I frowned to myself and ran after him. “Hays!” I called down the hall, “What concert are we going to?” I stood there with my hands on my hips and my lower lip pursed. He laughed easily and shook his head. “You shouldn’t do that look on me. You know I always give in. It’s hardly fair.” I stuck my tongue out at him and walked up to him. I leaned down and whispered into his ear, “Why do you think I do it?” I tried to jump away but he grabbed me and pulled me o the couch with him. He pinned me down with my hands above my head. “Really? Well guess I’m just not going to tell you.” He said teasingly as he looked away. My voice was pleading now. “Pweese!!! Jay-bear! Tella me!” I was pretty sure I sounded like a little girl wining for her Barbies but I didn’t care. He couldn’t hold back the laughter that threatened to escape from his lips. He burst into laughter. He laughed so hard he lost his balance and fell off the couch. Still laughing I might add. “You-,” he panted out between laughs, “sound-, like-,a-, baby!” I gasped and slapped his chest. With one last stick out of my tongue I got off the couch. “Meaner!” I called out as I sprinted off to my room. I smiled once I shut the door.
I went to my closet and pulled out my gigantic make-up case and put it on my bed. I opened it and it made a snapping sound as the sides came down. Hmmm, I thought to myself. I gingerly tapped my fingers on the bed as I scanned through the various make-up items. A slivery grey eye shadow caught my eye right off the bat. I picked it up and examined it. It had sparkles on it. Satisfied with my choice I grabbed my eyeliner and a brush for my eye shadow and walked to my mirror. I wasn’t like most girls that dressed the way I did. I always applied my eyeliner thinly and put a little shadow above it; crease level and no higher. I looked at my eye shadow in the mirror and paused. It needed something. I walked quickly back to my case and grabbed the black eye shadow. I dabbed the brush in it and put it on the corner of my eyelids. Then I grabbed my mascara and finished the job. I glanced once at the lip glosses I had, but Jaylin never liked to kiss a girl with gloss on so I settled for the dull waxy shine of my Bert’s beeswax chap stick. I smacked my lips together and headed out the room. I paused at the hall closet and grabbed my black hoodie. My mother always hated it. She said it looked like it was made inside out. I just rolled my eyes and said, “That’s how it’s supposed to look, mom.” I shook my head at the memory and put on my hoodie. I tried running through the list of concerts I had mentioned I wanted to go to. I came up short though. None that I seemed to recall were near here. I squinted my eyes thinking maybe if I looked serious in my thoughts, I might get it. And….. Nothing. I sighed and continued down the hall. When I got to my living room, Jaylin was standing there with a blue rose in his hands. His green eyes looked up at me framed by his thick black lashes. My breath caught. For a moment I couldn’t believe he was mine. This guy who had so willingly stood by my side through thick and thin, though I have hurt him, and though I didn’t deserve him, was mine. I sauntered up to him and touched the petals of the blue rose gently. It was like touching velvet. He grabbed my hand and lifted it to his lips in a formal gesture. I felt my face blush a light shade of red.
“For my love.” He held the rose out to me. All the thorns had been clipped I saw. He took care in making sure I wouldn’t hurt myself. i had never been very good with pointy objects. Somehow or another, I always managed to hurt myself. I took the rose from his hand and replaced it with my own. He smiled broadly at me and led us out the door. Kyle was in the driver’s seat of a black Lamborghini. “Wow.” Was all I could manage to get out. The car was beautiful. I smiled and yelled, “Kyle!” I ran from Jaylin and hopped over the car. I ran to the driver’s side and hugged him. “I didn’t really get to talk to you this morning! I missed you! Where were you at school all week?” I asked him. It all just kind of came out uncontrollably and I hadn’t realized just how tight I was hugging him until he choked out, “Cant-, b-br-breathe!” “Oh, opps!” I said and stepped back. A bemused smile crossed his face.” And here I thought I was your least favorite out of the group.” He told me tauntingly. He waggled his brows at me and I giggled. I always thought of that stupid cartoon my little brothers used to watch called “ED, EDD, and
EDDY”. Thank god they were at school now or else I would never hear the end of it.
