a refreshing change and I thought that I couldn't do anything to her, even if I wanted to. "No." I said, and meant it that way.

We went into the house and after a short search I found the bathroom. Everything was shabby and dirty and it stank of stale water. But the faucet worked, and I washed my face and hands. The water was cold but it didn't bother me. I told Aimee that the water was running and she could wash herself. She'd bought shampoo and soap and complained loudly, when she found out that there was only cold water. But when she came out of the bathroom, she was clean and had even washed her hair. I had made a fire in the fireplace, and the room was warming up. The night was almost over and I soon had to go down to protect myself from the sun.

I gave Aimee a job for the day. She should open an account for me and take care of the transfer of my money from New York to here. Everything necessary she needed I gave to her. She was surprised because I trusted her in this. I shrugged and told her that if she should try to disappear with my money I would find her anyway. "I've got your scent my dear, I'm a vampire and able to find you anywhere. You have no chance." I smiled at her, nodding.

She also nodded, "Don't worry, Julien Dubois," she looked at my American passport which I had also given to her. "I won't fool you. I am grateful. Living in the streets really sucks."

I chuckled at her way of talking. "You know, I can give you a new chance Aimee," I then said to her. "If you will also give me one."

"Deal Mr. Vampire," she replied in english with a strong, french accent. "As long as you don't bite me."

I laughed out loud and promised her.

When I locked myself in the basement for the day, my thoughts went back to Nicki. I missed him so much that it hurt and I fell asleep crying.

The next evening Aimee sat in the living room and a fire was burning in the fireplace. She ate some potato chips while flipping through a magazine. When she saw me, she was terrified. I had to look awful but still sat down beside her.

"I got everything done for you", she said as she handed me an envelope. I opened it and pulled some papers out of it. I had a french bank account now and my money was transferred. I was able to get out of this miserable shack.

Aimee glanced at me from the side, she said nothing about my appearance, but she made a remark about my money.

"You're rich," she exclaimed. "You are really rich." She smiled apologetically. "Sorry, but I just had to take a look at your bank statement."

I gave it no comment, put everything back in the envelope and put it beside me. "Thank you that you've done that for me, Aimee." My voice was weak. I had dreamed of Nicolas and I was still captured in this dream. I looked into the fire, breathing slowly in and out, as if I had to force myself doing it. Aimee put a finger under my chin and turned my head in her direction. Inside of me I was still in turmoil. I just couldn't look at her so my gaze remained on the fire.

"Julien," she said my name so gently and in perfect French, that I couldn't help but look at her. "What torments you so? Does it have anything to do with this Nicki whose name you called last night again and again?"

I had to swallow and shook my head. I couldn't talk about it. To talk about it would tear me apart.

I quickly got up and went into the bathroom to wash my face. I turned on the water and looked at myself in the dirty mirror. My cheeks were smeared with blood, the tracks of the tears clearly visible. I looked really awful. My sweater was covered in blood from last night. I took it off and just threw it into a corner. Underneath I wore a black T-shirt, should it have stains they were at least not visible. I took the soap which Aimee had bought and scrubbed my face until the water ran clear down the drain. I ran my fingers through my unkempt hair to organize it a bit. I searched my pockets and in the back pocket I actually found a hair tie. Now I looked at least somewhat presentable.

Back in the living room, I took the envelope and turned to Aimee, "Let's go shopping. New clothes would be appropriate, we look absolutely impossible."

Her face lit up when she heard this. "Yes, Sir! Finally a good idea."

I rolled my eyes with a smile because she was referring to my accent. Off we went, she showed me the nearest ATM and then we went to a large shopping center. We bought new things, some we wore right away and got rid of the old ones in a trash can. With lots of bags in our hands we took a taxi and went to a hotel. I rented a Suite for an indefinite period and we quartered in.

Aimee took a long bath while I called a real estate agent with my new phone, who would help me to find a house for us. Then I stared at the phone for a while, suppressed my caller ID and dialed Nickis number. Why I did this I don't know, maybe I just wanted to hear his voice, even if only the mailbox was answering. After the second ring I actually heard his voice.

"Julien, where are you?" He knew immediately that it was me, but I didn't answer. I felt relieved to hear his deep voice and longed for him desperately.

"Julien, please ... You don't need to be ashamed for what you've done, I deserved it. I am sorry mon Amour. I never should have done you wrong. Julien? "

I still couldn't say a word. My breathing was heavy and I was sure that he heard me.

