Winged Skies

“You two just get along for once!” Mary said loudly trying to get her sister and Drew to stop fighting. “Just shut up!” Tanis said harshly. Then before she knew it Mary was growling at Tanis. "grrr." Mary growled menacingly. Then the bell rang for the group to go home and on the way home Tanis and Drew were by her sides before Mary could open the school doors. "What was that all about?!" Tanis and Drew said in harmony. Then Drew whispered to her, "Are you a werewolf? And if you are how did you become a werewolf?" "Dude I'm not a lycan and you should know that. You know those are mythical creatures anyway. They don‘t exist." Mary said not looking at them keeping her head up. "Tanis did I really fall asleep during Drew‘s fight?" "Yea. Mary you did. Did you dream?" Tanis asked. "Yea. It was so weird both of you were there and a girl named Destiny was there too. Apparently Drew and Destiny were my best friends. And Destiny was a Greek Hydra. Drew was a werewolf and you, Tanis, you were a vampire.

You two were fighting over me because you both loved me." Mary explained. Then Drew gave Tanis a worried look. “Ok, Her parents died and she was adopted. Her step-parents know nothing about her abilities. We are her protectors. She’s having the dreams.” Drew whispered to Tanis. They continued to walk and Tanis walked up and grabbed her stuff. “Let me carry that for you.” He said to me taking her bag. Drew walked beside her. “Hey Mary, is it ok if I come over and study with you for our history test?” Drew and Tanis asked her in harmony. “Sure, and I noticed you two seem to be connected or something because ya’ll have been going in harmony a lot lately.” Mary said looking at them both. “No, we haven’t.” said Tanis smiling. Drew hit Tanis slightly then silently said a slight “ow”. “We need to tell her soon if she has the dreams again.” Tanis said to Drew worriedly. They walked to Mary’s house silently Mary watching all of nature around her. “Have you ever noticed how beautiful animals and nature is? If I could be any animal I would be a bird.” Mary says when they make it to her house. Then her skeletal structure changed and she was a raven. Tanis wasn’t looking at the time. Drew tapped his shoulder wide eyed at the now Mary-raven. “Tanis. It’s time.” Drew says with worry. Mary changes back to a human wearing a white tee, with black hair and black skinny jeans. She looks down at her outfit. “Ok. What the heck happened to my clothes?” She says with worry. She then lifts her hair examining the now black. “Crud. Who did this?” Mary asked Drew and Tanis. They walked inside. Her parents weren’t to be expected home till midnight. “Ok. Mary, the answer to your question is you. You did that.” Drew says then adds, “You’re a shape shifter. I know it seems illogical but it’s true. You were thinking of turning into a bird and turned to a raven then back again looking like that.” He adds seeing her confusion. Mary is silent. “It’s true Mary. But you look pretty like that, though.” Tanis says smiling weakly. Finally Mary speaks. “First off, one question. What kind of drugs are you two one?” Mary asks pulling her legs up when she sits on the couch and Drew sits in a chair while Tanis sits on the braided rug on the floor near Mary’s legs. Then there is a loud crash. Mary gets up then she is pinned to the ground by Drew. “I am your protector. I have to protect.” Drew says to Mary. “Then what is Tanis? A Vampire? Another protector?” Mary asks sarcastically. “Yes and yes. He is a junior protector. A Probee. And he is a vampire. I’m a werewolf.” Drew says keeping Mary pinned. Tanis races up and checks what the crash was. He comes back dragging a girl Mary’s age. “Jess. What did you break?” Mary asks trying to look at her sister. “She made the dresser fall. I fixed it.” Tanis says looking at the girl. He descreetly sniffs. He lets go of Jessica and drags Drew by him. “She’s a vampire. That’s why you two fight so much and me and her don’t. She hates werewolves.” Tanis says loud enough for Mary to hear, who is still on the ground even though Drew is no longer pinning her. “Wait my sister is a vampire? I am dreaming or losing my mind.” Mary says getting up and sitting on the couch.

