Worst of enemies, Best of friends
By B.T.Broadfield
Chapter 1
It was my first day at Sanctuary Academy, my immortal school.
I was really nervous, although it were only a school of around 100 pupils or so, and nothing like mortal secondary schools, which can hold up to 1000 pupils I was still nervous.
The corridors were long and wide, and the building itself look like an industrial unit of some sort.
The class rooms were really depressing with the walls slate grey and no colourful school art work displayed on its walls.
The floors were chequered industrial steel crates which echoed whenever you walked across them.
If a mortal happened to stumbled upon this school they would presume it to be that of an old derelict building, not an actual school for immortals like myself.
The bell rang for lunch, quickly gathering my rucksack and flinging it over my shoulder I headed for the canteen. Unsure of where the canteen was I followed the crowds of pupils that all seemed to be heading in the same direction.
Of course this resulted in me being the last one in the canteen and finding no available seats.
I searched around the canteen looking for somewhere to sit, finally coming across a table with a vacant seat next to a huge muscular boy.
He was about my age, very muscular and tanned.
I quickly purchased my lunch from the school canteen lady and headed to the to the table.
“Ermm...ermm, excuse me,” I stuttered pathetically because of my nerves I still hadn’t managed to shake off this morning.
“Do you mind if I sit here?” I asked
“Ermm, yeah sure, go for it.” The boy replied
“Great! Thanks!” I replied gratefully as I took my seat.
“Hi, my name is Daniel and you are?” I asked
“Hi, I’m Craig, Nice to meet you,” he replied politely
We hit it off straight away sharing same interests and hobbies soon enough we became the best of friends spending most of our free time together.
The fact that I was a vampire and he a werewolf didn’t bother us and still remained close friends regardless.
Chapter 2
Craig and I spent so much time at each other’s house’s regular participating sleep over’s and camping in the back yard.
We both shared positive and negative thoughts over each other’s homes due to the difference in race.
“Craig you go first!” I insisted
“Shhh well you have to be quiet, till I finish what I have to say ok?” he proclaimed
“Ok.” I mumbled
“You promise!” he asked for reassurance.
“Look I said ok, I promise.” I answered.
“Cool, ok, one no beds mate what’s that about and two, its way to light in there, three what’s with the forest surrounding your house , four no food what the hell,”
He continued with his list of negative comments with regards to my home I was so eager to insult him.
“WELL WE ARE VAMPIRES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!” I thought to myself making sure I kept my promise.
He then finished taking a deep breath he asked me to discuss my opinions.
“Yeah, I liked your house it was brilliant,” I lied I didn’t want to offend my friend.
This wasn’t the only time ever my friend had offended me for instance, there were times he had promised to meet up and hang out, but when I called round his home Sebastian (his werewolf buddy) always answered the door.
“Is Craig home?” I asked
“Yeah but he is chilling with me today!” he replied rudely, slamming the door in my face.
So Craig and I were gradually drifting apart and because of his new friends we also began to argue more and more.
Chapter 3
Craig and I kept our distances.
One day we happened to bump into each other, Craig was playing basket ball with his new found friends.
Their ball was deliberately thrown at my head, so I went over planning on confronting him in front of his friends.
“What’s your problem?” I asked him in a bitter tone.
“Nothing?” he answered and for a moment I thought he was genuine.
“Just practicing my aim is all!” he continued
“Why? There’s no need!” I said
“There’s every need, haven’t you heard you bloodsucker?” he replied in an acid tone.
“Heard what exactly Dog!” I replied with the same tone he spoke to me with.
“We can’t be mates any more, due to the war!” he explained bitterly
“What war?” I quizzed I hadn’t heard anything about a war.
I was beginning to become angry, not explaining what he was on about leading me on with pathetic answers making me look a fool in front of his friends.
“You know the war, the race war my kind against yours, wolves V vamps!” he spoke with a smug tone to his voice.
I stepped back from him and his crowd and asked “when did it start May I ask? Or is this the result of your overactive imagination?”
“Rumour has it, we all meeting tomorrow, at the battlefield up from your yard! So you best get strength up cause your gonna need it MATE!”
I felt my temper rising and I felt like shouting “WHATEVER DOG.” But I never, however I was worried how I was going to be ready for the battle I had no armour etc... Ready.
“Oh... ok see you then I suppose?” I replied trying to keep my temper and nerves contained.
Chapter 4
It was 5:00am and I was laying watching television the war wasn’t on my mind, I didn’t believe Craig at the time.
It wasn’t until my father walked and threw me and new set of armour, sword and shield and explained that I would be needed on the battlefield against the warriors of our kind.
Once I was ready my father and I left the house. Screams and shouting was heard all around as we walked to the battlefield.
I shivered as every hair on my body stood on end with nerves, I wasn’t ready to fight never mind maybe kill another living creature.
The battlefield was covered in crimson red. The battle had already started, corpses of vampires were scattered and alight in flames, and dead bodies of partly turned werewolves lay scattered amongst the dying and dead.
The blood was shocking it flowed like a river across the field.
I had to defend myself as I was attacked; I swung my sword and stopped the wolf in his tracks.
As I turned I saw my father fall to the ground with a mortal wound to his chest the sword swayed as it was embedded in his chest.
“Father!” I cried, tears washing my face as I called out to my Father.
I ran over to my father dragging him to safety, trying to hide him from the battle.
We hid in a small cave, hours of screaming from the battlefield lingered on till all was silent, I fell asleep against my father as we hid out in safety.
I finally came around and discovered the battle had ended; I glanced across the battlefield and was surprised to say only one man standing.
It was Craig.
It pained me to ask for his assistance with my father but there was no one around.
My father was still alive but his injuries were still life threatening; only fire could kill us.
I made my apologies to Craig, I had been ignoring him and being unfriendly and some of my comments in the past had been insulting. So I apologised for my actions politely hoping that he will forgive me.
Craig was a grade A student in medical class, so I asked him “Can you help me save my father?”
“Make sure he is comfortable and gets the blood he needs, he should recover quickly the sword missed his heart,” he replied in an authority tone.
“Ermm, well I am glad you made it, you know survived the battle,” I spoke nervously again.
“Yeah well, you shouldn’t be, remember the war was my race against yours,” he replied
“I don’t care which race we are in, my friends will always come first!” I spoke with strong conviction
“If you’re still willing to be my friend that is? I kinda missed hanging out with you,” I continued.
“Of course I am still ya mate, sorry for being a jerk lately,” he answered quickly
“What about Sebastian?” I questioned
“You don’t need to worry about Sebastian, he died in the battle,” he spoke quietly
“Oh man I’m sorry,” I replied
“It’s ok you didn’t know him that well,” he added in the same quiet voice.
Craig helped me carry my father home, he stayed whilst he washed and changed from battle.
From that moment onwards our friendship grew stronger, we remained friends for years sharing secrets, and neither of us could be found without the other there.
The end
