“My name’s Robert Shirtliffe,” the man said. Robert looked just like all the other men waiting to join the Patriot’s army. No one would have ever guessed that his name wasn’t really Robert, any more than they would have guessed that Robert wasn’t even a man.
With short hair and the thick fabric of her outfit hiding Deborah Sampson’s chest, she was easily mistaken as a man.
“Robert Shirtliffe,” the attendant before her repeated. Deborah nodded stiffly, knowing that without her disguise, they wouldn’t let her join. “Welcome to the army,” the attendant muttered. And with that, Deborah was in!
There it was again – that slight noise just over Nancy Hart’s fence. Undoubtedly, this was a spy, another of Nancy’s many loyalist enemies.
Any woman should have been terrified, but Nancy was tall, strong, and eager to fight.
The soup hanging over the fire was steaming. Nancy ladled out some, and without hesitation, she flung the hot liquid over the fence. Seconds later, a howl revealed she’d hit her target. Soon American soldiers came to take the injured man away.
Nancy Hart was already beginning to prove she could influence the Civil War. Of course, this was only the beginning.
“Molly!” a hoarse voice called. “Pitcher!” It was the cry for water that nicknamed Mary Hayes, an important patriot woman.
Molly hurried through the smoky haze of battle. She stumbled over a wounded body, suddenly recognizing it as her husband. He was gasping for breath, his canon left unfired.
The wound would not kill the man, but the unfired gun might hurt the army.
Mary raced to the unattended canon as a cannonball whizzed by, ripping her skirt. Undeterred, she continued to the large weapon, ready to fire. Molly was no longer just a nurse. Now she was a soldier.
