Sphene
Slowly I opened my eyes, knowing exactly where Zircon was. Every morning she would wake up hoping that the war was all a dream. She was so...so delusional, that head of hers was full of fantasies that would probably never come true. However I couldn’t blame her, I wanted it to end too, I needed it to end.
Suddenly I heard footsteps, knowing it was Zircon’s I quickly pretended I was asleep.
“Sphene are you awake?”She asked.
I kept silent.
“Oh please don’t try that with me. I know you’re awake. Now get up we have things to do and places to be. Remember what today is?”
“Yes. Unfortunately we are now 100 years old. What a drag.”
We stare at each other for a while and then burst into laughter.
“Seriously, Sphene its time. “As soon as Zircon uttered those words I saw fear in her eyes, instantly I gave her a look that said “I’ll be there with you every step of the way, remember that.” She gave me a weak smile.
I knew the secret was big but what if it was too big? What if it was more than we could handle? The fact that we were both angels and vampires couldn’t change anything. Could it?
Sluggishly Zircon and I got into the red and white dresses we had been saving for this very day. The red on the dresses represented blood for vampires and the white represented wings for an angel. The dresses flew down to about a metre past our feet, it was strapless with a small slit down the middle for cleavage. It was made by our Aunt Phoenix who was like a mother to us. However she wasn’t our blood aunt, she was our mum’s best friend. The day before she gave birth to us she had asked Aunt Phoenix to look after us and gave her the secret. We lived with her until we were 12. It was a tradition for female vampires to leave home at the age of 6 but because we were also angels Uncle Theus (Aunt Phoenix’s husband) decided it would be better for us if he doubled it.
“Sphene!” Zircon shouted taking me out of memory lane. “Come on lets go!”
“Ok, o.k. I’m coming.” I raced to her side in less than a second and gave her a bear hug.
She sighed, I sighed and we walked out of our house hand in hand.
We decided to walk to Aunt Phoenix’s. Now don’t get me wrong, we were eager to find out the secret, but something told us that we weren’t going to like it. Thinking about this made we walked at a pace that would make a snail look like Usain Bolt. I was full of anxiety and I didn’t want it show, however I failed.
“Sphene your face is just screaming I’m worried! You gotta calm down, we’re gonna get through this together. Remember together forever.” Zircon’s words filled me up with courage.
“That’s right, together forever” We then did our handshake shouting VA(vampire angels) at the end which made people around us look at us as if we were crazy. We then ran the rest of the way.
Very soon we arrived and before I could knock on the door our Uncle Theus was there, smiling from ear to ear.
“Well look at you girls, you look like angels. Come in, come in, it’s been so long.”
“Exactly 88 years.” Zircon said in a smug voice, obviously trying to sound smart ( which she was, unfortunately). It’s not that I wasn’t smart too it’s just that she was smarter.
“Well are you coming in or not?” asked Uncle Theus breaking the long silence.
Quickly we walked into the massive house, greeted by our beaming Aunt Phoenix.
“My girls! Look at you; you’ve both changed so much!”
“We can’t really have changed that much aunty, were vampires.” I said (unsuccessfully) trying to sound as smart as Zircon had just a few minutes ago.
“Well I know that it’s just after you haven’t seen someone for 88 years they look different whether they a vampire or a human.” Suddenly we were embraced in such a tremendously powerful hug that would have possibly broken every bone in our bodies, if we were human. The hug seemed to last forever but eventually Aunt Phoenix let go. Aunt Phoenix took another look at our dresses and said “I’m not sure if those are the right dresses to wear for this occasion girls. But don’t worry we’ll sort that out later.”
“Phoenix, don’t forget why they are here” whispered Uncle Theus.
He then joined us in the living room and the joyous, happy atmosphere was replaced by a cold and serious air. “Follow me girls,” Aunt Phoenix said warily. Instantly we got up and followed Aunt Phoenix up the stairs through to the loft. It would have been very dark if we had not started to glow.
“What’s happening?” Zircon asked anxiously.
“Your wings are growing!” Uncle Theus shouted from down stairs. The light must have been so bright that he could see it from where he was.
Without notice these big, beautiful, radiant feathery wings grew out from our backs, leaving Aunt Phoenix in tears and Zircon and I in awe.
“O-o-ok, come on girls, we have t get back to the secret.” She sniffed. She then lead us into another room, inside that room were carefully painted portraits of past vampires and angels. But the picture that caught my eye was the one of a vampire and angel couple. The woman (vampire) had beautiful black hair with gold streaks that stopped at the nape of her neck; she had the fullest red lips, her skin a pale light brown colour. But her best feature was her intense silver eyes that would have made any man melt from a distance. The man (angel) had short bleach blonde hair with small bangs landing just over his eyebrow, he had small silver studs on both his ears, thin pink lips, a perfect square jaw and eyes the strangest shade of purple. However the thing that really bothered me was how much Zircon resembled the woman and how much I resembled the man even though we were identical twins.
“He looks like you”
“She looks like you” we said in unison
“That’s because they are your parents” Aunt Phoenix told us.
“Wow” we both said in nothing louder than a whisper.
“Come on now girls. We’re wasting precious time.”
“No wait. How come we have never seen this room before?”I questioned
“Because your curiosity would have eventually lead you to the secret and that would have been to early, your parents wanted to tell you at a time they knew you would be ready.” Replied aunt Phoenix
“Ready for what exactly?” I wondered to myself
“Well were ready now, so can we please get on to the secret now?”
Aunt Phoenix nodded and led us to another door, smaller this time. A lot smaller. No bigger than an average book.
“She doesn’t really expect us to fit through that door does she?” Zircon whispered in my ear.
“Of course not! Don’t be silly.” Laughed Aunt Phoenix
“How did she...?”
I quickly pointed to my ear, hoping that Zircon would understand my gesture
“Ooohhh”
Our attention was then drawn back to Aunt Phoenix who was now reaching into the small door bringing out an even smaller gold, diamond incrusted box. As she opened the box a white piece of paper flew out landing slowly in Aunt Phoenix’s palm.
“Do you two want to read it or should I?”
“You, please.” We answered in chorus.
Aunt Phoenix sighed and began to read.
“My dear girls, it should be your hundredth birthday today and if your Aunt Phoenix is reading this to you then that means we are dead. We are sorry that you didn’t get to know us but we shall make it up to you.”
“Make it up to us? But how?” I interrupted
“You’ll find out when time comes.” Aunt Phoenix said in a very low monotone. And then she continued.
“The reason why you are both Vampires and Angels is because you are meant to stop the war. You see with both species combined you are more powerful than any other angel or vampire. So go out there and fulfil your destiny. Make us proud.
From your loving parents, Inca and Ferro.