"Come back to me, I miss you dearly. Please forgive me." He implored.

"It's too late Nicolas," I whispered. "Too much is broken between us." With a trembling voice I continued. "You were my only love Nicolas, you always knew it... Dammit, you knew!"

"Yes, I knew it." He said in a low voice and sighed deeply.

"I'm glad you're okay. I miss you every second you're not with me."

"Oh Julien ... please come back to me." I heard him sobbing.

"I can't." I said firmly.

"Then I'll come to you. Tell me where you are and I'll be there."

"No Nicolas." And I just hung up because I couldn't bear it anymore. I was wishing more than anything that he was back with me, but at the same time not. There really was too much shattered between us and it would never be like before. Never ever.

Aimee stood in the bathroom door, wrapped only in a fluffy towel. She'd heard everything. Looking compassionately at me she sat down next to me on the couch.

"He really hurt you this Nicolas, right?"

I just nodded and stared at the phone in my hand. His voice still echoed in my ears and again I felt tears come to my eyes.

She took me in her arms and held me tight. Her embrace was comforting, it soothed me and gave me some hope. Aimee smelled good, not because of the shampoo she just used. No, it was her own fragrance that came up into my nose and aroused me.

"Everything will be all right," she whispered, and I even believed her. I clung to her and cried silently. Automatically I gently rubbed my cheek against hers, stroking her hair from her shoulders and kissed her neck. Seductively I felt her blood throbbing under her skin, my lips slid easily over it and without any intention my fangs just pierced through the flesh. Her hot blood poured into my mouth and I drank. She let it happen and just whispered: "It's all right." Again and again.

I pulled her closer to me and she moaned as if it gave her pleasure. I raised my head and looked at her, looked directly into her eyes. She was no longer afraid of me. She knew I wouldn't hurt her. Her fingers touched my teeth, then my lips and then she kissed me. I returned her kiss, groping, like towards something unknown, with a little shyness, a little curiosity. Maybe she was never kissed before. I did't know.

My tongue took up her blood which flowed out of the punctured wounds I had inflicted on her. I locked them again with my mouth and took a few more sips, then I looked at her ferociously and full of desire. Her mouth was half open, her own red blood hung on her lips. I kissed her again, this time demanding, our tongues touched, played with each other and we were moaning lustfully. Her hands went through my hair, she pushed them under my shirt and touched my bare skin, gently and tenderly. Her towel had slipped and I could see her bare breasts. I touched them, oh how soft and warm she was everywhere. But inexorably her blood kept flowing from her neck. The towel and the couch were stained with blood. I stopped abruptly, I couldn't let her bleed to death. I bit into my wrist and held it in front of her mouth.

She turned her head and said "No."

"If you don't drink it you'll bleed to death. It helps to heal your wounds." I pleaded with her gently, then she drank. After a few sips I pulled my arm away and she looked in astonishment as the wound healed on my wrist. I turned her head to check hers. They were gone, no more blood poured.

"Look at the mess we made here," she then said dryly as she looked at the couch and her towel. I could only smile, then look at her in a serious way. I touched her cheek, "Thank you."

"For what?" she fastened the towel and looked at me cheerfully. "I trust you. If you wanted to hurt me you would've done it already. Besides," now her eyes looked sincere. "I'll be there for you. You suffer from severe heartache, I will not leave you alone. You won't get rid of me now, Julien."

Her words were heartwarming. A human was sitting in front of me and knew exactly who and what I was and yet she trusted and comforted me.

It was easy for me to open up to her completely, and I told her everything about Nicolas and me, gave her my trust in return and so it remained until the present day.

A few weeks later we found a house and moved in. She got to know a gentle and loving Julien, which basically I've always been. Never again she saw the monster that I was on the night we met. She showed me my new Paris and with her natural, easygoing and open manner, also a new love.

There were no doubts and no secrets between us. I went to my victims alone and then went back to her, every time. She knew exactly what I did and still she stayed with me and accepted me as I was. She shared the night with me, and slept by my side during the day. In Aimee I had found someone who understood me completely. In my worst time she was at my side and she still is. I will never forget this and protect her forever.

I'll take care of her and whatever she needs, she'll have it. Her wish is my command.

Should she ever have the desire to become immortal I will grant her this wish, but for as long as she's happy the way she is, she'll remain a human being.

The pain in me subsided over time and I was able to think of Nicki without it
