The Little Pink Balloon by Lee Haydn Straight 2010 June
“Daddy, Daddy!”, cried Little Pink as she sailed higher and higher into the air. “Be strong Little Pink!”, her father called back to her. “Find your way home and I’ll be waiting for you. I love you Little Pink!” “I love you too Daddy!”, she shouted as the warm summer breeze took her away, here eyes fixed longingly on the blue shape below which became smaller and smaller as she drifted away.
And then it was gone, and she was all alone.
Little Pink cried and cried. “How will I ever get back?” she sobbed. “When will I see my Daddy again?”
She was so scared as she closed her eyes and spun through the sky above the houses and the trees. Up, up, up, until suddenly, everything became still.
Her dizzy head was pressed against something soft and when she opened her eyes and looked up she saw that she was stuck in a cloud. Little Pink stopped crying and looked down. She could still see the village far below and wondered if her Daddy could still see her. Safely nestled in the cloud, Little Pink thought of nothing but him, and as the sky turned from blue to red to black, and the stars came out, Little Pink fell asleep.
Little Pink woke as the sun came up. She looked down and saw the village.
“I’m still here!”, she gasped. And then she jumped when she heard a tiny voice.
“Good morning!” said a ladybug, who was flying by. “What are you doing up here?”
“Oh, good morning”, Little Pink replied. I’m from that village down there, but I want to go home. Please can you help me?”
“I’d be very pleased to help”, said the ladybug. “I have an idea!”
The ladybug held onto Little Pink’s golden string with his legs, very tightly and took a deep breath. Then the ladybug flapped his tiny wings as hard as he could. He flapped and he flapped but he could not pull Little Pink.
“I’m very sorry”, said the ladybug. “I am just not strong enough. I wish I could have helped. But if you don’t mind I would like to stay with you and rest on your string”.
“I would like that very much”, said Little Pink. And so the ladybug stayed and Little Pink didn’t feel so alone.
After a while, Little Pink jumped when she heard another little voice.
“Good morning!” said a butterfly, who was fluttering by. “What are you doing up here?”
“Oh, good morning”, Little Pink replied. I’m from that village down there, but I want to go home. Please can you help me?”
“I’d be very glad to help”, said the butterfly. “What can I do for you?”
Little Pink explained the plan, after which the ladybug and the butterfly held onto Little Pink’s golden string with their legs, very tightly and took a deep breath. Then they flapped their tiny wings as hard as they could. They flapped and they flapped but they could not pull Little Pink.
“I am so very sorry”, said the butterfly. “I’m really not strong enough. I wish I could have helped. But if you don’t mind I would like to stay with you and rest on your string”.
“I would like that very much”, said Little Pink. And so the butterfly stayed alongside the ladybug and Little Pink didn’t feel so alone.
Little Pink jumped again when she heard yet another little voice.
“Good morning!” said a bird, who was gliding by. “What are you doing up here?”
“Oh, good morning”, Little Pink replied. I’m from that village down there, but I want to go home. Please can you help me?”
“I’d be more than happy to help”, said the bird. “What would you like me to do?”
Little Pink explained the plan, after which the butterfly and the ladybug held onto Little Pink’s golden string with their legs, very tightly, and the bird grasped it tightly in her beak. Then they flapped their tiny wings as hard as they could. They flapped and they flapped, and they flapped and they flapped and suddenly Little Pink started to move.
“Wee, hee!! “ cried Little Pink. “You did it! I’m going home!”
Together, the ladybug, the butterfly and the bird pulled Little Pink back down from the sky and as they did Little Pink could see the village getting closer and closer. Down, down, down she came until she could make out the house where she lived. Down. down, down, until there he was! Her Daddy! Waiting like he promised he would, searching the sky for his Little Pink. And then he saw her and his eyes lit and the biggest smile burst across his face. “Little Pink!” he cried. “Is it really you?”. “Yes Daddy! I’m home!”. “Oh, Little Pink. I thought I had lost you forever. I’m so happy to see you!” I love you so much!”
And with that, the ladybug, the butterfly and the bird pulled Little Pink to him and tied her string around his as tightly as they could. With a smile, they all flew off as Little Pink and her father called out to them, “Thank you! Thank you so much! “
“Our pleasure!” they called back, then disappeared into the sky.
From that moment on, Little pink never left her father’s side. And there they stayed, as close as they could possibly be, for the rest of their lives.
