Fear
I heard a scream. The light in the alley had burned out. A stranger was just standing, and staring in the back porch window. We couldn’t see his face. Our father panicked, and we were terrified. We grabbed whatever weapons we could from the kitchen drawers, in case he made his way into the house. My heart was pounding as I gripped the meat cleaver, wondering if I had the nerve, or if I would freeze. We thought our father would scare him away, but even he was afraid. Who would dare come into our house? Is this man mental?
Absence
I was always afraid and I didn’t need anybody to tell me scary stories. There were nine of us. My older sister would babysit, and she would hear noises. She’d wake us, and we’d get up and sip cocoa and eat toast. Then we would make a call to our parents at the lounge. Our father worked there part time, and our mother would go out to meet him and see her friends. They always tried to reassure us and tell us they’d be home soon .The lounge closed around two a.m., and by then we were all worked up.
Distorted Faces
We had a very large oak front door with three small windows, very near the top, and I always wanted curtains over them. One evening while I was in the living room I heard someone knocking on the door, and thought, it is so late. I walked over and saw two very tall men with distorted faces on the other side. They had stockings over their faces and were yelling. I was so terrified I couldn’t even scream, and I froze. I remember I sat down on the floor and was unable to move. Everything else was blank after that.
