âWhat was that all about??â I ask bounding ahead to catch-up.
âSkill.â He smirked. âWe want to stay invisible, so negate all possibility of your location as being true.â
I gave him a doubtful look. âIf you say so.â
âI do.â He smirks.
An old friend
~XAVE~
We walked for hours, and Yeira seemed to be getting tired. I was surprised she hadnât asked me to stop for a break. Pride, I guess. I almost smiled. She seemed a bit touchy of late. We had been walking in almost complete silence, and it was uncomfortable and a bit awkward. As we kept moving, I felt Yeira stumble over a root and reached out for her arm before she fell.
âWhoa! Yeira, you wanna take a break?â I asked. She pulled her wrist away heatedly and shook her head.
âNo. Letâs keep moving.â She turned and walked on ahead. She looked like sheâd pass out soon enough. I doubt we were even still in the central Kistna region. Weâd soon be reaching the next kingdom in Kistna.
âYeira, you look as if youâre about to faint. Letâs rest for a bit.â I say.
âNoâŠIâm not.â She spoke stubbornly. âIf youâre tired, fine, rest here. Iâm sure you can catch up to me later.â
I walked up to stand in front of her with my arms folded across my chest decisively. âWe either rest, or I carry you. I am not taking a physically-fatigued woman with me on a treacherous journey through the forests.â I smirk. Point to me.
âXavier!â She exclaim annoyed. âWe donât have time to rest; we need to be as quick as we can be.â
âOkay.â I agree. She gave me a suspicious look.
âWhat are you playing at hereâ?â She was cut off again as I swoop her up and continued to walk down the forest trail. âXavier! Put me down!! I mean it! By order of theâ!â I pinched her side and she yelped. âWhat was that for?!â
âYour safety, madam.â I say sounding serious. âWhat if someone had heard who issued the order? Theyâd know who you were.â I add in a low voice.
âYou put me down, this instant, or so help me IâllâŠ!â
âSo we rest?â I ask innocently.
âFine!â I let her slip down and she struggled regaining her footing, then with a huff she stormed of near a tree stump and sat down grumbling something in another language. Laughing, I walked over to sit opposite. She gave me a glare, and pulled out some lunch from her satchel and began eating. We sat in silence until she spoke again.
âThereâs some in the satchel for you too, if you want some. Outer pocket.â She offered, without making eye-contact.
âThanks.â I opened it to find a packaged lunch for me too. Opening it we both sat there eating in silence. What was she mad about this time? WellâŠI guess thereâs a lot to pick from, I chuckle. Maybe I should just ask.
âYouâre real quiet.â I comment. She kept eating as if to ignore me.
âNicely observed Sherlock.â She replied finally. I almost smiled.
âWell? Whatâs the reason?â
She gave me a look. âMind your ownâŠâ She stopped mid-sentence then shook her head. âSorry, IâveâŠIâve just had a lot on my mind.â
I nod carefully. âMay I ask what it is?â
âYou may. But I doubt Iâll answer.â She shrugged. âNot that it matters.â
âDoesnât it?â
âIt doesnât.â She replied. We remained quiet for another few painful minutes, until she finally spoke up again. âXave, who are you exactly? I mean, I donât know anything about you. Your family? Friends? Hometown? Birthday?â
So was I on her mind? Thatâs not so bad. I smile. âI, madam, am Xavier. And I have no family at present, no single place I know as âhomeâ, my friends are all over the country and my birthday is in August.â
She looked thoughtful. âNo parents? No siblings?â
I felt my jaw tighten. âWhy are you asking?â
She glanced up briefly at me before dropping her gaze back to her food. âYou donât have to answer if you donât want to, you know.â
I donât, I think. I remained silent as I thought it over. I had an attraction to her, Iâll admit it, butâŠhow much should I tell her? Are we even friends, or would she still have me kicked out of the palace if she could? âMy parents died long ago.â I say simply; that was putting it lightly. Her face dropped.
âXaveâŠâ She gave a sympathetic look. âIâm so sorry. I guess thatâs why you didnâtâŠâ She shook her head. âSame with your siblings?â
I nod. âDead.â
She bit her lip. âXavier, Iâm sorry. I shouldnât have asked. I just didnât know why you werenâtââ
âItâs okay.â I smile, cutting in. âJust donât tell anyone else. I hate answering all those questions this brings.â
She nodded. âOf course I wonât.â There was a pause and she dropped her packaging into her satchel and stared at the ground. âDo you miss them?â She asked softly.
âI do.â
She nodded thoughtfully. âThanks for coming with me after the spring.â She looked up with her soft brown eyes to meet mine. âIt was very kind of you.â
I smile. âIt was my pleasure.â I slip my wrapping in her satchel and get up. âShall we continue?â
She smiled lightly. âI think we shall.â
***
âTell me weâre not lost again.â Yeira grumbled.
