"You can speak now," Amberbright padded from the warriors den.
"What a night!" Mistylake stood, stretching each of her stiff legs. "Im so tired, and hungry!"
"Me too." Blueshine mewed. "Wanna share a pike?"
"Sure!" Mistylake smiled at her sister. They padded to the pile, and Mistylake grabbed a fat pike. She padded to the warriors side of camp and lay down. Blueshine followed and lay beside her, and they tucked into the pike.
When they finsihed, Mistylake yawned and padded to the warriors den. As she entered, some warriors were curled in they're nest, and Mistylake sniffed one. It was empty, and the one beside it smelled like Fireclaw. Great! She would get a nest next to her mate!
She curled in it. Blueshine curled in the one next to her, which was unoccupied, and the two warriors drifted into sleep.
Mistylake sat by the warriors den, her smooth gray fur thoroughly groomed. Beside her sat Fireclaw. The two were sharing tongues.
"So when are you going to tell Marshstar?" Fireclaw asked between strokes.
"I dont know, really." Mistylake paused. "Later?"
"Shes got to know." Fireclaw agreed. "She must announce it at the gathering."
Mistylake nodded. "I cant wait." She sighed, leaning against her mate. "Imagine."
"I know." Fireclaw meowed. "I love you."
"I love you too, and our kits." Mistylake purred, pressing her muzzle against Fireclaw's.
Fireclaw smiled, licking her between the ears. Mistylake was expecting kits.
Mistylake stood, stretching. "I'll go tell her now," She meowed, padding to the leaders den. Before she called in, Marshstars voice sounded through the lichen. "Enter."
Mistylake pushed inside and sat across from her leader. "Im expecting kits."
Marshstar sneezed. "I know," She sniffed.
"How?"
"You and Fireclaw are as smitten with eachother as two songbirds." Marshstar purred, sneezing again.
Mistylake frowned. "Are you okay, Marshstar?" She asked.
"Oh, yes, i am fine." Marshstar sneezed again two times.
"No, i think you need to see Snowtuft." Mistylake mewed.
Marshstar nodded. "Okay," She sneezed. Mistylake nodded, and pushed from the den. She headed towards Snowtufts den.
"Snowtuft?" She called.
"Yes?" Snowtuft exited her den, her white fur smelling thickly of herbs.
"Marshstar isnt well." Mistylake paused, lowering her voice. "I think she has greencough."
"Oh, no." Snowtuft shook her head, sighing. "Not yet. I was hoping i would have anough time to gather herbs.." Snowtuft shook her head again to clear it. "Thank you, Mistylake. I'll make sure to check up on her now."
"Thank you." Mistylake dipped her head to her aunt. Snowtuft nodded before entering her den, returning with a few leaves in her jaws. "Will you take these to her please?" The medicine cat asked, clearly distressed. "I must check on the others."
"Yes, Snowtuft." Mistylake took the leaves, that smelled of catmint, and raced to Marshstars den. Marshstar looked up as she entered. Mistylake padded forward. She could feel heat come off her leader in waves, and the stench of illness was already filling the den.
"Marshstar?" Mistylake mewed. "Snowtuft wanted me to give you these her-"
But it was too late now. Marshstars breathing only got shallower. Mistylake frantically sat the herbs down.
Oh, StarClan, no!
Chapter 3.
Mistylake twisted her head around, her eyes wide with terror, and looked back at her leader.
"Marshstar?" Mistylake crept forward, her eyes darkening.
Marshstar didnt stirr.
"Oh, no.." Mistylake wailed. "Snowtuft!"
Snowtuft immediately appeared at the entrance, her eyes curious, but when she saw Marshstar, she shot forward. "Marshstar?"
"I-i was too late," Mistylake trembled, head low. "I didnt give her the herbs in time."
Snowtuft looked at her. "Its not your fault." She meowed. "She had blackcough."
"Oh no!" Tears welled in Mistylakes eyes, and she lowered her muzzle onto her paws.
Snowtuft nudged her gently. "She will live on in your kits." She whispered.
"You know?" Mistylake looked up, bewildered.
"Im a medicine cat," Snowtuft mewed. "I know when a cat is expecting."
Mistylake sighed. "she was the best leader." She mewed, her voice cracking with grief as she looked at the silent, unmoving, noble black and white she-cat.
Snowtuft didnt answer, but she pressed her nose into Marshstars pelt, her eyes tightly shut. Mistylake remembered how her mother and Snowtuft were Marshstars kits.
"Come on," Snowtuft finally sighed. "We must move her to the clearing."
Mistylake nodded and grasped Marshstar gently by the scruff. With Snowtufts help, they moved her delicately to the clearing and lay her in the middle.
"Wha..what happened?" Fishdapple bounded over, eyes wide.
"Marshstar had blackcough." Mistylake told him, her voice cracking.
Fishdapples eyes teared up, and he pressed his nose to his leaders pelt. "You were so wise." He murmured. "Fare well in StarClan."
Mistylake let out a soft wail as she pressed her own nose to Marshstars fur, grief aching in her heart. She felt a pelt brush hers, and looked up to see Fireclaw laying beside her, his muzzle rested in his leaders fur.
"You were a great leader," Mistylake heard him whisper. "Have a great journey to StarClan."
Mistylake sighed, closing her eyes.
Mistylake stood. The vigil was over now. As the Tinyfoot carried Marshstars body out of camp for burial, Mistylake sighed, turning her head.
Foxkit tumbled from the nursery. "Hi, Mistylake!" The six moon old kit mewed. His sister, Whitekit, padded out.
"Hello." Mistylake mewed sadly.
"whats wrong?" Whitekit asked.
"Marshstar died." Mistylake mewed softly.
Whitekit and Foxkit exchanged a nervous glance. "Y-yes well," Whitekit cleared her throat. "Er, we have to, um, go, Mistylake." She muttered. "S-see you later." Without another word, the young she-cat slipped inside the nursery.
Puzzled, Mistylake turned to Foxkit. He backed towards the nursery.
Mistylake pressed her lips together and narrowed her eyes.
There was something going on with those kits!
Chapter 4.
Mistylake watched as Fishdapple entered camp. He had went to recieve his nine lives that night, and it was daylight now. He leaped onto the Stream Rock and called a meeting.
Mistylake padded over, sitting down.
"I have been accepted as leader, so i am now Fishstar." Fishstar nodded. "Before i appoint a deputy, two kits must be made apprentices." He meowed. "Whitekit, Foxkit, you shall be Whitepaw and Foxpaw, Whitepaw, your mentor will be Mistylake, Foxpaw, your mentor will be Fireclaw."
Mistylake smiled, touching her nose to Whitepaw's, who smiled too.
"Now, i say these words before the spirits of my ancestors, so they may see and approve my choice." Fishstar cleared his throat, his gaze sweeping through the Clan until it rested on one single cat.
"Mistylake will be the new deputy of RiverClan."
Me? Deputy? Huh? Mistylake's eyes widened, pleasure and fear shining in her blue gaze.
"Fishstar, RiverClan, i promise that i will be the best deputy i can be for all of you!" She yowled.
Fishstar nodded. "I expect no less." He meowed. "Though, as you are expecting kits, you must step down for a while, but you will be deputy again as soon as they are apprentices. So, Fireclaw will be dpeuty for that time."
"Yes, Fishstar." Mistylake gazed around her Clan, her blue eyes shining with gratitude as they cheered her name.
"Mistylake!"
