Reading books fiction Have you ever thought about what fiction is? Probably, such a question may seem surprising: and so everything is clear. Every person throughout his life has to repeatedly create the works he needs for specific purposes - statements, autobiographies, dictations - using not gypsum or clay, not musical notes, not paints, but just a word. At the same time, almost every person will be very surprised if he is told that he thereby created a work of fiction, which is very different from visual art, music and sculpture making. However, everyone understands that a student's essay or dictation is fundamentally different from novels, short stories, news that are created by professional writers. The man laid stretched on the operating table, illuminated by artificial lights, anesthetics running through his veins, the unconscious patient placed his life in the hands – at the edge of the knife – of a well-known, gifted and talented surgeon who worked with the precision that has been ripened and brewed for centuries achieving the best quality.

The surgeon stood soundlessly and effortlessly for countless hours beside the patient whose body has been covered by sheets except for the area needed some alterations. He did the best job, then he said, “First I was a doctor, then I became a surgeon.”

The old man awoke in the midst of a huge and cold room surrounded by the anesthesiologist who was waking him and the boy who was going to carry him into his private room. He was scared and he shivered. He could not open his mouth to ask of how everything turned out. He was still in a state closer to where he was moments ago; he hasn’t regained full consciousness. He couldn’t feel the pain or the bandages on his body. He remained as he was on the operating table, limp, inanimate, nearly lifeless, with huge shimmering, green eyes.

“I couldn’t help it!” he proclaimed.

“Don’t blame yourself! You have done everything possible. Without you, he wouldn’t have lasted this long. You gave him and his family an extra forty-eight hours!” his assistant tried to calm him.

He sighed. His blue eyes, veiled his age and wisdom, was now blurred by a dark ocean of internal helplessness. He didn’t like to lose patients, even if they were in hopeless conditions. The sun striking his eyes, the wind blowing against his hair while he smoked a cigarette, took away some of his misery; but it was undeniable: nature won again.
