Chapter One
I wake up to the smell of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. I run downstairs to the kitchen and am happy to see my mom as jubilant as always. After I eat, I head off to school. Its my second year of high school and boy am I glad because freshman year sure was hell. My high school isn't really like other high schools though. We really don't have cliques. Everyone hangs with who they want, and no one judges. As I walk down the hallway, thinking about all these things, someone suddenly jumps on my back. Its my best friend Casey. "Hey Imani!" "Hey Case.Whats with all the excitement?" "You won't believe me when I tell you!" "Your my best friend, I will always believe you." "Okay well....I lost my v-card to Trey yesterday!" I didn't even know what to say. I just stood there with my mouth open. "Well? Usually you have so much to say and now Imani Fields is now speechless? I find this very surprising." I giggled at how sarcastic she could be sometimes. "Your so sarcastic Case. I was just shocked; I thought we both promised to wait until prom night!" "Sorry..I couldn't wait any longer. My body took a mind of its own." "Yeah, whatever. Well I have to go to class. I'll see you later I guess." The rest of the day seemed to go on forever. After school I came home but the house was quite. I called for my mom but I received no answer. What the hell is going on? Being that my mom was always there when I got home is what made me question the situation. I went upstairs. I heard noises. But they weren't noises that were familiar to me. I heard a woman moaning and at that point I knew exactly what was going on. It was my mom. She was here. But the thing was she was here, having sex with another man.
-Chapter Two-
I never thought my mom would move on. After my dad disappeared and left for no apparent reason, my mom just wasn't the same. Yeah, she was peppy and still had that lively personality about her, but she still wasn't the same. It bothered me also...but I got over because I was little and focused on the more material things in life. I didn't think to open the door. I just simply left and walked to the Starbucks by my house. It was kind of weird you know. You would think that if a person wanted to clear their head they would go somewhere quite to be alone, but that wasn't my aim. I liked being around people. Coffee places are usually places where people come to relax and do some work or something like that. But at the one in my neighborhood, all the teens and families kind of took over. Thats why I come here when I need to think. Seeing all the people laughing and talking and enjoying themselves somehow gives me comfort. Seeing the mothers caring for their children and the teen lovers on dates makes life seem like less of a challenge for me. I get in line and then order my favorite- a white coco. I know it sounds pretty weird but its basically a white hot chocolate. A sit at the two seater table by myself and listen to my ipod and watch everyone mingle with each other. And then he walks in.
-Chapter Three-
He was kind of tall with hazel eyes. He was caramel, same skin color as me. When he walked in, girls gasped because I guess they were thinking the same. The guys grunted and got annoyed at the girls' reactions. Not even acknowledging the people staring at him he went to the counter and proceeded to order. What stunned me was he ordered the same thing I did. It made me sort of tingly inside because no one else really knew about that drink. He then found a vacant table and sat there and looked at his phone. I then suddenly found myself getting really into the song that I didn't notice when I was watching him and started humming to myself. Then I noticed that he was staring at me. I felt like a creep. I stared down nervously. And when I looked up he was sitting at my table. "Excuse me. I hope you don't mind me joining you. I was kind of pulled in by your enthusiasm to whatever your listening to on your ipod." "Oh, no not all. I'm Imani." "Nice to meet you Imani, I'm Mason." " This is such a small town and I've never seen you here before....so I'm guessing your new." "Yeah, my parents wanted to move to a quiter place. We all got tired of the fast life." "Oh okay, I see. So what school are you planning on going to?" "Truth High." "Oh , thats cool, thats where I go!" I was mad at myself for getting so excited. "Oh really? Well I'm sure we'll be seeing each other a lot more then." "Yeah I guess we will. Well, I have to go. I'm sure my mother is probably wondering where I am." "Okay well, call me sometime." He handed me his number and I stared at then slid it into my pocket and walked out the door. I felt really good. But then reality hit me. There were so many good looking girls at Truth High that he would probably forget about me and go on to the next one. Thats just my way of thinking. Casey is always talking about her and Trey and it just gives me no hope. Ever since we were little, Casey has always been pretty, outgoing, and an all around great girl. But me, I was complete opposite. I never thought of myself as pretty. My mom would tel me I'm beautiful, but she's my mom she's sort of inclined to do that. My point is, I've always secretly had these self confidence problems. On the outside I probably seem a little shy but a cool girl , but on the inside the real me is fighting really hard to come out. I've only had three boyfriends. Most of them I really didn't even like. When Casey talks about her and Trey I really want to yell at her to shut up, but considering she's my best friend I just listen to their love stories. Its really really annoying. I don't know why meeting Mason brought all these thoughts up, but its making me question why he approached me. Was it really because of me being into what I was listening to.....or could it have been something else?