Jessica sits next to her sister and smiles. Mary looks at Jessica’s teeth. “Y-you are a vampire. Wait a minute. Are my parents involved in this?” Mary asked excitedly. “No. You, Mary, were adopted. Your parents are mortal.” Drew said slowly sitting next to Mary. “A-adopted? Mortal? I wish there was a way to prove this.”Mary says looking down at her hands. “You can change parts of your body or your whole body. Try turning your hand into a Raven’s wing. Just think Raven.” Drew said to Mary. Mary did as she was told. She closed her eyes then thought Raven. She opened her eyes and looked at her arm. It was covered in midnight black feathers. “T-this is r-real.” Mary stuttered. Then her arm changed back and she looked at Drew. “This can’t be real. No, it can’t be.” Mary said hoping Drew says it isn’t. Drew didn’t say anything for the time being. “Mary do I need to prove I am a Lycan?” Drew asked Mary seeing the confusion. Mary nodded wordlessly. Drew stood and Jessica and Tanis left the room. Drew took a few deep breaths then his skeletal structure changed and he was a midnight black wolf. “Drew? Am I on that T.V. show Punked?” Mary asks the wolf. She held out her hand gingerly and the wolf walked up and raised his head to her hand. “Drew.” Mary whispered stroking the wolf’s ears. The wolf closed it’s eyes at the strokes at his ears. Then Drew changed back to Drew.

With that she got up and walked around. “I think I need some fresh air.” Mary sighs then walks to the door. She walks outside to the sun beaming on her. She never noticed she was cold from finding all of this information out. The sun felt wonderously good. “Mary, wait.” Drew came out with a flicker out worry that instantly disappeared. He searched his pockets and found what he was looking for. He found what he was looking for. He held up the leather chain with the Onyx stone on it. “I want you to have this. It was a good luck charm for me so I thought you could use some good luck.” Drew explained tying the necklace around her neck. “Pretty. Thanks Drew.” Mary said then looked around the skies. She wanted to see what she could do. “Go. But I will be right under you making sure nothing goes wrong.” Drew says following her gaze to the skies. Mary thought of a hawk watching from a nest. Her skeletal structure changed and she flew through the skies. “That girl. Now I gotta chase her.” Drew said then shifted to his lycan form. He raced trying to catch up to Mary’s head start. She looked down on it all. “So beautiful.” She thought finding Drew running directly underneath her. She swooped down to the ground doing a roll turning human. Drew did the same looking at the setting sun. It was going to get dark soon.

They stood there silently watching the sunset then when it got dark we went for a walk. “Drew, Have you ever done this before?” Mary asked looking at her feet while she walked. “Done what?” Drew said trying to look at her face. “Hang out with a freak like me that just found out she can do inhuman things?” Mary said happy it was getting dark for her face was burning. Drew stopped dead in his tracks looking at her. Mary looked at him. “Freak? Mary your are not a freak. Shapeshifters are rare so you a wonder of nature. Not a freak. Never a freak.” Drew said not meeting her gaze. “I doubt that.” Mary said looking away. Now Drew was looking for her gaze. He put his fingertips under her chin and she looked at him just not catching his gaze. “Don’t ever think you’re a freak.” Drew said then they started walking again.

When they got back to her house, Jessica and Tanis were waiting for them. “Where have you two been?” Jessica asked acting grown-up. “Walking. You?” Mary as eyeing Tanis and her sister. “Been here the whole time.” Jessica says. “Well I gotta go.” Drew said going to the door. “So do I.” Tanis said doing the same. Mary and Jessica said their farewells then Mary sat on the couch while Jess sits on the threadbare braided rug. “So this is true?” Mary says looking at the couch seeing a loose thread. “Very. More than you can imagine.” Jess says with a smile. Mary glanced at Jess then she occupied herself with the loose thread on the couch. "Why haven't I been told sooner?" Mary's first thought was. "So how many more are there like me?" Mary asked her sister who stood up with a sad/worried look in her eye telling Mary that Jess wasn't going to tell her. Mary took out her iPhone and texted Tanis and Drew. "How many mor r like meh?" Mary sent to them both. Drew looked at his phone and sighed. "So far u mite b the only 1 we can find." Drew replied quietly. Mary looked at his reply. "The only one? But I thought shapeshifters' were common. In most fairytale stories, there are tons of them." Mary said to Jess getting worried that she might be an endangered species. "Mary, key words, fairy tales." jess said quietly then walked off to her room to "sleep" tonight.