I laugh. âOkay.â The map said the forest should have ended by nowâor soon anywayâŠ
âXave!â
I look up from the map. âWhat?â
âLook up there. Beyond the hillârooftops!â
I grin. âWeâre making good progress, it seems.â
âWell come on then.â She smiled pulling my hand towards the distant rooftops. We ran up towards the hill and stopped on top to see aâŠtown?
âWhat do you think this is?â I ask. Yeira grinned at me. Without replying, she took my hand again and quickly headed down towards it.
On reaching the edge, we stopped in front of a large area, scattered with stalls. Yeira smirked at me.
âBehold the Saladin Bazaar.â She smiled.
I give her a funny look. âYou like shopping?â
She laughed. âNo, silly. My friend lives here. Samir.â
I nod slowly. âSo, are we going to meet this friend?â
âOf course. Heâs the best, I bet heâll know just what supplies we might need and all aboutâŠwell everything! So maybe he could tip us in about ourâŠâ Yeira glanced around the busy marketplace before continuing. âUmâŠdestination.â
I nod. âAnd weapons.â
She shrugged. âI have the Goddess. I donât need another weapon. You can get some if you likeânot that weâll probably even need them.â
âI think we will.â I say seriously. âAnd whoâs the Goddess?â
She smiled brightly again. âMy sword.â She laughed. âDuh.â
âDuhâŠâ I mimic with a smile. I glint of a metal behind her had my hands on her shoulders suddenly, I was about to pull her away when I realised the glint came from a belt, not a weapon. I look up to find the owner of the belt familiarâtoo familiar.
âXave?â Yeira looked at me confused.
I glance down to her soft copper eyes. SighâŠwait; she was looking at me bemused. What was the question? Oh, my grip. I quickly let go of her shoulders. âSorry.â I apologise, with one of my charming smiles of course.
âWhatâs wrong?â She asked turning to look at the crowds behind her; trying to follow my previous gaze.
âN-nothing.â I say quickly. âSo where is this friend of yours?â
She turned to look at me suspiciously. âNothing ay? Donât think I buy that.â She folded her arms across her chest. âTell me honestly.â
What to say? Think Xavier think. âAhâŠjustâjust a pretty girl walked past. You didnât see her.â I smirk.
She frowned. âSo why the hell did you grab my shoulders while mooning at some other girl?? I swear, boys are soâŠâ She shook her head. âWhatever. I know where his stall should be; just give me the map.â
I gave it to her with an impish grin. âJealousâŠ?â She punched my shoulder irritably and I laughed.
âYou wish, lover boy.â She scanned over the map and looked up. âCome on, it shouldnât be far.â
~YEIRA~
âAre you sure this is the right place?â He asked me. Why donât you ask some pretty girl that walks past? I was about to leer. Instead I nodded. There was small silver bell tied above the stall. I rang it twice and within a few beats, from around the corner came one of my best friends. Samir the Great, as we used to call him.
He stopped suddenly on seeing me and I gave him the biggest brightest smile I could. âRemember me your Greatness?â
His face cracked into a beam. âYeira?â
I nod smiling. âItâs been too long!â I greet the blue-eyed x-village prankster. I walked around the stall to envelop him in a friendly hug. He returned it laughing.
âIt really has.â He agreed
Xave cleared his throat. âSomewhere out of the crowds would be a better idea, donât you think?â He asked.
âOf course.â I agree. âSamir?â
Samir smiled. âRight this way my friends.â I had missed his twinkling blue eyes and mischievous looks. It really had been too long.
We walked a little further away from the stalls to a small house. Opening the door, he ushered us inside.
âMadora?â Samir called out. There was the sound of running footsteps as a girl stepped out to greet him. It was his sisterâwell half-sister, the not-so-shy caramel haired girl I knew so long ago.
âBrother! Your home.â She turned to glance at me and Xavier. âYou brought friends?â
Samir laughed. âI did. You remember Yeira donât you?â She folded her hands in greeting and I smiled.
âOf course.â She smiled. âAnd the gentleman?â I coughed back a laugh and Xave gave me look. Samir laughed.
âI donât knowâ Samir says, looking at me questioningly. âFiancĂ© perhaps?â I blushed and he laughed. âSo youâre Aksum?â He asked.
I bet Xave to a reply. âAksum is not my fiancĂ©, and he is not Aksum and he is not my fiancĂ©!â
Samir laughed out loudly. âYouâve always been so fun to mess around with. Canât you tell Iâm kidding girl?â
I almost pout and instead I turn my attention to a drooling Madora puppy-eyeing Xavier. I roll my eyes, she hadnât changed much.
âWell...â Xavier glanced at me. âWe were hoping for some in-tell and supplies before we head off again.â
âHead off??â Samir frowned. âSurely youâll stay a night or two, wonât you? Madora can clear out a room for youse andâŠâ
âSorry, but we need to get going soon