-Chapter Four-
When I get home, mom is in the kitchen cooking as if nothing happened. I can't really get mad at her for acting like nothing happened because she doesn't even know that I know. "Hey Mani, where were you?" "I was at Starbucks." "You always go there when somethings on your mind so.....whats going on?" Tears flared in my eyes, I ran upstairs and shut the door. I don't know why I got so emotional but it all happened so fast. "Whats wrong sweety?" "Just go away!" "I refuse to leave until you tell me what's wrong. I'm coming in." I might as well tell her, I have such a strong relationship with my mom, its so hard to keep things from her. "I saw you and I heard you!" "Saw me and heard me what?" "I saw you and heard you doing it with some guy!" "Aww, sweety I'm so sorry!" "Why, why did you do it?" "I had to move on. As your father did. I still have yet to know the reason why he left without a reason, but I do know he moved on. I couldn't live my life in vain just because he wasn't happy in our family." "I guess. How long have you known that guy?" "That guys name is Greg. And I knew him actually before I met your father. I'm sorry to bring all this upon you...I should've told you earlier; Its just that I didn't know how to tell you and I didn't know how you would react." "I didn't meant to react that way mom, its just that I couldn't see you with anyone else except dad. And whoever you affiliate youself with is fine in my book because you have always had good taste." We both laughed. Now I'm okay. I don't know what came over me, it was the first time I had ever cried about dad leaving. Even when I was little I didn't cry about it. "Well I'm sure dinners ready, so how about we go downstairs and eat and watch one of those lifetime movies?" "I'm down for that."
-Chapter Five-
That was yesterday. And today is Monday, the worst day of the week for me at least. I wake up on time dreading the day ahead, and then I remember. Mason is coming today. I suddenly become really concerned about what to wear and how my hair should be. I put on my flower romper, leather jacket and moccasins. I curl my hair and put on mascara and lip gloss then I'm out the door. I skip breakfast and tell my mom that I'll just grab a donut from the donut shop on the way to school. For some reason I don't feel like eating a full breakfast. As I enter the donut shop, there are a lot of old guys and weird looking people here. I get my donuts and hurry out the shop and feel like all those dirty old men were watching every step I took. I walk across the street and see all the kids from school hanging outside as the wait for the morning bell to wrong signaling that school has started. Since I can't find Casey and none of my other friends, I just go inside to find my locker to get what I need for my first class. When I close my locker, its Mason. "Hey Imani!" "Hey Mason, I didn't see you there." "Sorry If I scared you, I just saw you and wanted to see how you were doing...and why aren't you outside like everyone else?" "I should ask you the same question. Anyways, I was getting some things for my first period since my friends were nowhere to be found." "Oh thats cool." "Yeah...well I'm gonna go see where my friends are. I'll talk to you later." Suddenly, I sort of lost interest in Mason. I don't know why, but I just DID. I forgot to mention that before I saw him hanging around a very large group of girls before I saw him in the hallway. I think thats why I lost interest in him; That showed me that he was more of a player rather than the guy I thought he was. Damn, just when I thought there was one different guy in the world, he turned out to be a player. Again the day went on. I caught up with Casey and at lunch felt uncomfortable sitting at the table with her and Trey, them being a couple and all I felt like a third wheel. So I just ate my lunch in the bathroom. Then Casey came in. "Imani? You in here?" "Yeah." "Oh', why are you eating your lunch in the bathroom?" "Well, its sort of uncomfortable sitting with you and Trey, I feel like I'm invading you guys' privacy or something." "Oh. Well your not. I have a question though;
