“I’m dead,” said a girl -dressed in jeans and a purple shirt that read watz up- solemnly.
“Then why are you still talking?” I said playfully, and laugHhed.
“I’m dead on the inside” she said, wiping the smile off my face.
“Why?” I said concerned.
“Because …,” She started sobbing, “my boyfriend just dumped me, and I…I’m falling for cute, Russian Sam, but he’s our best friend, what am I going to dooooo?!”
I just stood there like a deer in the headlights, not knowing what to do.
“I don’t know what to say, but I’ll help, and hello are you using reverse pchycology?!” I said.
Sam is a brunette and has “blazin’ blue” –which is a blue as a blue as i don't know a blue thing?- eyes, is kind of dorky –talks about star wars and stuff - , and is a “Good boy” A.K.A. a boy who doesn’t take risk, and is the total opposite of a girl’s dream.
Marilyn is a blonde with hazel eyes. She is 13 and in my opinion falls in love every week, but she’s a tomboy just like me, and that is why we hang out.
I am Joey, and I have black hair, am 13, am a tomboy, and tell your best friend everything is our lifetime motto.
I pulled out my beat up, old, checkered, composition notebook, A.K.A. “checker board”, and my black pen - which I took with me everywhere, along with my small pebble - and wrote;
6/14/10 Monday
I absolutely LOVE how guys act, EXCEPT when they break your heart or reject you; at that point I want to rip their heads off. Need 2 help Marilyn. How?
P.S. Mari fell 4 Sam. he’s our bff.she just gt dumped by hott jock josh.
I closed the notebook and said goodbye to Marilyn.
As I went to bed upstairs the answer came to me. I’ll ask him tomorrow at his locker before first period class.
Tuesday June 15, 2010
The next day, I went to his locker number, to which Marilyn had told me was 192, which was NOT close to my 105 locker, and asked him “Will you go out with Marilyn?”
“Sorry but I like someone else,” he said coolly with that Russian accent, without turning around.
“Who? I won’t tell” I said, he finally turned around and blushed.
“I’m pretty sure she’ll find out” he said confidently.
“How are you so sure?” I asked.
“I just am,” he said tauntingly.
“That would be impossible, unless,” my eyes widened as I realized what I thought he was trying to tell me. I looked at him and he was shaking his head, giving me a look-with his blue eyes widening in horror as he realized what I thought he was meaning to say-saying that I was totally wrong.
“ARE YOU TWO GOING OUT?” Jennifer Newberry asked screaming.
When did she get here, her locker is at the other end of the hallway.
“NNNOOOOO!!!!!!!!” Sam and I screamed at her as I noticed I was still in the hallway by his locker. He put his arm around me as a joke, which was awkward since he was 5'1" also, so I whipped my head around and stared at him with a menacing glare.
“Don’t touch me,” I said as I walked away mad at him, to my first period class, History.
I sat by Marilyn in class, we said hi and she hurriedly but neatly copied my notes, just as always. I hadn’t noticed before that Sam was sitting on the other side of me. I was surprised to see him, but I was relieved because on the other side of him was Josh Cartman, Sam’s least favorite person and Marilyn's ex, maybe the first being because of the next.
Josh is skinny, but not weird skinny, enough skinny. He has blonde hair, vibramt green eyes, and he’s really kind of ignorant, exept for sports, of course.
I thought Sam was going to move but he didn’t. As I looked at him I remembered that he likes and dislikes the same things I do. This went on through History, Math and Science, and by lunch I loved him. I missed most of all my classes, luckily I knew Marilyn had my back and with just me asking her to would tell me everything I had missed, hopefully she won’t find out I love her love.
At lunch, Sam immediately found me sitting by Marilyn, I had not expected this. I shot him a look that said what do you think you are doing?
he shot me one back saying Relax I’m just here for Marilyn, JEEZ.
“So Marilyn, Joey told me you like me, is she lying?” he said with his gorgeous smile. Gosh how I LOVE it. I thought.wait WHAT?