I hopped back over the hood of the car and landed in front of Jaylin. “Well hello there beautiful. To what do I owe this honor?” he said in a mock, and I must say very bad, impression of an old English man. He bowed low and smiled when he came back up. I poked him in his cheek and jumped in the back seat of the car. He chuckled once and climbed into the passenger seat. Thanks to Jaylin being way too tall, he couldn’t fit in the back seat with me. Unless of course, he wanted to practically eat his knees. And I really can’t imagine a reason he would. Kyle turned up the radio just in time for “Beautiful Lie” by 30 Seconds to Mars came on. “Oh hell yeah!” we all said in unison. We screamed along to that and every song that came on after until we arrived at the Verizon Amphitheater. Then it clicked in my head what concert it was.
“No fudging way! I thought the Vans Warped tour was sold out!” I practically yelled with my eyes in a star struck stare. “It’s not sold out if you happen to know Haley.” Kyle told me with a wink. “What?!” I screamed out of wonder and curiosity. “Since when are you tight with the lead singer of Paramore?!” “Since I fixed her tour bus last year. She said if I ever needed a favor to call and well, I figured that an awesome concert like the Vans Warped Tour was just an opportunity that we couldn’t miss out on.” He said nonchalantly. This was majorly cool. I saw Kyle’s hand come up with three backstage passes. I nearly fainted! I snatched done and hung it around my neck. I started singing “Ignorance” by Paramore and Kyle and Jaylin joined in happily as well. There was a tap on the window beside me and thanks to the windows being tinted so dark I couldn’t see a thing. I pushed the down button for the window and nearly closed it back up the instant I saw who it was. It was Skylar. He put his arm on the window edge to keep it from going up. “Alondra!” he said excitedly. “I was hoping you would be here. I really need to talk to you.” He said on a more serious note.
“Whatever you have to say to me can be said here in front of your brother and my boyfriend.” I snarled. He just had to ruin this for me. After all, the shit he’d been doing behind my back, now he wanted to talk. “Boyfriend?” he asked. His voice sounded shocked but his eyes stared at Jaylin with a ferocity that would rival that of a jungle cat. “So I see it’s on to the next one huh? You really must not have even cared an ounce about me! You just go to the next guy in line; is that it?” he growled viciously and grabbed my arm. He was pulling my arm so hard that is was hurting. “Let go!” I screamed. He didn’t listen. Instead he pulled more and Jaylin and Kyle practically flew out of the car to yank him off. Skylar reached up and punched Jaylin square in the face. I gasped and cried out, “Jaylin!” “You damned little slut! I’ll-“but his words were cut short. His grip on my arm loosened as he fell to the ground. I looked out the window to see Kyle holding him down by his throat. Skylar was kicking and Flailing his arms and legs around trying to get him off of his neck. “Remember when dad used to beat on me Skylar? You watched me fight him back! You knew he would never touch you. You were his favorite.” He said the word with a sneer. “I had to make him stop. You just stood there laughing the whole time. You are turning out just like that monster!” he yelled. Kyle pressed harder on his neck; cutting off more and more of his air flow.
“Kyle!” I called out. He didn’t seem to hear me. He was too blinded by rage. He had to stop this. He would kill him. I shoved the car door open and ran to him. “Kyle.” I begged. “Please stop!” he didn’t. I glanced around for help but Jaylin was still out cold. I placed one of my hands on the back of Kyle’s neck and the other on the side of his face. I turned him to me. His eyes looked pain stricken. I gulped and pleaded, “Kyle, you have got to stop. You will end up killing him. Then you will be in jail with the burden of knowing that you killed your brother. He isn’t worth any of this.” The pain in his eyes faded and reality took over he backed off of his brother and sat beside him. Skylar was choking on air. He sat up swiftly and scrambled to his feet. His hand clutched his throat and he ran away.
Kyle had buried his head in his hands and it sounded like he was sobbing. i sat beside him and he leaned on my shoulder. The tears her was holding back came out in torrents now. I held him close and murmured, “It’s gonna be okay hun.” I rubbed my hand along his back in a soothing manner. I notice Jaylin begin to stir and come to. He sat up and looked like his head was spinning. He put a hand to the spot where he was punched and moaned. “Damn! That shit hurt. Who is-“he began but shut up when he opened his eyes and looked. I looked at him and made a “Shhh!” gesture with my mouth. He gave me a curious look and then got up and came to me. “Come on guys.” He whispered. “Let’s go home now.” Kyle and I nodded in agreement. I helped him up and held onto him while I walked him to the passenger seat.
He was in no condition to drive home. When I tried to put him in the passenger seat he shook his head no. so I helped him into the back seat and I sat beside him.
