead. Do it.
What we don't understand when we're demanding public attention for a thing like just talking, is that it is what we want to make of it. Love makes it happen. The love for speaking.
Public speaking is just like shopping for clothes, if you let it be. When you try on clothes you want to be able to look good in them. When you speak in public you have to fit into people's minds. Not physically. Verbally.
Chapter 2
Let's talk Business
There's not a thing repulsive about speaking. We talk with friends. We speak on stage. However there's little instant manipulation you can do on stage. There lies the limit. And a good one too.
Speaking on stage is a lot like presenting yourself in front of the world through the intricate art of speech. So it's best to be prepared. Do a little research. Write down small notes. Have a plan on what you really want your audience to see. Go with the flow of your thoughts. Be smart, artistic, creative. You’re at the stage of engineering a speech. Use your pen well. Then practise alone. You can always bank on yourself. Say the words out loud. Pronouce correctly. If you’re not sure look up the internet dictionaries.
Just say it. For an ideal and successful speech, it usually just takes one moonlit night to finish the plan. Getting up early in the morning and working quietly, with a lot of colorful markers to help indicate different points in your speech, has helped me out several times. Better do it than not!
Chapter 3
Where’s all the bling?
When people go to attend a speech, They don’t expect the ordinary. Well, they usually don’t. What with all the talk on radio and constant persuasion on TV, we have lost all faith in speech.
Or have we? Do we want another Walt Disney to color the world of children and a new Steven Spielberg to make a movie on unexpected dangers. Being dangerous while speaking can earn a load of reward points. The power of voice can hardly be underestimated. But use it intermittently with soft cajoling speech and you’re a winner.
Music to the ears. That’s what a microphone can allow you to be. Just listen to your voice when you’re alone. You’ll find that a variation in the tone and speed can actually enhance your speaking skills. Take pauses between sentences. Avoid being a talking machine. Intonnate. At the end of the day, who that pleases charms.
Yes, charm them. Charm them with your inner thoughts, which are probably the most inspiring in the world. Speak with conviction. Because either way you’ve got to SOUND confident. I’ve seen people go up on stage, smile and speak in a low voice and impress. I’ve also seen people speaking loudly and touching the right strings of the listener’s heart. It’s all in the game. He who adorns, shines. A clear diamond is always priceless. And expensive.
Make your speech expensive. Make it worth their while. And if the audience scares you, stand on stage and think about gold, glitter and high mountains, or, whatever else you think is beautiful. Suddenly you will feel inspired to speak well. And the audience will start looking up to you, as the gold dust rubs off on them…
Then be silent for a while. Enjoy the echo of your own voice. So much applause. So many people waiting to fall in love with you. Just keep a rolling eye and watch out for all the positive body language you’re going to imbibe in your listeners.
Remember, your enthusiasm is your most precious tool. Go all out and speak your mind.
Chapter 4
Going all out
Be assertive. Do not be cowardly. If a bunch of people can scare you away then what about hurricanes and an all-devouring sea storm? Are you out to be in the line of fools or are you going to jump onto the competition bandwagon?
Realize your power. And the power of speech. A good speech can make someone’s life better. There is a certain magic in words that one can hardly deny. Throw in some energy. All the energy that you’ve got. Concentrate on your speech and nothing else. There maybe come developments in the hall while you’re speaking. Ignore. Draw back into your own mind. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate! For in today’s world of deviations, distraction and supertechnology one ringing cellphone can draw you away from your whole purpose. And concentration can be your best bet in such a case.
People have the right to think what they like. They would have comments loaded up for you after you have finished your speech. Good ones as well as not so encouraging ones. Do not bother. Do not fear. Fear no criticism. Fear nothing. Fry your fish according to your own taste. For you are the one going to taste the results.
It sometimes helps to talk less and to gather your wits around you, starting just a half hour before the speech. Put the points of your speech in your head one after the other, so you don’t have to refer to your notes, an annoying number of times, while you’re up on stage. Talk while keeping your objective in mind. Information can be vast. What range applies to your immediate event? Stick to it.
Bring out a sharp conclusion. When you start, start slow, and steadily build on your speech. Go five minutes at a time. And after every five minutes tell yourself “Good, I gotta go further. I don’t want to waste my audience’s time”. Quit being redundant. Clear your mind of all other worries. A clear mind and a tongue in constant control of itself are secrets to becoming an awesome speaker.
Chapter 5
Perfect Harmony
If I have bored you with a long and tedious chapter 5, I will offer some remedies. And I hope I’m successful.
Have you seen a grand and eloquent orchestra playing in a nationwide concert? What’s your take on it? Do they do it in one day? Does it not require a painful string of overlapping musical work hours in order to get to that level? You are not superhuman. You will make mistakes and learn. And if you keep trying to think things out, you will soon be the hero…
So, the orchestra plays on. Did you notice the harmony between all its parts? Can you make your mind, your speech and your body language work together in a likewise manner. Who knows? One day you may please the bored listener of an ability of amazing expectations…Orchestrate yourself. Be the king of your domain. Smile. Charm. Look innocent , yet poised. You were just going to say something to the oh-so-demanding listener…Kiss his worries away and half the battle is won!!!
Chapter 6
Playing it safe
Where are the good old days? Golden pillars and powerful character? Bright red carpets and the blatant truth? Gleaming narrow eyes of the sophisticated listener? Bring it all back. Play it safe.
There’s nothing to worry about. You have your plan ready and you’re all set to face the world. Don’t lose your patience. One day at a time. Tenacity can keep one alive. It’s not such a bad idea to read old literature at times. Arm yourself with real fun words. Do not avoid all jargon. But be admissive to beautiful, sophisticated classy words. How it looks is important . I mean the speech, not you. You are just perfect.
Only don’t forget to dress the part. You don’t necessarily have to wear all black. Accentuate with a silver pen. Or a lavender-burgundy poly satin kerchief. You will obviously feel more relieved when you feel well-dressed. Yes, it matters. To an extent one can barely imagine.
Shatter the glass with a dream voice. Adjust the volume of your mic if it appears tricky and treacherous. If you have your speech and info right, all you have to do is realize your power. One whisper of uncertainty. Then you go on air. One thousand ears hanging on to every word you say. You can do it. Just be the gentleman or the lady you are…
Roses and thorns. Speak now, for another day is tomorrow. Today is your best chance.
Chapter 7
Charmed
Surprise, surprise! You’re now in the middle of your speech. You’re feeling all jittery. But maybe you’ve got your plan ready on your laptop in a corner on the stage.
A vital step. Don’t turn back. Look up. The plan doesn’t work? Go impromptu. By now you must’ve practiced enough of your speech to not be ashamed of changing it. For better or for worse. Break all barriers. Be bold. Say it out loud. You shall charm them…
You craved for a happy ending.
So be it…
You speak beautifully.