“No, she isn’t” Marilyn said, blushing, and trying to hide her face. Jeez you don’t have to be so DRAMATIC!!!! I thought.omg I am HATEFUL! I ate silently for almost half of lunch time, which was very unusual for me since I loved to talk to Marilyn during lunch. It’s the only time we get to even see each other or communicate.
“Okay I can’t take it anymore, I love Sam okay!!JEEZ I just couldn’t take the guilt anymore” I blurted a little louder than I meant to. Everyone turned around and STARED at me, like actually stared with their mouths hanging wide open. It really crept me out.
I said it knowing I really meant it. he shot me a look that said Really? YUCK!
“So you two are going out!” Jennifer said with a confused look on her face.
“O….M….G...Joey HOW COULD YOU?!” Marilyn screamed and said in a more hushed whisper “You know I love him. How could you have kept this a secret?”
I had a feeling I was not going to get to copy her notes on what I had missed, and there was going to be a fight, but most of all I knew we were going to stay friends even after this.
“Okay, what I think is that you’re all just overreacting!” said the cutest person I knew.
“Oh, okay I believe you” I said in a flat, distant voice, clearly under his spell.
“Joey, shut it okay,” Marilyn commanded, “Is this true?” she asked looking at Sam.
“How should I know-”he said cut off by the obnoxious bell that let you know when lunch was over.
We went back in the classroom. I love you. I thought as I stared at him. he looked over at me and mouthed the words; I hate you, and then stuck his tongue out playfully, and smiled.
As we entered the classroom I remembered that we had assigned seats in this class –mine was right next to Sam- I prepared for his dread to fill the school, but instead he was facing away laughing with some kid, I wondered why.
“Why are you so happy?” I asked, having a really good feeling of what the answer may be.
“Oh, I forgot,” he said not smiling anymore, “I have to sit by you.” he said smirking.
“Well you don’t have to be so rude about it!” I said in hushed whisper so the teacher didn’t hear me.
“All right class, take your seats. Today in English we are going to have an open response, like I promised yesterday.” Said Mrs. Griffin.
Everyone got out a pencil and cleared their desks. All of a sudden, I see a note from Sam to me I, of course, open it under my desk like you’re supposed to do to not get caught.
It says:
U r werd y do u lk me?
I quickly write back:
I m NOT werd I lk u bc I m jk
I lie, and pass it to him. he reads it while I hurry through my open response. he writes back, and hurries through his before passing me one that says;
O u r jk ok =)
I read over my answers and make some changes to make it better. I kind of felt bad for lying.
Wednesday June 16, 2010
The next day was a Wednesday. I had to go to church after school, so I was really bored, which was usual for kids my age.
I went through all my classes thinking I was so lucky because I was smart and it was like I didn’t even have to stress to make good grades. I was surprised how fast time went by. By the time lunch came, I was in my own imaginary world.
As the school day ended, I was packing up my things to leave and shoved a permission slip Mrs. Griffin had given us into my bag, when……
“BOO!” Marilyn screamed.
“AH! Jeez, Mar you scared the life out of me!!” I said scared something was going to jump out at me.She giggled because I called her sea in Spanish.
We walked out of the classroom together to our bus. I had totally forgotten all about the permission slip AND Sam. I was so happy because Marilyn and her brother were going to my church too.
“One sec…” I said to Marilyn as I was getting out my “checkerboard” out.
6/17/10
Okay so I’m @ car heading 2 chrch okay. Um btw I’m in love w/ Sam n mar totly 4got (yes) I hope sam 4got 2 (crossed fingers)
I left my notebook in the car. I had totally forgotten all about Sam, until I walked in. As soon as I walked in, he waved us over and we –not including me-sat down happily. Marilyn’s brother elbowed me in the stomach, and giggled like a little girl.
“Oof” I managed.
I, instead of just the sermon, dreaded more it because it meant more time with Sam.
“Hi, what’s up?
