Chapter One
Standing on the curb, waiting for the bus to arrive, I replied to Paula’s text. She asked if I wanted to go to the mall tomorrow, but we just went to the mall on Wednesday! She’s been my friend since middle school, and yet she still doesn’t know that I’m busy every other weekend. Again, I typed in the words ‘busy’ and sent it. It seemed as if this was a routine because she can NEVER remember. I heard a loud screech and when I looked up, the bus was in front of me, doors open. I shoved my phone into my brand new yellow purse and climbed onto the bus.
Paula was sitting with her boyfriend, so I sat in front of her. I fixed my white flowered skirt, and looked out the window. The view of the suburban town was so peaceful. I always loved to take walks, and on my spare time, take pictures of the blooming plants and animals. A few minutes later, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and Paula was sitting on her boyfriends lap, chin on the top of the seat.
“Why didn’t you answer me when I called your name?” She asked in disgust.
“Um… I didn’t hear you. Did you not realize we are on the bus?” I didn’t mean to sound so… so mean… I stared at her for a moment, waiting for her to say something rude back. After she didn’t I apologized “Sorry. I’m just tired.”
“It’s fine. We all get that way sometimes.” She smiled and pushed my shoulder gently.
When I turned around I noticed that we were almost at the school already. So, I got out my zebra striped I-Phone, silenced it, and then shoved it back into my purse. I slid over to the edge of the seat, took my sunglasses off, and then climbed off the bus. Walking over to see Elizabeth, I heard a deep voice calling my name. I turned around to see who it was, John. I have had a crush on John since fifth grade, but he always had a girlfriend, until now! Quickly fixing my hair, I stopped and waited for him to catch up to me.
“Hey.” He stood next to me, all six, HOT, feet of him.
“What’s up?” I asked, slinging my purse over my shoulder.
“Would you like to hangout this weekend?” He smiled and handed me his number.
“Um… Let me check my schedule. But I’d love to.” I smiled and walked away.
Oh my god! Why did I do that?! I’m busy this weekend. I have no schedule to check, I know what I’m doing tomorrow, seeing my dad and his side of the family. I can’t go on a date! Ugh… Why does the world make things so difficult for me? I mean, I hate making decisions and the world should know that by now. I mean hello, I’ve been living here for 15 years!
I glanced around, looking for Elizabeth, but I was already inside the school. Wow, I didn’t even remember walking in here… I was already in the middle of the school lobby. So I decided to forget about that little mishap for a bit, and try to have a good rest of the day, well until I have to make a decision…
The last ten minutes of the school day…
“What are you gonna do?” Simantha asked, with a huge smile on her face.
“I really have no idea… I mean I really like him. But I’m busy this weekend, and I don’t want to hurt my grandma’s feelings, I mean she’s like, old…” Leaning my head on my fist, I thought about my decision.
“Well, I think you should tell him that you can’t hang out this weekend but maybe sometime next week.”
“Yeah. Good idea!” I grabbed my French book, handed my teacher my class assignment and ran out of the room just as the bell rang.
Up the steps, and to the fourth floor, I had to get there before he does. As soon as I got there, I noticed that he wasn’t, and there were barely any people in the hallway. So I opened my locker and got out my sunglasses, and put my books on the shelf. I glanced to my left, and he was approaching his locker. I slammed mine shut and sprinted over to him. Smiling, I leaned on one of the lockers next to his. He smiled, and opened his locker, getting all of his stuff and shut the door.
I waited for him to put his hoodie on and then spoke, “I can’t hangout this weekend. I’m sorry.” I frowned, “But I would like to hangout, maybe Monday…” I smiled and blinked a few times.
“Well, I don’t know if I can. But if I don’t have baseball practice, we will. You should text me.”
He smiled, patted me on the head like a puppy, and turned to go. I grabbed his arm and with all of my courage, standing on my tiptoes, I kissed him on the cheek. He smiled shyly and I strutted past him. I had the biggest smile on my face, and as I walked down the steps, I pulled my phone out of my purse to text John. Pulling the number out of my dark wash jeans, I unfolded the paper and typed the number it into my phone, saving the contact as; Jhottie ♥.
Walking to the bus, I felt my purse vibrate. My heart fluttered when I opened the text. He said that he’s glad we can possibly hangout next week, with a smiley face at the end! Eeeh! I could feel my face turning red and my heart was pounding. I can’t believe he likes me! Finally!
As I climbed on the bus, I noticed Elizabeth and Paula sitting in the back waving to me. So I decided to join them. I sat in the seat in front of Paula and next to Elizabeth. They were giggling about something, and I wanted to know. Although I kept asking them, they just kept saying that it was just a joke they heard. After half of the bus ride home, hearing giggles and little whispers, with an angry face and a stern voice I asked again.
“God, take a chill, it’s just something we heard.” Paula said, laughing more.
Rolling my eyes, I pulled out my lip-gloss. I carefully put it on, making my lips plump, trying not to spill it on my new light blue frilly tank top. When the bus hit a pothole in the road, I squeezed it and then with a deep breath, closed the lid and put it back in my purse.
It was almost my stop and when I stood up and asked Elizabeth to scoot over so I could get out, she said, “How was the smooch?”
The bus came to a stop, making me jerk forward, almost flipping over the seat in front of us. My jaw locked, my face was getting red and my nostrils started to flare. I HATED when they did this. They find out things about me, and everyone else for that matter, and then they taunt me about it. I smiled at her, using my long legs (thank you mother) I stepped over her and got in line to get off the bus.
Before getting to the front, I said, “It was nice, thanks for asking.”
